Befuddled housewives anxious to download Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People need no longer worry. Nintendo has announced the Nintendo WiFi Network Adapter, due to arrive in Japan September 18.

Kotaku is reporting that the WiFi Network Adapter can serve as a router, or become a "bridge" for an existing router. It can also be set to "Auto," which will automatically switch over the household's network. Wii owners, consider your online experience streamlined.

The adapter will be available for ¥5,800 (USD $53) on Nintendo's homepage, and can be used with both the Wii and the Nintendo DS. No word on whether it's due to come out to America, but we'll count it as "likely." For Wii owners who haven't yet figured out how to access the splendors of Everybody Votes, will this be enough to push you online?

Why would the Wii need it's own router?

They should really push this, WiiWare and VC sales could increase a fair bit if more Wii owners went online. I'll still never understand the ones with the ability to take their consoles online and yet don't bother!

Decent enough idea, simple router that works in the household rather than just with the Wii.

It's a router for people who don't have routers.

Ooo... I might be tempted to get this and use it as a bridge.

Or.. is.. it?..

I think it is another currency printer, disguised as an everyday object.

Bit cheeky of Nintendo, really, making a device that overcomes one of the shortcomings of a rival console, and is perfectly compatible. It's like they're saying "Look, we can help you sell consoles. You look like you need it. See you in the next gen!".

So by getting this, one can take their 360 online, without an expensive adapter from Microsoft? Will this involve leaving a PC on at the same time though?

2 questions, with opposite answers. Yes, you can, and no, it won't.

Announcing this when what they really should be announcing is a HDD :fp: :fp: :fp: :fp: :fp: :fp:

How long are they going to keep lying to us about a storage solution space being in the works.

Until they decide to get off their arses, leave their golden palaces by the sea and buy out a small-time HDD manufacturer.

More people need affordable routers than need an HDD. Then the people who have bought routers will eventually need the HDD, and then it will be announced.

Welcome to business.

EDIT: I don't think I've made myself quite clear there. They are selling a cheap router, which will encourage lots more people to take their Wiis online. The more people online, the more people downloading, especially if they pimp the hell out of WiiWare. This creates an even bigger demand for an external HDD, which they can then sell at a higher price to more people than they would have previously.

I thought one of the main rules of business was to give the customer what they want.

Nobody was asking for Nintendo to make a router. Of the 11 million Wii owners out there none of them were disgruntled by the lack of an officially branded router.
