What if Aonuma's appearance was a mega troll by Nintendo, since they knew we'd be waiting for the big Zelda news. So, rather than say that a Zelda-specific Direct will be coming next week, they avoid the issue completely, then surprise everyone by announcing that Direct separately to bring the big news everyone was waiting for. A Zelda Showcase on Tuesday, with a Pokémon Showcase on Thursday.

So they're even porting the sales now?

 Your really in a gooseberry fool with them today aren't you? I came to this conclusion about a year ago and have just come to accept the console to be my indie game companion.

Nintendo are strawberry floating dead to me.

I'm going to upload a video of me smashing my Switch with a hammer whilst I rant about how they've betrayed their core audience!

I’ve already seen on Twitter that Skyward Sword releasing in July means we’re set for other games over the rest of the year but why wouldn’t they just announce them and then say they’re releasing later in the year if this was the case?

1 of them is going to be Pokemon and announced in a Pokemon Direct and they've probably got a couple of other things that they're saving for E3.

Sorry, should have said the tweet seemed to be implying other Zelda games (if it’s true, a OoT/MM and WW/TP double packs would be ideal), I hope Diamond/Pearl remakes are happening though!

If they are doing a WW/TP double pack, I can see them announcing that after SS HD releases so as not to take the wind out of its sales.

I reckon they’d all sell sufficiently well regardless of when they announced them to be honest!

Cracking pun from Tom there.

More importantly (IMHO): if we’re getting any more big new games this year, why finish up with a 2022 release?

That was a good pun

Pokémon I can understand, they very much like to announce their own games which is normal for them now, but yeah if other Zelda games are coming I don’t get why they wouldn’t put a trailer in there advertising them for later in the year so when they do show off BoTW 2 no other Zelda games will be there as well.

How many games have Nintendo announced and released since Metroid Prime 4 was announced?

I think the expectation of any direct is that it must have a "one more thing" announcement, and that announcement must be a new never-before-seen game, and it needs to be in a "top-tier" franchise. So we get stuff like Splatoon 3 being announced for 2022 in a direct that is ostensibly about the first half of 2021 because Mario Golf wouldn't cut it.

Yep I know. I worry that it has ramifications for the rest of the year as well. To repeat what I said to Parksey:

Balladeer wrote:My concern, speaking only for myself, is that a 2022 game took the ‘megaton’ slot at the end. Splatoon is big, yes; but there are a host of franchises that, you’d think, would take precedence if we were getting them sooner. To me, that suggests:
- No new 3D or revamped 2D Mario
- No new 2D Zelda
- No new Mario Kart (as if there was any doubt, we had Live last year)
- No other big new impressive-looking 3D adventure, which could have been Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, or a completely new IP (Nintendo do that occasionally)

With BotW2 increasingly looking like it won’t be ready this year, that means you’re potentially looking at Pokémon remakes and maaaaaaybe something like a 2D Metroid (probably also a remake, let’s be honest) or Donkey Kong to take us through the year after a drought, not including ports and remasters. That’s not promising.

Yeah, I think it might put an upper limit on what games Nintendo haven't yet announced for the year, although it's not beyond the realms of possibility that a big title is being held back for an E3-aligned announcement to be released later in the year I wouldn't bet on it.

Perhaps though we underestimate quite how megaton Splatoon 3 plays in other markets. Isn't it absolutely huge in Japan? Whereas a new 2D Zelda would be comparatively small over there.

I do very much worry that 2D Zelda is dead though...
