Rumours abound that - pending any further anouncements of new games from Nintendo - Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth could be the final game released in a physical format for 3DS in UK / Europe. It's due to launch on 4 June. The physical copy of the upcoming Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk has been cancelled for Europe.

Looks like my purchase of Etrian Odyssey: Nexus will stand as my last (new) game for the system. It always feels sad when a format comes to the end. At least we have a cracking, varied library to look back on  .

It's had a good 8 years of first party support and, as a result, has a fantastic lineup and legacy. Nintendo now need to focus entirely on the Switch, after a pretty disappointing 2018 it looks like they're really getting into gear, so many fantastic looking titles have been unveiled so far.

It'd be great if Nintendo could find some way of allowing Switch to play 3DS games, possibly some kind of adaptor with a screen and cartridge slot that connects to the Switch.

Good article on the death of the 3DS and Switch taking its place as the new Nintendo handheld

https://www.geek.com/games/the-3ds-is-d ... h-1785533/

But I couldn’t because in 2017 I was already fully onboard with the Nintendo Switch, not only Nintendo’s next-generation console but also a next-generation handheld thanks to its hybrid design. Not only was the Switch technologically superior to the 3DS but it also promised a grand unified library of Nintendo software no longer split across two devices. The last roadblock to this glorious future was the 3DS, and the longer the aging handheld kept getting new cool games like Metroid: Samus Returns or WarioWare Gold the longer the Switch would be arbitrarily hamstrung.

It was frustrating, especially since the only reasons to keep the 3DS on life support were financial, not beneficial to players. And for two whole years Nintendo kept up the charade that the 3DS could co-exist with its clear successor. But at last, it seems the jig is up. The 3DS was a fantastic device. It helped keep Nintendo going during the Wii U dark days. But it’s dead. Long live the portable Nintendo Switch.

We’ve felt the tide change these past few months as 3DS sales dried up and Nintendo simply stopped announcing games for the system. Nintendo Directs became entirely focused on Switch. The last big 3DS game, the Kirby’s Epic Yarn remake, conveniently came at the end of the fiscal year. And now based on comments at a recent investors briefing, the 3DS firmly seems like a thing of the past, much to my relief.

The good news is that for a company as conservative as Nintendo to make this risky transition they must believe the Switch is fully ready to step up. And they’re right. The Switch is massively popular. It’s built up a great game library even while having to share software with its weaker sibling. And with big new consoles versions of Mario and Zelda out of the way, the rest of the Switch’s 2019 seems poised to fill that 3DS-shaped handheld hole in your life.

Super Mario Maker 2 can use a stylus for easy portable level editing. Franchises like Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and Luigi’s Mansion were huge 3DS and now they’re coming to Switch. Rumors persist that Nintendo is planning a smaller, handheld-only version of Switch for release soon. Combine that with the next-gen Pokemon games, Pokemon Sword and Shield, being Switch-only and that should put the final nail in the 3DS coffin.

Absolute BS. Nintendo has been supporting the system by continuing to release games for it; sure, it could be viewed that they were releasing games to make money, but this is the case with any system or publisher.

3DS owners have enjoyed years of great games and great support. If some Switch owners are up tight over that, I trust they'll demand that Nintendo drops the Switch as soon as a future system arrives.

While my position is slightly more nuanced than ‘DROP THE 3DS NOW’... yes absolutely I’ll be like that.

One of the great gaming sadnesses of recent times is that barely anyone played new Nintendo IP Ever Oasis, because it was released on the 3DS post-Switch. It was also a game that really could have benefited from the extra power of the Switch.

Yep, it's obviously beneficial to any player who has a 3DS and not a Switch (which is a lot of players), and is still fine for anyone with both as they can still choose to play 3DS games if they want to, like I have done several times.

Why do you enjoy posting articles that aggravate "left-behind" system users, Nick? What specifically do you think is "good" about the article posted from some humdrum generic domain like geek.com? From the first paragraph, and I'll annotate why this is a bait article to help you out:

It dropped the dumb 3D gimmick* but kept the upgraded processor. It had a sturdy clamshell body* and from a certain angle even looked like a premium mobile phone*. And of course it could leverage the massive library of great 3DS (and DS) games. I wanted to love it.*

But I couldn’t because in 2017 I was already fully onboard with the Nintendo Switch*

*The 3D effect of the 3DS is its namesake and was undoubtedly an innovative, flagship feature of the console and it was leveraged in pretty much all the games for the system, sometimes in surprising ways. This is an opinion, not a fact.

*There was nothing wrong with the precious consoles in terms of durability

*Obvious gizmo/iPhone/Samsung Galaxy whore. What's the point in this comparison? There isn't one. It's setting up the previous iterations, and the current iteration, as "almost desirable". The author obviously doesn't really like the product at all.

* I.e. the previous sentences are empty and meaningless drivel

* ... OK? So the author came in to the console some 5 years after it launched and is complaining that he instead wants to focus on his new, technically superior console?

The entire article is about one person's sunk cost fallacy / buyer's remorse. It's not a good article, it's a strawberry floating terrible piece of journalism.

Given that, please stop posting shitty articles in this "Nintendo 3DS survivors/fan topic" that have nothing to do with the strengths, merits or enjoyment of the console and more about pissing off other users.

Post them in the Switch topic instead, so that switch users can rejoice they will get new games because the 3DS is dead or whatever.

tl;dr stop being a giant penis.

There is already one warning on your account. A second warning results in a ban.

Just sayin'

And for what exactly? Posting an article you just so happen to disagree with? Responding humorously to someone calling me a PENIS?

It is not a matter of whether or not I disagree with the article; I took the time to explain what I thought about it.

From that it naturally arises that I question your motives for posting a poor quality article that yet again denigrates something you must know most the members posting regularly in this topic enjoy and aren't really interested in why somebody thinks it is gooseberry fool or is "dead". This isn't the first time you have done that; in fact it amounts to most of your contributions to this topic lately. Such as this equally shite post:

NickSCFC wrote:Looks like 3DS' lifecycle is about to come to an end

This comment from ResetEra sums it up for me...

"3DS was outdated in 2011. God so many great games wasted on this piece of gooseberry fool of a machine."

twitter.com/ZhugeEX/status/1090874437870735360

So you echo the sentiments the 3DS is a "piece of gooseberry fool". Can you expand on that a little, or are you just trolling? Looks a lot like the latter to me, as you haven't said anything of your own substance since then.

There is nothing positive that can come from a contribution like that. You are shitposting, stop pretending you aren't.

I wouldn't be so bothered if you actually posted some opinions of your own or responded to criticism, but you don't. You just  and then piss off. This is trolling.

Trolling. Re: t:rules--regulations?f=7

"Winding up" other users ("trolling" or "flame-baiting") is also verboten.

The it was a joke defence — "Ah, but I was only pretending to be an idiot!" — is viewed as dimly as you might expect.

Small breaches of etiquette may be met with a friendly verbal reminder from a moderator, either in the thread or by PM.

This has been done.

Minor infractions should be met with an official warning, which will add a note to your account telling us you've been making trouble.

This will happen if you do it again.

For serious (or persistent!) breaking of the rules, or petulance in the face of lesser action, you may be banned from the thread you have fouled in, or the entire board if appropriate.

This will happen if you do it again because you have previously been warned for the same thing on Sun November 25, 2018. You posted a topic designed to deliberately target and mock another member for recanting their posts.

Please refrain from dickery, thanks.

I don't see how the article I've posted has met that criteria, it certainly wasn't intended to upset anyone who hasn't upgraded to Switch yet, merely to discuss how Nintendo are treating the Switch as much as a successor to the 3DS as it is to the Wii U.

Calling another forum member a penis is uncalled for, but considering you own the place I'm guessing you can act with impunity.

"Oh I certainly wasn't trolling, this doesn't fit my criteria of trolling. By drive-by-posting a quote from an article that is largely negative and opens by shitting on the subject of conversation [the 3DS], this is not 100% likely to cause controversy".

Sure thing holmes.

I don't own GRcade (there really isn't a great deal to "own" anyway as anyone can strawberry float off whenever they like and there would be nothing left) I feel that collectively it is owned by those that contribute and I can and will relinquish "ownership" if it is necessary. That status I have volunteered for as a matter of necessity to exist in the UK taxable companies, organisations, clubs etc system, and to protect our intellectual property rights, and to be accountable to UK law, from which I benefit in no way whatseover and dedicate vast volumes of my time keeping it here. In return, I occasionally call out people for terrible posting, maybe with a bit of light ribbing. My opinion hasn't changed, and your history of posting to wind up other users in gaming topics, normally by dropping poor quality links or quotes designed to inflame other users, hasn't changed. You created that pattern, not me, or any of the other mods that have historically pulled you up on it.

Those are your actions and your choices to act in that way. I'm saying it's not cool. If you would like to revisit the subject of how awful your posting can be, feel free to PM me, but my opinion is unlikely to change and I have 100 other PMs that are more about improving the site rather than arguing about whether your post is inflammatory or not.

I am not unaccountable and I can be guilty of being an arse sometimes. I have consequently shifted my responsibilities around and taken breaks or delegated issues and problems to other people I feel are better at dealing with it over the years. I don't think that is happening at the moment, even if I did call you a penis. Awful.

You can take it as a bit of feedback or you can get upset about it, but I'm not sympathetic about flipping the coin for once. I probably "do a mod" about once a month; this is very relaxed MO.

Anyway, I'd welcome further criticism from you on the 3DS as a system or Nintendo's strategy with regards to 3DS/Switch software releases, but it would be nice to see you put in a little effort rather than copy and pasting an article/quote that has literally twice in a row said the product sucks with really, really weak arguments attached to why, if any.

I think just the interface and the general design of the console itself is of an era we won't see again, which I think is a shame. The Switch UI/interface lacks character. Even the other day I was browsing the 3DS eShop and there was new music playing, I think it was something from Persona (even if that's a Smash Ultimate thing).

I really like that, it helps establish "fun game time, this gooseberry fool doesn't matter so let's dance" from "super slick modern slidey scrolly clean cut SERIOUS ENTERTAINMENT" time. As a designer I know how all that stuff blends together due to trends and some positive steps in UX design... but I do miss how Nintendo didn't really seem to give a gooseberry fool and had a lavish aesthetic absolutely plastered with their rich history of characters and music, visual styles etc. They somehow made it work, whereas Sony or Nintendo did that it would just look... ridiculous. And maybe it is, but I find that to be a Good Thing. In other words its quintisentially Japanese, whereas most games console design stuff seems to try to appeal to nobody these days, least of all the character and soul of the parent company. Sony does it a little bit... Microsoft, not really at all. Not since XB1 / 360 blade dash.

I can't think of another console where just dicking around in the startup screens is fun.

Yeah, I miss that stuff. But it's mainly the dual-screen gaming that I'm going to miss. I find unique consoles far more interesting than ones that are just "add more power!".

I'd say the hybrid aspect is pretty unique! And the Wii U never really got its dual-screen business going. I do miss the stereoscopic 3D though, that was great.

In the end it's all about the games though, and the Switch has already destroyed both its forebears on that front (in my opinion). Helped by playing the Wii U's best game on the bus, natch.

You see, I'm of the opposite opinion regarding the Switch. I find the 'hybrid' thing lacking any creativity at all; there have been handheld emulation consoles that can also plug into a TV for years. The Wii U, when it did utilise the gamepad well, was brilliant for me; even if was sometimes just to add a big map. I agree with the 3D; I still love that.

Games on the Switch I've also found very lacking. Port after port of mostly Wii U games, that Nintendo want full-price for again. I've barely bought a thing on it. My favourite-ever games are mostly on the Wii, Wii U, or 3DS.
