Nintendo not holding traditional E3 press conference this year?
Apr 24, 2013 by RawmeatCowboy
Official translation here>

Coming from Iwata...

"At this years E3 we will not be announcing a new hardware system, so E3's primary mission will be to have [press, analysts] experience our software. Many people would like to know more about the titles for Wii U that will be announced. We will use the timing of E3 to focus on providing details about our Wii U titles for release this year, and intend to create opportunities for guests to the conference to experience them immediately. We will attempt to use this year's E3 to make announcements in a new way that we have not tried before.

Unlike previous years, we will not have a large-scale [E3] presentation directed to everyone in the world. Instead, we are planning several smaller events focusing on software for America. Among these hands-on events will be one for American distributors and another for western media."

Wow, talk about a major surprise for E3, and not the kind we wanted to see. I'm not sure I 100% believe this yet. We'll have to get comment from Nintendo.

While this is probably a smart move, especially given MS and Sony's mega-console-spectacular events, I will miss Nintendo's traditionally hype-filled event. I will not, however, miss all the boring sales shite, which will no doubt be absent from the Nintendo Directs we'll be getting around E3. We'll be getting all the information we would've got anyway, but in a more streamlined form.

Hopefully they'll really be able to engage with industry movers and shakers behind closed doors and make them properly excited about the system. They should be aiming to get a good few companies on-side.

Seems to me that Nintendo is moving in a different direction to Sony and MS, and having the same platform to present on (E3) and whatever is less important and relevant as a result.

MS seems to be going for an entertainment hub, which is kinda what they've been gunning for all along IMO, Sony kinda similar but with a bit more focus on games, and Nintendo have made it pretty clear they're not interested in running the same race. And why should they, when they can be profitable and successful without having to be number one, so to speak.

I've never seen these Nintendo Direct things, but they seem to going down quite well, and what was that show Nintendo used to do by themselves...Space something?

Shows like that, which appeal to the ever-present Nintendo fanbase will probably make more sense.

If they were going to have their average and to be brutally honest sub par E3 conference this year it simply look pale on comparison especially this year with the next gen consoles waving their dicks about. They can't even report on sales so it's a understandable move but a slightly humiliating one, bit disappointed that they don't have some bomb dropping defiant response to their rivals up their sleeves, at the very least get a few more third parties on their side.

The problem is they will get compared to the other two and will come out third - I hope this doesn't mean we won't be seeing any big hitters!

Mental decision. It's the one time of the year where everyone gets a chance under the spotlight, and they're not going to take it. I mean, it's easier for Nintendo than anyone else. Even if they don't have games ready, just show a made up video of Mario Kart running on Wii U and everyone will jizz themselves into oblivion.

Not really surprised since their Nintendo Directs have become more of a focus over recent years.

Hopefully this doesn't mean there isn't much to show. Maybe just a move towards Nintendo direct style presentations.

Showing just a little bit of software would probably be more harmful than showing nothing at all considering the next gen wow factor will be in full force.

Agree with what Lotus said, theyre not interested in an arms race with Sony and MS, theyre just interested in doing their own thing. No point in having a keynote with no machine to show when the other two are going to be going all out to show off new babies. I prefer the Nintendo approach with the Nintendo Direct events anyway, a lot of smaller reveals throughout the year to keep interest high throughout. Also this doesnt mean they wont have something to show at E3, it just means theyre not having a keynote, they could well have something big to show off in the smaller scale events theyre planning.

They said the new 3D Mario would be shown off at E3, so you'll see it.

Disappointed in a sense because its something I look forward to every year. I'm not surprised though, their may purpose has been replaced by Nintendo directs.

I imagine they'll be relying on their software to do the talking for them on the show floor.

Imagine a Nintendo Direct every day during E3? That would be a brilliant move

If they do a direct like they did last E3 but this time with lots of game software, then I'm in for the hype train.

If anything this probably works out better for me as I think I have an exam the day after they usually do their conference. :dread:

It will be strange not having a traditional conference, but if they hold an hour long Nintendo Direct at the same time then it probably won't be any different for the majority of us. Only the press are (potentially) getting snubbed by this, which is probably why they want to have those press-focused events to balance it out.

You're not going to "win" E3 going up against two console reveal bonanzas (I know they'll both have been technically announced already), so why waste your time and money? Just show off your games. Makes sense.

I think it's pretty obvious why, they have nothing to show.

Wouldn't be surprised years later that Nintendo is focusing on making handheld consoles only.

The Nintendo fanboy inside me hopes not.

Yeah I dont think this is that big a deal. Sure the hype wont be the same and I'll miss the crowd reactions but the Directs are actually much much pacier. Focused on getting the info straight out, not having to appeal to shareholders and chart lovers. Heck Iwata is doing a good job of creating fruit related memes as well. E3's importance is bloated anyway. Major gaming sites will still report the news from the Directs so even if people skip them the announcements will filter through.

Nintendos biggest problem isnt whether to present at E3 or not, its communitcating the worth of the Wii U (and to a lesser extent the 3DS) to the mass market. The mass market does not watch E3 press conferences. They have to remember how good the "We would like to play" ads were at showing the Wii off.

I can see them one day making a hybrid system allowing them to focus all game development resources at the one system. It could easily be the natural evolution of the Wii U.
