Every resident needs their own personality. Eight variants, with slang that becomes uniform after two weeks in town, doesn’t cut it any more.

I guess that's why the Switch iteration is taking so long to even be hinted at? In that New Leaf was so good they're struggling to see what to change/improve on. Not going to lie, I'd play a lot of a HD version of New Leaf :)

This does need a rework though, even if they just triple the amount of personalities so with a full town of 10 chances are you won't have too many of the same type.

Another thing I'd like is a full town map editor for before you move in, this way everyone's town will have part of their own personality thrown in. Also if you'll be the mayor again they really need to improve the way villagers move in, even if it means having allocated plots (placed when you start the game?) which are a mix of grass/flowers when there is no one living there with a fence around.

If they're going to be putting GameCube (I can hope) games on the Switch I'd love the N64/GC version on there to tide us over till the Switch version comes out. Personally the GC version is second behind New Leaf if I were ranking them on the whole.

Animal Crossing is a weird one as I remember getting a Freeloader specifically so I could import it based on the word of mouth it was getting. Absolutely loved it, but after four months or so I felt I'd gotten everything out of it that I wanted and drifted away from it. The others all looked like fairly minor increments and tweaks to that, so I only really scratched the surface of them before moving on to other things.

The way I see a new Animal Crossing starting is the player entering the town hall with Isabelle saying they finally have the permission to move elsewhere. Most villagers have moved on, so the new space will be used to have a new start. On the train, the player looks in the mirror and chooses their look. Isabelle then shows a map of the new land which allows you to edit the paths of the rivers. Upon arrival, you then choose a place for the town hall, your own house, and the positions for the four villagers who will come over the next day. Isabelle says you'll have to earn the money to build the town up, but at the minute there are no shops. The two alpacas from New Leaf arrive on the train and set up a temporary Re-Tail while a proper store is built. The price of all this comes to 80,000 bells. A bit of a steep price to start with, but remember that is seven buildings to build.
Once all the buildings have been built, you'll be introduced to Tom Nook. His company has built everything and is now willing to set up shop on the promise that the town grows and business comes in. He also introduces his nephews, who will be running the general store. This is the introduction to the expanded 'city' concept [or main street]. Between the two green areas is a large cobbled area where shops are built. You - as mayor - have control of this and where everything goes.

I'd like it to be fully 3D. So I can look out to sea at last.

All these leaks mean when this Direct does arrive it will be a bitter disappointment. I guess theyll just have to pad it out with 30 minutes of Smash stuff again.

Oh joy, more Smash

It is a shame for Nintendo (and any third party games that have since been announced) though, from the sounds of it it'd have already been a decent direct with a few surprises (I've seen that a Final Fantasy game is also coming?). Obviously I can't blame them for psotponing but it has taken the shine off it a little. Hopefully they don't leave it too long to air it (maybe early next week?) just so there might be a couple of new and neat things to see.

I just hope Animal Crossing Switch doesn't get leaked............. Why do I do this to myself?

Something I've wanted since Wild World is RPG elements being added to the game. Stuff that incentivises you to do different activities that would "level up" different attributes. So the more you fish the easier it becomes to catch or spot them. Learning skills that could help you track down bugs find treasures. You guys get the idea. '

As for townsfolk, just having more ways to build up friendship and trust would go a long way. Make them more unique with how they treat you which in turn affecting how you approach and treat them. I think it's time we get more complex personalities rather than specific traits too. Stuff like animals being able to get influenced by other animals behaviours. It could have the potential to build more interesting characters.

I'm playing Ni No Kuni 2 atm and the game has a cool Kingdom Building element. It's making me wish AC took some ideas from it cuz' it's been really fun to manage. Something New Leaf kinda missed the mark with imo.

All of these things that are getting announced are probably just within a sizzle reel anyway, so the disappointment is minimal at best if they do show up.

Does anyone have a list of leaks from this direct kicking around? All I can really find are Yoshi and Pokémon things. Is there anything else so far?

I’ve never really “got” the townsfolk in Animal Crossing. Maybe I never dug deep enough, but I always found they were banks of inane dialogue and very little else. I never really saw any reason to talk to them every day.

Was there more to it than that?

I always just enjoyed collecting all the different things like bugs etc and just paying off the mortgage etc (in a sense the more traditional gameplay elements).

if you give them stuff they give you random stuff back, you can also write letters to them and they remember things you said like 3 years ago which can be pretty weird hearing back gooseberry fool you made up ages ago that they "love" etc. writing letters to them is how you get them to stay permanently. You can also go in their house and when they ask for suggestions for new furniture, give them horrible gooseberry fool and watch it propagate over time into some cringeworthy pastiche of stuff you don't want

I also enjoy dumping gooseberry fool in the shop and suggesting obscene prices for it.

Your concept sounds cool, DR! I like the idea of setting up the landscape and placing those first buildings.

Did they ever actually buy any of the stuff you charged too much for though? Nothing ever seemed to sell in my town unless it was cheap :( does the rich town make much difference? I always had mine on the beautiful (?) town so my flowers didn't die :)

Yeah, I've never sold much through that shop display option. I use the "late night" mode or whatever it's called; when I play New Leaf, I tend to pop in at around 22:00 / 23:00 and I want the shops to be open.

You realise there are 300+ villagers right? That would be insanely difficult. Maybe keep the 8 variants but then have say 4 sub-variants under each variant. 32 variants, essentially. That would keep things fresh for a long time. I won't disagree that hearing one villager say literally the exact same thing as another villager isn't disappointing, but from a dev perspective I can see why they limited it. I feel like with New Leaf they focused more on the player and what the player can do rather than the villagers and their dialogue as they did in previous entries.

What I'd like to see from the new Animal Crossing is better accessibility and options in general. In New Leaf, certain tasks quickly became a chore, and scrolling through the same texts over and over again to fulfil those tasks became tiresome. Like, give me some kind of 'quick-sell' option, that kind of thing. At the end of the day, a lot of Animal Crossing's actual gameplay just comes down to your time-management skills. How much can you do in a certain amount of time with the space you're given? The mini-games were alright, so it'b be nice to see more of them, but perhaps instead of just for multiplayer, it was also incorporated into the main game somehow? As someone already mentioned, levelling up skills would be cool and these games could be a means to achieve this as well as visualise your new found abilities and levelled-up skills.

The badges were a great addition to New Leaf so I'd love to see them return, but tone them down a little. Some of them were ridiculous and weren't even challenging. If you were to consider them to be the true way to complete the game (as I sought out to do, that's what ended up giving me an incentive to keep returning), then a lot of badges literally just exist to waste time. Honourable mentions to this are catching 5000 bugs, catching 5000 fish, and pulling 5000 weeds. Bugs are pretty fun to catch, so no quarrels there. Catching fish is a doss though and often boils down to luck, having you pace back and forth water until one appears. So if they changed how fishing works, that'd be welcome. As for the weeds, bare in mind you get 3-4 weeds every day (with no beautiful town set). That's like 1250 days or about 3 and a half years of Animal Crossing. Yikes. Your best bet is to visit a friend's town who doesn't care about weeds and pull all of their's, but bruh... who doesn't care about keeping their town neat and pretty amirite? But for those who don't even know about the badge and just stick their town on beautiful, they're strawberry floated as you only get like 1 weed every few days or something on that setting.

As much as they tried to give the player more freedom and options in New Leaf, it still feels very limited in how much control and influence you really have. Like, you can build things in town to make your town more pretty but that's pretty much it. It'd be nice to build something new and have that thing you built actually contribute to something, and substantially too. The café and police station were cool, but the police station doesn't really give you anything new. It can tell you who's visiting in town on any given day, but chances are you'll be exploring the town and stumble upon them anyway. It also gives you those dark pitfall seeds, which are fun, but serve no purpose in single player. Frequent visits to the café eventually unlock a neat little mini-game which can earn you unique café related furniture, so, good! More like that would be great. Like, imagine building a water well and instead of it just sitting there doing nothing, you could use it to get a capped amount of water every day, and this water could be like it's own form of commodity used for other things and may not be easy to come by otherwise?

I guess I just want to see more things in the new Animal Crossing that do things. So while I want to see it announced in the direct, a part of me hopes they hold back until they create a proper sequel packed with actual content. Also this is an Animal Crossing thread now.
