I'm annoyed with Mario party, because we bought the switch one (our first MP game) and it was pretty barebones, with only a few boards (and only one was interesting). As such, we didn't play it much, and to see this with loads more stuff in it, but not be offered ass DLC to the previous game, but be a full priced release, means I won't buy it,

Not sure if I'm missing the joke, but I had/have a Wii U.

I seem to be the only person anywhere who thought the Direct was just... okay. Not disappointing, not tremendous. Okay.

Metroid was huge. WarioWare was pretty big. Advance Wars was pretty big: any slight sadness that it wasn't an all-new game surely has to be tempered by the suspicion that we wouldn't get any more Advance Wars ever again. Monkey Ball was a a thing, and probably better than a new one would be at this point.

Anyone thinking that Nintendo wouldn't spend too long on games we know are coming soon, an RPG (in this case SMTV), and Smash hasn't been paying attention. I'm not saying it's good, just that expectations need to be kept in check for these areas. Anyway I have definitely seen enough Smash to last a lifetime (and the character announced was a dud for me).

Mixed thoughts about Zelda. I was pleased that we didn't get more Wii U rehashes, and not pleased at all that we got another rip-off Game and Watch. Still, you'd hope that won't impact resources anywhere that matters. The BotW2 trailer looked immense but we didn't even get a name. Also I've seen people saying that they're reusing the first game's Hyrule? Bit duff if true.

I too was expecting One More Thing, especially since Nintendo still don't have any real 'killer apps.' this year.

All in all, it seemed pretty average to me. Definitely the best Direct we've had in a while, but it's because of that that it felt like it might be, should be even, absolutely phenomenal. It wasn't that. It was okay.

We've known they're reusing the same Hyrule for 2 years.

The only thing that 1 more thing could realistically have been is Mario or DK.

I was just glad we're getting 3 ignored franchises back rather than the same old routine of Kirby, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade that we've had for what feels like forever.

I'm not sure ass DLC is very Nintendo, or family friendly for that matter.

I agree with Balla that the Direct needed that one more thing and for it to be a big un. An EPD project is what it needed-I mentioned the 3D Mario team and the Mario Kart team both being due something.

Oh but we did. Fatal Frame.

Oh yes, forgot about that (although in the line you quote I was thinking specifically about Zelda). I'm not too fussed there though: unlike say Mario 3D World, it feels like a game that not even everyone with a Wii U would have bought first time around. In the same boat as SMT#FE.

I think if they had ended the Direct with one more thing after BOTW2 and it be a new Mario Kart that would have been brilliant. I do think the Zelda section fizzled out with such a brief glimpse.

Yeah, although does seem like it was quite an average game unfortunately.

The Zelda section felt flat as a finale because we got footage of:

*Skyward Sword HD - a game we knew about, a game we have already played, something that's out in weeks and something that was divisive anyway.

*Zelda Game and Watch - a niche retro item with limited appeal and limited availability. Sure to please scalpers everywhere. This did look...okay, largely has it has Link's Awakening in it, but still, not a finale item.

*BOTW2 - while it's a big game, most people expected to see it. It's grand (second) reveal at the end wasn't really a surprise or a "wow" moment for me. What we got was the bare minimum most expected. Expectations were tempered by not much being shown and the release date, which we all guessed Nintendo was saying with fingers crossed behind their backs.

Then they end on something akin to "please wait a bit longer", which is just not great spiel (I know it's probably translated direct from a Japanese saying).

Had they tagged the unveiling of Splatoon 3 on to this Direct right at the end, it would have been left the presentation with a much more resounding conclusion.

+1 for annoyed at the Mario Party thing not being DLC or linked to Super Mario Party.

Yay for Metroid Dread.

I like that we got to see a few older IP's coming back (Advance Wars, WarioWare) gives me hope we will see more of this in the future.

It's been a decent while since the last all-new WarioWare. We had something different on Wii U and a remix thing on 3DS.

The Direct was definitely in "okay" territory for me, like I said before I think only Metroid Dread really excited me, but at the same time I can appreciate that there were lots of things in here that other people were really happy to see, even if they don't interest me personally: Advance Wars, WarioWare etc.

Basically there was enough there to make me come away without feeling "well that was gooseberry fool" but I'd have loved something else solid that really got me excited - the next 3D Mario would have tipped it over into being great for me!

Parksey wrote:For the Mario Party game, I wonder why they didn't add the boards from MP 2 (and maybe 3) in. Wasn't the second game markedly superior to the original?

I thought even today the second game back on the N64 was regarded as the best.

Amongst the MP community MP2/3/4 are considered the best. Personally I prefer 3 because the additional items provide a lot more nuance and strategy and 3 has the best boards.
