What price point are people going to be happy with then?

Currently 12 months costs you £17.99 (though I've never paid more than about £13 thanks to shopping around)

If the "+ Expansion" version comes in at say £22.99 for a £5 annual bump then I'll be happy, a £10 increase £27.99 and I *may* still go for it. Anything beyond that and they can GTFO

Do Sony and Microsoft currently charge those people who purchase their consoles an additional fee to use the online features of games for those consoles?

Also looking forward to trying out the new Mario Golf stuff later on.

If the games would have cost £5 individually and the charge (which can be 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 12 months at the moment) doesn't increase dramatically I think that's OK tbh.

I'd gladly pay 1 month subscription to rinse a load of NES, snes, N64 and megadrive games.

If people don't miss online play until one game comes around you want to try it with it's like £7. Those are fairly flexible options.

I think online play should be free on all the consoles. Wasn't it known one of the things that proped up Microsoft's xbox division was xbox live?

If that weren't the case I doubt Nintendo would ever have come under pressure by investors (and Gamespy collapsed), also when Sony started doing it.

Yes but if you buy the game at £5 then it's yours (to the extent that any digital content is) - this service is just signing up to rent them basically. There's definitely a value proposition trade off to be factored in.

I think there should be both options for sure. Like you could pay an unlock fee for a specific game so it remains playable forever and the rest just sit there only active if your sub is.

Xbox have since 360, PS have since PS4. Nintendo was the last console with free online on the WiiU. Now it's only PC that has free online.

There are some exceptions - I think F2P games tend to not require an online sub these days?

The annoying thing is that none of the consoles offer online play as a standalone subscription. With PS+ and Xbox Live Gold you are paying for online play, but also for monthly games (and I guess some other discounts/promotions). They use these to "justify" the higher price, but if all you are interested in is playing online you are forced into paying for something you don't want. I very rarely play any of the monthly PS+ games, I would pay for a cheaper online play only sub if I could.

NSO is going in a similar direction, but with a virtual console library rather than free monthly games. At least they have tiered it somewhat with the N64/Megadrive releases, but it seems an odd way to do it. It'd make a lot more sense if they offered "online play only" and "all virtual console" as the two tiers, bundling N64 and Megadrive in with NES and SNES on the more expensive sub, but I guess to do that now they'd have to drop the price of the lower tier so they've gone this confused route instead.

You can play f2p games on switch without NSO yeah.

I think that's the case for fortnite and apex etc on PS and XB too.

It's Game Pass crossed with Virtual Console, really.

Wanting new games is fair, but not sure why you wouldn't count new games just because they have previously been announced. Especially Bayonetta 3, which has basically only been announced as "we are making it" until now! Similarly Splatoon 3, Project Triangle Strategy and Metroid Dread are all new games that you definitely haven't played before, even if they have been previously announced.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is new, as is the DLC for Age of Calamity, Animal Crossing and Mario Golf.

I get where Celer is coming from (new games we haven't heard of are definitely the most exciting things, and Kirby was the announcement of the Direct for me - pieces of DLC are in no way comparable IMO), but at the same time I feel like it speaks to an off calibration of expectations. There was no way we were getting a big new game for 2021Q4, so the most it felt sensible to expect was a big exciting game for Q1 - which, in the shape of Kirby, we got. We'll heat more about Q1 games in a January Direct I imagine. Now, if you don't like Kirby that's obviously no good, in which case - welcome to how I felt about Q1 2020!

Without wishing to labour the point as it's really not a big deal, my disappointment stems from the fact since Animal Crossing was launched in March 2020 Nintendo has published two new first-party developed titles – Game Builder Garage and Big Brain Academy (I know they've helped out on a few second/third party titles like WarioWare and Metroid Dread).

As someone who's been playing Nintendo games since the NES, and who bought a Switch to enjoy amazing first-party games like those in the past, that's really underwhelming. At the moment we know they're working on Splatoon 3 (which looks super similar to Splatoon 2), and BOTW2 (which will be fabulous, but will it even arrive in 2022?).

I get that I'm an outlier with this opinion – as I know many of you absolutely love the Switch – but that's why for me the Switch has one of the weakest line-ups in terms of first-party output of all Nintendo consoles. I certainly don't dislike the Switch, it's just a bit of a disappointment for me, that's all.

I can see the extended sub being £12 extra a year or an extra £2 a month, personally I’m not all that fussed on N64 games so I’ll stick with my standard sub which runs out next March and then see how it’s going. Keep in mind how slow they are at adding games to the service

I'm completely with you on Nintendo over the last two years, Celer! In fact I'm not a fan of Animal Crossing so I'm more than with you. My point was that I think expecting loads of new titles from a September Direct where we basically knew the Q4 release schedule was setting yourself up for disappointment, but as for the last two years I'm with you. I'm not sure about consoles, but the Switch definitely has one of the weaker first-party line-ups of Nintendo generations (lumping together handheld and home). At this stage I think it's undeniable that COVID has really hit Nintendo harder than almost anyone else in the industry.

I would disagree on excluding games like Metroid Dread: as long as we're getting Nintendo-quality games from Nintendo franchises it doesn't matter where it comes from, surely? What does count for me is that none of those games have felt like pure Nintendo blockbusters since Animal Crossing, and wouldn't be considered as much on a handheld or home console. Several have been niche or below-par or both. Dread is probably the closest since then.
