Wrapping up, we are left with the sense that Microsoft's pitch for the future of gaming, based on its hardware design at least, is very close to Sony's: the best that AMD can offer, paired with extremely fast storage which opens up a wealth of opportunity in using the surrounding architecture in groundbreaking ways.

The firm is also strongly advocating its back-compat credentials with support for all Xbox console generations - a promise we know it can deliver based on its impeccable track record. 120Hz support? Variable refresh? It's good to see these namechecked, but 8K? Well there's no reason why the reconstruction techniques of today can't scale up to higher resolutions tomorrow - but in truth, in the age of temporal super-sampling and other 'smart upscaling' technologies, I'm not sure that higher pixel counts are 100 per cent synonymous with a guarantee of better image quality any more.

Put simply, there's a better use for GPU power - especially if onboard solid-state storage can genuinely provide a vast pool of 'virtual memory' capable of delivering more detail, bigger, more contiguous worlds and more immersion. And with both Sony and Microsoft making the same bet on SSDs, it seems that this is almost certainly the way forward in delivering a next generation gaming experience.

Killing off long load times will be great, but something games haven't had a problem with dating back to probably GTA San Andreas is "bigger worlds". They're already big enough! Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Give me a world the size of Vice City, Shenmue, Yakuza etc and really pack it full of interesting stuff is the route I hope most developers go down.

Still in development but unclear if it will ship yet, $60-$80.

I have a feeling the full spec reveal will be pushed into next year. The start of February would seem like a good time.

Also Gears Dev mentioned dedicated Ray Tracing again -

Also on the subject of hardware, Penty said he is "definitely super excited" about the forthcoming release of Microsoft's next-generation console, Project Scarlett, in Holiday 2020. "We don’t have anything to announce right now in terms of Gears with the new hardware--but I’m definitely super excited about what the new hardware could do. Having dedicated raytracing hardware is huge," he said.

As much as I'm interested in Ray Tracing everything I've seen about it suggests it's a huge power hog and I'd rather they just upgrade the current graphics techniques and have a super silky framerate and upgraded AI.
If the new machines do have the power required then great but at the moment even the top end PC graphics cards are not exactly coping with ray tracing well so I'm not sure whatever tech they manage to afford for a console will be enough.
The next 6 months when they reveal all and digital foundry can do some decent examinations of the hardware should tell us all if Ray Tracing will be a thing that'll actually be used or just something the manufacturers say it can do but never gets implemented in games which is what I think will happen with 8K.

I'd be more interested in info about an actual affordable consumer version of Hololense.

The rumours are the Next Xbox has a custom dedicated bespoke Ray Tracing chip/chipset that’s apart from the main GPU, CPU and RAM Innards. .

I wonder if they'll release a diskless version of next gen at launch or will they wait for the inevitable slim overhaul and opt for a real monster size reduction?
I know I'll be getting any next gen with a disc drive simply because I use Boomerang and but it could be interesting to see if they just use the same overall body or if they have a smaller diskless unit at launch and what the price difference is.

Wouldn't Game Pass do the same job?

I have Game Pass as well and both subs compliment each other well.
There's not many games I have to buy now so my spending on games overall has tumbled recently.

It would be amazing if I could buy a game on PC and take all the advantages of having a powerful gaming system at home and then stream the same game elsewhere on MS xcloud. With cloud saves this would be pretty simple to implement.

Going from carbon neutral operations to carbon neutral products: Microsoft’s business operations have operated carbon neutral since 2012. Today we are beginning the journey of extending that to our products and devices with a pilot to make 825,000 Xbox consoles carbon neutral. These are the first gaming consoles to be carbon neutral. While just a pilot, we’re already looking at what we can do to further reduce and neutralize carbon across devices in the future.

Seems the first 825K consoles are XB1s but sounds like they've something planned for the future.

Playing for the Planet Alliance includes Creative Mobile, E-Line Media, Google Stadia, Green Man Gaming, iDreamSky, Internet of Elephants, Microsoft, Niantic Inc, Pixelberry, Reliance Games, Rovio, Space Ape, Sports Interactive, Supercell, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Strange Loop, Sybo, Twitch, Ubisoft, WildWorks and will be supported by Playmob.

Makes sense.
I see no problem with them doing yearly revisions of next gen consoles with the only difference being lower and lower power consumption. I would imagine they can get quite a power saving after 3 or 4 years of refinements so why not use it and it gives the console engineers something to do.

Not really.

The other side is I'm sure MS want to lessen power consumption to their Azure stuff, saves them money after all.

It was only a few days ago (before Friday's climate protests across the world) that we had Microsoft whistleblowers highlighting Microsoft's new partnerships with various companies in the oil industry

Their datacenters aren't close to running on 100% renewable either.

They also don't quote the footprint of their entire production line and only single out these <100k devices as being carbon neutral. No doubt the others have an increased footprint which negates any saving on those <100k clean devices.

Say one thing, do another.

I'm not sure Microsoft having Oil companies as customers of their IT and Azure services constitutes as doing one thing saying another but fairy nuff.

There's a big difference between being a customer who happens to be using a computer with Windows on and signing partnerships with oil companies leveraging Microsoft technologies and skillsets to accelerate the speed at which fossil fuels can be removed from the ground.

That's fine for a business that's entirely profit driven, but don't put out press releases about how green you are in the same week.

And the other points about the production lines, the products and data centres. Focus on those rather than wanting a pat on the back for less than 100,000 xbox's being "carbon neutral".
