Yeah but I think I'm slightly more of a Monster Hunter fan than you :P

I've picked up a bunch of titles recently. Codename STEAM, TriForce Heroes, Xenoblade Chronicles X 3D, Samus Returns and Fossil Fighters: Frontiers. All got plenty of life in them.

I'd say the Wii U was an expansion of the dual screen DS concept but for consoles with random Wii controls compatibility (AND the pro controller which was a bit nuts having all 3 options, it even supported the Wii attachments like Classic Controller and the GameCube controller adapter). Nintedo were already doing it with the GBA-GC linkup functionality, although only for about 3 games.

Even the 3DS was originally a GameCube concept, and the hardware is comparable.

I guess with the Switch, you could say Nintendo finally left the Gamecube, including what was never or barely released for it, behind - but it still has Wii functionality so. dunno lol

Monster Hunter Stories is a belter of a game too, and I'd say Detective Pikachu was as fun for me as Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee.

I really struggled to get into Detective Pikachu, maybe it's just not my style of game but I stopped playing a while ago.

Still haven't managed to get round to playing Ever Oasis and MHS, which do you think I should do first?

Detective Pikachu is really simple and obviously a kids game but I just found it really nice to see pokemon and the pokemon world in a more every-day-life setting. Also a talking detective pikachu never got old.

I'd recommend Ever Oasis first. It will definitely appeal to anyone who likes town building mechanics in games, like Dark Cloud, and it also has a Zelda vibe about the dungeon and combat side of things.

Monster Hunter Stories is more the pokemon monster catching appeal, but will definitely be enjoyed more by fans of the series for the way it expands the universe while remaining faithful to it, and how it recontextualises a lot of monster hunter staple elements.

If you’ve not played much MonHun before then definitely Ever Oasis. I reckon that MHS works a lot better if you understand and apprecite what they’ve done with classic MonHun elements. I didn’t, and so found the monster designs mediocre and the characters downright awful. O_R, big MonHun fan that he is, really liked it. So if you’re a big MonHun fan likewise then then... shrug.

Ever Oasis is in my Top Ten 3DS games. It’s really cute and creates a surprisingly good Zelda-style adventure that gets quite sad in places! It’s a bit fiddly, but building up your town and shops is bloody addictive.

I loved Dark Cloud and am not the biggest Monster Hunter fan (I don't have any friends that play) so looks like I'll give Ever Oasis a go. Thanks guys.

I want to argue this, but I think a lot of the monster design in monster hunter is in their unique behaviour, their movesets, and how they match to the environments. In Stories you're assumed to already be familiar with the monsters, and their behaviour and movesets are reduced and remapped to turn-based battles, so you probably lack the context to appreciate the monster designs fully if you don't already know them and see how their attacks map across.

Monster design in Monster Hunter is very functional because of how it directly affects gameplay, with hitboxes and breakable parts and different damage potential for different parts. Those designs are then carried over into Stories which doesn't have any of that.

For example with Diablos, in Stories you just see a dragon with horns, but in the main series those horns get stuck in walls when it charges and can be broken, so the design is more than just appearance.

Yes, I think it’s going to be tough to argue on the basis of MHS standalone. There were a fair few that were still interesting anyway: Zamtrios was an excellent shark-boy, Qurupeco obviously took inspiration from frigate birds as well as singing and... exploding?, and Arzuros was a Good Bear. But too many others, without their functionality being developed, looked like ‘Generic Dinosaur No. 325.’ They focussed heavily on reptiles, and not enough on mammals/birds/fish etc., for my liking.

Plus: palette-swaps. Pretending a palette swap is a completely different monster is Not Okay. Pokémon did it on occasion and was bad when it did it (Plusle/Minun, the Primal legendaries); but MHS and (the worst offender) Yo-Kai Watch are much worse.

The 3DS is eight years old today in UK / Europe! I got mine (Cosmo Black  ) in June 2011.

I've had a bit of a 3DS renaissance these past few months, completing Layton Miracle Mask and returning to Animal Crossing in a big way. Sure, the graphic resolution may be low but, for compact and fun play, the 3DS remains a strong system.

I got mine in 2015. My 3DS library is pretty small and skewed towards the later titles but it does have some excellent games on it

I got mine as a present from my wife shortly after launch as a make me feel better gift as mum had just died. I think I had ridge racer and Tetris with it at first.

I upgraded to the 3ds xl a while back, but it's a console I always forget exists and that I've got one. I love the thing, got some amazing games for it, so i really should dig it out again soon and play some more.

Great little handheld with a fantastic range of first party titles, it's amazing how quick 8 years has gone.

It’s that time of year again where I recount shitting my trousers in my kitchen in front of my brother on 3DS release date. I ate a donner kebab pot noodle and ten minutes later went for a very casual and safe feeling fart, when suddenly my arse gave way!

Never forget!

I’m sure I posted about it in the past. A great day that went rapidly downhill!

Thanks for sharing. I got a cheap new 3ds XL from cash converters for 75 snoops and still have a bunch of games to rinse and loads of digital downloads inc, had a standard XL for years but sold it to pay for upgrade. I just need to reshell it as condition was poor.

Majoras mask
Samus returns
Xenoblade chronicles
Code name steam
Triforce heroes
Fire emblem
Pokemon Y
Fossil fighters frontiers
Rune factory 4

Actually I think the only game I've completed is resident evil revelations and A Link Between Worlds! Such a great library. I want both luigis mansion games as well.

Bought mine pretty soon after launch and had some buyers remorse but that changed when the games started to come.
Home to some great games, too many to think about, but it had been gathering dust recently.
Have had it out recently though, playing through A Link to the Past, it's a great console for retro games, 2D Metroid, Zelda and Mario galore

Top Ten 3DS Games:

1) The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
2) Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice
3) Kid Icarus Uprising
4) Bravely Second
5) Luigi's Mansion 2
6) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
7) Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy
8) Ever Oasis
9) Pokémon Sun/Moon
10) Picross 3D Round 2

...and while some of those are fine games, it highlights to me how amazing the gap has been between Nintendo's previous handheld and their current one. The Switch is a thing of absolute joy.
