I was surprised how cheap the DS games still are on eBay as well so can always go back if it's something that clicks.

Just to chip in here, I thought the Layton vs Phoenix Wright was the best of the lot - but that might have been helped by the fact I've played through all of the others so enjoyed the addition of the Phoenix Wright elements to mix it up a bit. The price doesn't seem to drop on it, though.

Alternative point of view... I hated Layton vs Wright. As in, I can see it has some value as a game, but I hated it. I think it’s probably okay if you approach it as a Layton game with some Ace Attorney bits in there, but I much prefer Phoenix’s adventures; so the many weak characters, the clumsy excuses to shoe-horn in puzzles, and the final utterly bull**** plot twist really didn’t sit comfortably with Phoenix’s inclusion.

I finally played the N64 version of Sin and Punishment for the first time yesterday. That is a seriously great game. I couldn’t help thinking the whole time that it would be amazing on 3DS with stereoscopic 3D. Someone needs to make this happen!

This was my approach, so I can understand if you're looking for a Phoenix Wright game then this isn't one.

All of the Layton games have ridiculous impossible/fantastical payoffs/twists! I get that Phoenix Wright doesn't sit with that, I just thought the court scenes broke up the gameplay quite well.

The one part about Layton games I don't enjoy is when a puzzle is a 'trick' and uses some kind of assumption or abstract concept rather than solving a puzzle that's in front of you - particularly when it's set up to be something you can work out and give a sensible answer to. :? :x

The latest Layton, (with Katrielle rather than Hershel) is a poor relation to the original games.

I have it on Wii U which is 60Hz 640x480. Awesome game. It's great that you can play through it on Normal (I don't think there is an easy..) with infinite continues (I think, or you just get a load of them, or I think I just used a lot of save states), finish that in a day, then get better at it and play on Hard. Which is almost impossible just a few levels in. It's a challenging game that remains entertaining to play even if you can probably finish it in under 4 hours.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Just reached the final boss on Luigi’s Mansion and it really shows how shite the controls are for this on 3DS. It just feels so awkward and clunky trying to aim with the C Stick and then if you make the slightest jolt then the motion controls kick in and it all goes to pot!

Can you turn motion off?

EDIT: seen how you do it now and it makes an improvement, just wish the nub on 3DS was more like the circle pad. Beat the game now though!

Yeah the nub really feels like it was a half arsed measure. Everyone was asking for a circle pad, and the circle pad pro was so amazing (Resident Evil Revelations was elevated to an even higher level with that), but then all we got was the nub.

Why they never went with 2 circle pads on the New models is beyond me. It would have been perfect, the nub is just not a good replacement for a second stick.

Play the sequel as well. It's even better, and more bonkers.

Finished Luigi’s Mansion the other night. Fun little game, felt the sequel improved in pretty much all departments except the open nature of the first.

Nub controls were awful as mentioned but what a franchise regardless of it’s flaws

Glad a third one is coming to Switch, it’s a great franchise indeed

It would be cool to see the arcade game get a Switch port as well

Just seen the two DS Zeldas are on the my Nintendo discount deal at the moment. Tempted to pick one up. Which is better? I played both at the time and didn’t really click with either, but fancy another try for a fiver.

People generally prefer Spirit Tracks. I enjoyed Phantom Hourglass more because I played it first and it was a fresh experience. To me, it seemed Spirit Tracks was probably more polished but it didn't exactly wow me. Also didn't enjoy travelling around the map as much on Spirit Tracks because you're locked to rails, and it becomes a chore later on with how the warp points are distributed. The novelty of it being train travel wears off.

Phantom Hourglass is also heavily criticised for its Temple of the Ocean King, which you have to return to at several points in the game, progressing further each time but having to repeat floors you'd already done before. I think the routes you'd take could differ though when you got new abilities. Can't remember it too well but it didn't feel like a big deal to me. Spirit Tracks has an equivalent temple but if i recall correctly you didn't have to repeat areas, or it was checkpointed better or something.

More of a focus on characters and story in Spirit Tracks too, but they didn't really leave a strong impression on me.

I guess I'll suggest Phantom Hourglass then.

Phantom Hourglass is loads better than Spirit Tracks, which starts enjoyable enough but is one of the few Zelda games I ran out of steam on (lol) before completing. The Spirit Tracks overworld is literally on rails and you spend too much time there, compared to Phantom Hourglass where you have a whole ocean to sail across as you wish. Kriken is exactly right with saying the Spirit Tracks train novelty wears off before the end of the game.

The criticism of the Temple of the Ocean King is overblown

Also it probably won't affect your decision but the multiplayer in Phantom Hourglass is great

To provide a counter-argument, I preferred Spirit Tracks, but thought neither was too great. While PH’s overworld is more open, plotting a course is very stop-start; and the criticisms of the Temple are not overblown, it’s one of the dullest and most repetitive things in all Zelda. However I did think the bosses in ST were worse.

Didn’t reeeeeeeally like either of them to be honest. I think they had some value at the time because they were doing new exciting things with the touchscreen, and they genuinely were new and exciting. In the modern day, they’re floating around 6/10 for me if that.
