Rumours -

According to our tipster, earlier PS5 prototypes have been in the hands of developers since 2018, but Prospero, the current dev console, was first delivered to developers early this summer.

In terms of graphics performance, our tipster offered fuzzy details about how each console would handle ray tracing differently, but frankly, the statements were too hard to parse, so we won’t reprint them here.

According to our tipster, Microsoft will make the camera a huge priority, while the Prospero kit uses older camera technology. (It’s worth noting that what’s in a development kit doesn’t necessarily reflect what ships in a final product.)

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s camera is allegedly capable of 4K resolution with just a two-frame latency between what is recorded and what appears on a stream. (The current Microsoft Kinect camera gets about 8ms to 10ms of latency.) The tipster claims Microsoft is showing off the capabilities of the camera using a Snapchat-like demo that changes with the in-game lighting.

the future consoles will have the “greatest compute jump in any console,”

Hopefully optional cameras for both consoles.

Oh great just what we all need, Kinect 2.0  .

I really hope I can opt out of that shower of shite again as I don't give a gooseberry fool about a camera and don't plan on filming myself anytime soon as what weirdo wants to watch me? Nobody, that's who and that's as it should be :x .

There is no way Microsoft will be bringing Kinect back in any form. It is dead. Any kind of camera integration will be for sharing photos, video chat, that kind of thing.

Maybe they want a rerun of the infamous bottom of the shoe press conference?
It's sure to be better this time :shifty: .

I believe the Kinect with Xbox One at launch was actually called Kinect 2.0

No chance Kinect is coming at all, only weird peripheral would be an AR headset.

I think an AR headset will be released eventually but I'm unsure if it'll be before we're again at the end of a console generation.
At the moment AR is still a lot more expensive than I feel most consumers are willing to pay for a peripheral as even PSVR is at the limit of what I think people will pay.

The camera could be one that was rumoured earlier this year -

These products are currently codenamed Bari but are also sometimes referred to as Aruba camera as well.

Aruba, for those not familiar, is the name of the shell used by the Surface Hub 2. And it’s not hard to put these two products together; this is the webcam the company has shown off previously when announcing the Surface Hub 2 last year (above image).

As for the specs, it looks like they will support depth sensing and Windows Hello functionality. With depth sensing, this should make it possible to remove (or blur) the background from behind the user and we have seen Microsoft implement this type of feature on the software side with Teams.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them push the limits with a 4k sensor too. Paul is hearing that it may work with the Xbox One; possibly as a way to login or what may be more enticing, making it easier to stream to the company’s Mixer service.

It has been several years since Microsoft released a webcam with the last update, the Lifecam Studio, arriving around 2010. What I will be curious to see is how they brand the devices. Will they stick with the LifeCam branding or will they venture under the Surface umbrella and try to extract value from the consumer and corporate-friendly branding.

Sony's killer move with the PS4 was to add the Share button and the ability for anybody to easily stream. The PS Camera was optional and very much in demand.

XBO's Kinect 2.0 bumped the price up of the console but a compelling argument for why gamers would want it wasn't made (voice control and scanning Xbox codes was not compelling, "Xbox Off").

Streaming is a big deal. Microsoft wants more people to stream and to use Mixer to do it. If they can offer an optional camera, then why ever not?

Sony added a share button and Microsoft bought an entire streaming platform integrated into the UI with every gold user 2 (or3?) button presses away from streaming on Mixer. Good move that it uses gamer tags as their channel so no fiddling about, (& with a few more button presses You can opt for Twitch)

Sony’s ‘Killer move’ was not having Don Mattrick at the head of their console division, oh and having better exclusives to boot.

Off the shelf Webcams already work with Existing Xbox One’s I don’t see the big deal with this tbh.

It's not a format fight! The point I was trying to make was that before this generation streaming was mainly the domain of the hardcore, but the PS4 Share button made it accessible to the masses.

A strong case can be made that if Sony hadn't demonstrated to Microsoft the value of streaming then there would never have a been a Mixer. Sometimes fella, you just have to tip your hat.

Microsoft isn’t going to repeat its mistakes from the Xbox One with its next-generation Xbox console. “I would say a learning from the Xbox One generation is we will not be out of position on power or price,” says Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Xbox and gaming chief, in an interview with The Verge. “If you remember the beginning of this generation we were a hundred dollars more expensive and yes, we were less powerful. And we started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success.”

That market success will be key for Xbox, after years of falling behind PlayStation sales and questions over its games lineup. Either way, Spencer thinks there are plenty of generations of Xbox ahead. “We had the discussion years ago ‘do we want to go do another generation?’ Yes, and do we think there will be multiple generations ahead of us? I actually think there probably is,” says Spencer. “So we’re going all in. We’re all-in on Project Scarlett and I want to compete, and I want to compete in the right ways which is why we’re focused on cross-play and backward compatibility.”

Now I've never really streamed anything on (well maybe a few mins worth to test it out) but what I have done is use the share button plenty of times to save gameplay footage and without a shadow of a doubt it takes a massive gooseberry fool on Xbox's Game DVR capture. Same applies with Share Factory.

Plenty of times on Xbox trying to capture a screenshot only for it to pause the game in doing so and instead snapping a shot of a strawberry floating menu :slol:

I think Twitch taking off in a massive way (definitely on PC, but I have no idea how its popularity compared on PS4), and then being bought by Amazon, and MS needing its fingers in all the pies, was the primary reason for MS purchasing their streaming platform.
