I've not heard of that before, it looks pretty interesting.

I've had a great time with Wonder, Pikmin 4, Advance Wars....but nothing is in the same league as TOTK.

It's a really odd year for me. Two of my top ten games ever came out this year... but they're both remasters. (Metroid Prime is one of them, the other should be guessable from context.) TotK came out and was amazing but felt like a little bit of a comedown after BotW. Mario Wonder was a solid 8/10 for me rather than the world-beater (or World-beater, heh) that others seem to have played. There there are a couple of indies that I really liked but that were noticeably flawed.

I think I'd have to give a multipart answer:
- Best game on Switch this year: Ghost Trick Phantom Detective Remastered
- Best Switch game this year: Tears of the Kingdom
- Favourite Switch game this year: A Space for the Unbound
- Favourite Switch gaming experience this year (i.e. not necessarily a full game): Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed DLC
- Switch game I'd most like to talk excitedly about this year: Chants of Sennaar

I hope you wanted a comprehensive answer Milner. :capnscotty:

I've only played one switch game this year that I can remember which is TOTK, and it's amazing.

I'm currently playing Cross Code on it, but I'm only about 40 minutes in so can't really rate it yet.

Tears of the Kingdom is the best game I’ve played on Switch this year.

Loved Advance Wars and Fire Emblem also.

Chants of Sennaar is one I really want to get to at some point, it seemed to come out of nowhere and got rave reviews.

I wouldn't rave about it per se, it has some quite weak stealth bits... buuuut the linguistic gameplay is like nothing else I've ever played (I'm sure it exists but I haven't played it). Lovely detective work, occasionally obtuse but usually beautiful. Lovely visual style too, and quite an interesting plot. It's a 7/10 for me but a 7/10 that I really like that does lots of good and interesting stuff. Well worth a play!

Same here!

Because those are the only two games I've bought...

Reality is that ToTK is comfortably the best game of the year for me, on any format. Nothing else is even close to being on the same level.

TOTK is my GOTY, just magical from start to finish. The draw distance combined with gliding through the air towards something exciting. 120 hours and not a minute or boredom. Still a huge amount to see and do.

Metroid Prime Remaster was the best suprise of the year, a shadow drop of one of the most requested re releases ever. It's also aged beautifully.

Worth mentioning is Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - DLC - A new cast, new systems and story. 20 hours of fun and adventure.

Very strong year for the switch.

Wish my image sig would work

Now on my radar thanks! And it's re-reminded me of Heaven's Vault (which I never played but Think it's about language etc too?)

TOTK is great even though it still irks me a little how basically everything in it (wells, enemies, caves etc) is logged and accounted. And how formulaic a lot of its design is (every cave has a bubbelfrog, every archipelago has a spirit thing, every stable has a well-quest and a photo quest etc). Both make it feel a bit burnout-dense and stressfully 'symmetrical' and checklist-y to someone like me who tends towards completionism.

And I wish even more was done with some of the powers like Recall, even if only for a set-piece moment (though it may break some of the systemic everything goes nature of the game).

Buuuuut it's still one of the best games I ever played so it's the winner.

Edit: Metroid Prime remastered was a lovely revisit too!

If I was playing Prime for the first time this year with Remastered,.without a doubt that would be my GOTY.

Get yourself Heaven's Vault, a game with a wonderful story and premise of translating an ancient logographic language that absolutely elevates an otherwise quite clunky game.

...this is exactly what Sennaar is. Maybe a tad more elegant than what you describe here, but the stealth certainly has its share of clunk. I think I did cast my eye over Heaven's Vault (and yes I see DoC talking about it too (incidentally DoC what you say about TotK is a big reason it isn't my fave this year, it's overstuffed to its detriment)), but the clunk and more so the 'branching paths' elements put me off. Sennaar is more linear and as a result, much better suited to me. Better looking too!

My Switch GOTY (and GOTY in general) is TotK by a long shot. Not played Mario Wonder or Pikmin 4 yet but I doubt I'd like them more, and I really like those series. TotK just grabbed me in a way that few games do these days.

Also loved F-Zero 99, Fire Emblem Engage and Metroid Prime Remastered. Honourable mention to the Pikmin 1+2 ports as well - they are pretty barebones ports but the small changes they made were welcome, and along with the portability and clean presentation they are my fave versions of those games.

It sure does sound like you've been enjoying some great times on Switch this year, Krik. I had noticed that you were really into F-Zero 99!

You are doing well in upgrading your character in Vampire Survivors. Ghost Trick is held in high regard by many so hopefully you'll enjoy that, too, Fisher.
