I was actually thinking this, and I've waited this long so I can hold off a bit longer to see of MM and OOT get moved across.

I'm not sure they will really, that was a lot more than a port, it was a full on remake. The touch controls were fairly integral and the art style definitely seemed optimised for the 3ds hardware. I mean, the textures weren't amazing but it definitely had the resolution of that system in mind, not unlike the n64 original had to. I really enjoyed it on the system anyway and it looked great at solid 60fps in 3D. In case anyone forgot how that worked, that's 120fps on a tiny handheld system with just 2 ARM cores and a pretty rudimentary even at the the time graphics chip (similar to a budget smartphone). If you don't like 3D or have a 2DS then it enables anti aliasing which at times you'd think you're looking at something like a game cube game but with much better colour depth and effects like specularity and bloom/HDR.

To make it worthwhile they'd probably need to re do all the assets for a third time in something like 4-6x the resolution, extrapolating and creating even more detail from the original games, unless they were made that way (might have the foresight these days but it was outsourced to Grezzo and I presume they had a limited budget). The n64 to 3DS jump simply made sense for this, although I suppose it might have been possible on the DS (they probably tried it) seeing as Mario 64 DS was a fairly good port (that was one do the first n64 games though and the original hardware sometimes struggled with Ocarina, plus MM needed the expansion pack).

It's worth picking up if like me you've never played the game for sure. Took me a while to get through some of the more opaque sections, I was far from truly completing it (didn't get the fierce diety mask) and I did use a guide when I was stuck.

The 3DS is a whole different character of system to the Switch and I'll always have a soft spot for it. I feel Nintendo were probably thinking the same, as just like the GBA and the DS, they were talking along those "third pillar" line. In reality Switch is obviously the successor seeing as they have ended manufacture and development.

After getting star fox, I think I'll finally get majoras mask (never played it) and maybe pilotwings resort (Not played it either). Both are pretty expensive, so I think I may just go digital on those.

I picked up Pilotwings on Cex a few months back for £4. Great little title, although being a launch release it has insanely powerful 3D effect :datass:

Wasn't pilotwings resort basically a flying bit of wii sports resort with an old brand slapped on it.

Interesting to note however that pilotwings itself is a rebanded arcade title.

Pilotwings Resort is only £4 at CEX if you don't mind a copy with unidentifiable stains on it.

EDIT: sorry speedboatchase, I missed your post stating this exact fact!

Whoops, I fact checked myself and got confused somewhere.

The arcade game I'm referring to made by Nintendo is Sky Skipper which is a quite different game however it does feature the red biplane and a script style font for the name of the game.

The alpha games uncovered in the Nintendo gigaleak included Dragonfly, which is understood to be a prototype pilotwings and test for Mode 7 (the SNES graphics mode for Mario kart, f zero, and pilotwings etc). I think this includes the tileset for the logo as well which is similar to both Sky Skipper and Pilotwings.

So one could trace a general lineage from Sky Skipper > Dragonfly > Pilotwings > Pilotwings 64 > Pilotwings Resort, arguably all variations on the "flying a byplane" thing. In earlier days Nintendo tended to start with different characters and objects drawn by artists (as they didn't really have any programmers), the rough game concept/idea and then go from there. Depending on whatever they thought would be fun to play.

For example Mario (or luigi) is the common thread between almost all Mario games even if originally he was a Donkey Kong character.

In this case someone at Nintendo fixated on a red biplane, which is quite a specific thing so it's easy to draw comparisons.

Interestingly however their approach has changed;- splatoon for example started out as cubes of tofu firing tofu at each other and they introduced the squid mechanic and inklings later :toot:

So they focused on the mechanics first without any real art and worked out of that.

I guess Nintendo realise art is time consuming and expensive whereas testing whether a game concept is fun shouldn't be.

Grabbed Bravely Default Second Layer from a pawn store today for £8. Been playing the odd bit of Fire Emblem Birthright recently kind of purposely been trying to slowly go through it.

Finally got round to putting time into WarioWare Gold last night, it’s a lot of crazy fun isn’t it  some of the micro games genuinely make me laugh out loud with how ridiculous they can be.

I actually found my copy of WarioWare D.I.Y as well so I’ll have to give that a go at some point.

Bravely Default Second was a great pick-up for that price, kerr. Good to hear that you're playing Fire Emblem, too - it's a series that I've yet to try.

I've never played a Warioware game and they do look pretty crazy, IM! It seems like they're good for fast-action, silly fun.

It's lovely to see the 3DS chat up and running again!

Yea a lot of games are on the rise! I want to pick up Monster Hunter Stories but unwilling to pay the current going rate for it. I got a few other games on my hit list too, Ever Oasis, Yo-Kai Watch, Samus Returns and Link Between Worlds.

I started this a week ago. Brilliant fun. Hope the next game caters to single player audiences as well.
