My Switch use has always been 99% docked, mostly because my contact lenses made handheld impractical (less definition due to the high distance prescription). I’m using glasses more now, which has revolutionised my handheld experience. As a result, there’s a reason to upgrade from my original Switch to an OLED. Do they ever go on sale? Or do you reckon I’m better off waiting for Switch 2 at this late stage?

At this point I'd say wait, I've been tempted by an OLED a few times in the past year, but holding off just incase the Switch 2 does indeed launch early 2025 as many people seem to think.

Nintendo haven't really dropped the price but you may be able to get a bundle if you shop around.

Personally I'd be waiting for Switch 2 at this point though which will almost certainly release in 2025 and be backwards compatible.

Switch 2 isn't expected to have an OLED panel at launch I thought?

I just hope there is at least an OLED version at launch, even if its a dearer option, the LCD on the Switch is really nice, but the OLED looks fantastic, even just watching YouTube videos of comparisons where it won't look anywhere near as good as in person.

Wasn’t sure about that. Even so, I’d then be playing on the Switch 2, making the OLED S1 redundant.

Think I’ll wait unless there’s a mega discount/offer.

I've got the original and standard models. Personally I'd say the OLED version is a nice-to-have rather than a must-have; it is slightly improved but probably not "spend £300 to upgrade" better. But... any Switch is great; it's a neat system with an absolutely terrific library of games.

Same. Also I fully expected the Switch 2 to launch without an OLED screen, so didn't want to spoil myself with an apparently much better screen on the Switch 1 OLED.

Yeah, rumours suggest no (but they are just rumours of course) but yes, I assumed you'd be playing on a Switch 2 then regardless.

The OLED was a bit of a splurge for me. It's hard to justify the price when my original Switch worked okay but throwing in new joycons (when my original ones were knackered) and a better battery to go with the screen helped me justify the cost.

Might happen after they announced Switch 2 properly

Those are other factors for sure - better battery, spare joycons and an extra dock (I assume the docks are all compatible with each model?).

But it’s probably not worth it now, for the relatively short time until S2.

That was the version that so nearly tempted me

In hindsight I should have just got one, but didn’t think we’d be approaching 2 years later and still be waiting for the Switch successor.

Well another reason was my old switch was pretty nackered

The OLED model I would say is a must have if you played Switch predominantly handheld as that screen along with better battery life add’s a lot to the experience. That said, at this stage you may as well wait until Switch 2, whilst it won’t have an OLED screen it will have an 8” LED which should still be good.

Cheers. Would be useful to have another. Time to start price watching.

The rumours said one model wouldn’t have OLED. I fully expect Nintendo to come out of the door with a Switch 2 Lite at launch. Although it hasn’t exactly dented PS5 sales, Nintendo know we’re in an economic downturn and have less disposable income. Launching the Switch 2 at £350+ (if that is the price) is risky by itself. You throw in a £200 Switch 2 Lite with a smaller LCD display but the same tech and 1080p screen and it makes a big difference to device sales.
