1) Guys by the way I really hope SS is more than just HD and new controls. That would make it in the 3D-Allstars camp of bare bones porting.

Whereas 3D-World has been tweaked and improved in loads of ways, obvious and less so:

But without a Bowser's Fury to catalyse extra efforts I'm not so optimistic :(

EDIT: ALSO, please when everyone tries SS again can they just flick their wrist and not move their whole forearm? That's what makes it sick and seamless and fun! And I'm sure that's what went wrong with all the people who didn't gel with the (best ever?!) control scheme...

(Maybe)

2) WRT Nintendo being cynical and lazy, I guess I can get where people are coming from and perhaps if you look at the raw numbers of AAA game releases it looks bad compared to old days. Also: Big prices for old things etc.

But on the Switch we've had a new best-in-class Zelda, 3D Mario, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and so on.

We've had genuine, worthy remakes like Link's Awakening.

We've had appreciated full-fat remasters and ports of beloved games like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2 and Pikmin 3 and so on.

We've had Majora's Mask-like experiments like Bowser's Fury.

We've had loosies like Tetris 99 and Mario 35 and Jump-Rope Challenge.

We've had interesting collaborations like a Musou BotW Prequel (?!), a freedom with its own IP that was unknown a couple of Nintendo generations ago.

Then you've gota bona-fide innovation and new ideas like Mario Kart: Living Room Edition (or whatever it's called) and Ring Fit (which is such an effective piece of lifestyle kit I'd struggle to just call it a 'game').

And lots of the above has been well-supported post-release (and for free!) like Co-Op for Captain Toad, rhythm action for Ring Fit and Balloon World for Odyssey and so on.

And we know as confirmed in development things like BotW2 and Metroid Prime 4 which will probably end up being all-timers worthy of think-pieces about how Nintendo has turned things around and won the fanbase back or whatever.

Maybe I'm not paying enough close attention because I'm busy enjoying all the great indies and stuff on my Switch (which is probably - all things considered - the best console I've ever owned?), but isn't this still the Nintendo we know and love? Maybe the best it's ever been? And why do we expect more as if we're paying them a subscription to receive new Nintendo magic at regular intervals?

Again, maybe I'm just easily pleased. But I'm still content, you know? Genuinely happy to have a different perspective on things if I'm missing a big trick or two.

It's 60fps, so there's that at least.

You say that about Hyrule Field, but you prefer SS (empty sky) and WW (largely empty sea)?

As for the music, yes maybe, but that’s like saying ‘the worst gameplay out of any 3D Mario’. They’re all pretty good! I still love the intro theme and Hyrule Field.

I never said I did prefer either of those over worlds, I think all three games have issues with that aspect. I do prefer TP to WW overall though, because the latter was quite clearly rushed.

And yeah, I've played through TP 4 times in total, I don't really enjoy most of the music in it. Wind Waker in particular is much better in that regard.

It was a fine Direct that announced some great new titles, the problem was folks as always expect too much.
Glad to see Skyward Sword is getting a second chance.

I don't think it's really a case of expecting too much from Nintendo. I know some people do overhype Directs and that's on them but most people just expect the bare minimum and Nintendo barely even do that.

The main change I want for SS is optional Fi dialogue. Don't have item pickup text reset on reboot either.

I love SS but this so much! I'd be in favour of a pro/jawa mode which changes how much advice Fi hands out to.

It's absolutely shite. All the games look the same. Some androgynous protagonist running around with a huge sword only stopping to squeak at a talking cat before fighting the big boss who's 11 feet tall and made mostly of hair products.

perhaps because switch had 87% market share in Japan last year and they are Japanese company?

Edit: I think they are focusing on where the profit comes from at this point which is the goal of any company.

Ah, but does Japan account for 87% of all Switches sold?

Over 70m Switchs sold globally, 6m in Japan....

Anyway, it's not really Nintendo being obsessed with JRPGs, they're not really making them, they are all third parties mainly.

Yeah, this is the same argument as the Fire Emblem fans saying that TriStrat "stole" their FE announcement slot. NNinty are mostly just showcasing what's coming: it's up to devs to put out other things.

A little late to the game, but here are my thoughts on the Nintendo Direct. (Also Dunkey totally beat me to that Project Triangle Mario joke, but funny to see others thought the same to its poor delivery.
