If they really wanted to (and the timeline meant they needed to) they could probably cover most of the online information via a press release, I mean it'd be better in a direct where you could see it in action, examples of how a feature might benefit a certain game but it probably wouldn't lose much if they just dropped it on their website. Or even just the online segment trimmed from the direct could be uploaded? As long as we get the news probably around a week before the paid online actually launches it'll be fine time wise in my opinion, obviously if it's releasing early next week for example then a press release would be welcomed.

They seemingly can't for some reason though, a direct which didn't officially exist (to most people anyway) until a few hours before the earthquake struck has ruined their fun and they seem to want Nintendo to make it right somehow rather than just waiting a few more days for the direct to get shown.
