Certainly unexpected, but it's aimed at kids after all; and for that, it's a fantastic product...

It certainly appeals to the "gets kids into engineering" side of life, given the edutainment aspect too...

Its not a bad thing, im sure some kids will get enjoyment out of it, its just a painfully strawberry floating laughable idea. Just further proof that Nintendo are a company that have literally nothing to offer me in 2018.

If they sell a lot of these to the kids, who get enjoyment out of it, I don’t see how in any way that could be considered a laughable idea.

And one product alone doesn’t prove Nintendo have nothing to offer in 2018. We’re only two weeks into January and they’ve yet to show their full hand for what they’ll have on offer this year.

It's not expensive. Five kits for $70. At the very worst that's five Sunday afternoons keeping the kids occupied for $14 a go.

Quite a bargain actually and utterly ingenious.

I don't see why people are getting so very upset about it.

if it's successful and people have fun with it then it's probably not a stupid idea....

I said nothing to offer ME. Nintendo are a company i stopped caring about a long time ago. Their output just isnt geared towards my wants as a gamer.

And even if its succesful, it is a stupid idea. Print your own toys out of cardboard? Its essentially making an airfix model out of cardboard, and we all know how well those worked for us as kids.

I know you did and I was making the point we don’t know their 2018 output in full yet so it’s too soon to say they have nothing to offer you.

And if it sells well and kids enjoy it, it’s a great idea, there’s no other way of looking at it.

I simply cannot fathom the lack of perspective that would prevent people from seeing this for the slice of absolute genius which it obviously is.

I'm as impressed by this as I was the original Switch reveal, Nintendo have once again come up with a fantastic new way that gaming can be expanded into new areas, both in terms of who gets involved and what they get out of it.

For people with reservations about the price - I do a fair amount of craft stuff with the kids and my wife is also a primary school teacher so we're fairly aware of the price of craft materials like cardboard, this in no way looks like a rip off to me. You're looking at spending a good £20 on that much cardboard alone (I don't know if Nintendo have published any details on the quality of cardboard stock they are using but it clearly isn't going to be the cheap stuff) and that is before you include the printing and perforating. Add in the other physical items - stickers, sponge, eyelets, string, rubber bands, as well as the software itself and I think you are looking at a very reasonable price.

Well, Brer seems to be stressing that it's not good for him personally, but then also saying it's a stupid idea generally.

I can accept the first part, but not the latter.

Why not?

If it doesn't take off is it then retrospectively a stupid idea?

 No. It's a good idea. It may become a good idea that becomes a commercial success, or a good idea that doesn't.

If it bankrupts Nintendo, and/or makes people stop buying Switches in the tens of millions, then I'll grant you, it'll retrospectively become a stupid idea.

That is a fair point. I have personally spent a small fortune on arts and craft for my children over the years. So yes, looking at Labo from that perspective it probably isn't all that expensive when you get down to it.

No, lots of great ideas dont take off and lots of gooseberry fool ideas are massively successful. Labo is a good idea, its new, its different, its engaging kids in a way that game usually dont. I have zero interest in it, I wont be buying it, but I can see it for the good idea that it is. Shitting on it the whole concept because it holds no appeal to you seems a bit foolish.

I would even disagree with that. It would be a stupid business idea, but the product is still inventive genius. Rax gets it.

Going to show my girls the video tonight, see if it's something they'd be interested in. Given that they're always drawing, painting and creating stuff then I'm guessing the answer will be yes. Could make for a great Christmas present for them both. We've gotten more than our moneys worth out of Disney Infinity, (which they both still play regular now - we've two boxes full of figures!), and between them they've created some fabulous worlds to play in. Myself and the Wife also join in from time to time. Yes, I'm starting to warm up the the idea of Labo.

Absolutely not. It's a stunningly brave move by Nintendo to expand what a games console can be. If it fails, it fails but this will be a commercial failure, not a creative one.

I won't be buying it but I also think it's a fantastic idea that could only have come from Nintendo.
