I forgot Mario & Luigi! And Kid Icarus! And 2D Metroid! License them out to indies if you need to, Nintendo. At a stroke the line-up would look a lot healthier. (They’d all be roguelikes though. :fp: )

Kid Icacrus seems like a great IP to give Next Level Games a bash at next in my opinion.

I think we have a decent chance of 2D Metroid coming from Mercurysteam. Samus Returns was, 2017? It didn't sell that well, but surely no reason for Nintendo not to let them have a go at a Switch entry.

There’s your reason, I expect, sadly. :( I am in any case a little dubious about Mercurysteam’s ability to make a full Metroidvania from scratch: Metroid 2 was level-separated and designed firstly by Nintendo, while Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate was I believe their work too and is one of the most average games I’ve ever played. Would be better than nothing though!

 @ Partridge

And yeah I fall on the Tomous/Balla side of the fence here, I think there is scope to be irked that we've had some dry patches in the Switch release schedule and there's nothing wrong with wanting more games of the quality they've given us in 2017 and 2019, but people seem very quick to forget that there are an awful lot of fantastic big games that have been released on the system!

When I think about all of the games I have owned and removing nostalgia and "the olden days were better" bias from my thinking it's genuinely hard for me to say that an earlier Nintendo system has a better line up than the Switch.

But yes 2021 does need to deliver some big hitters!

Yep the Switch is unquestionably Nintendo’s best machine of all time for me. I do think that the correct comparison point for the Switch isn’t one single system but one handheld/home console generational pairing, and there it’s a distinctly dodgier story. There’s still time of course!

Yeah, fair points but there is no reason why Nintendo couldn't work with them closely on that. Maybe with a bit of a guidance they could produce something better.

I think that's about right. Nintendo in the 3DS/WiiU era had a lesser powered handheld to fall back on and release things quickly to. But even with older console generations, there were still a massive haul of games appearing on them. Think of how much the Gamecube had released to it by Nintendo within four years. And that was with them supporting the GBA and DS with games as well. Now, obviously we've had big hitters, and we've had some quirky releases (Mario Kart Live, Labo, and even Ring Fit), but it certainly doesn't feel as though the library is two consoles in one - as many thought it would be with the merge of divisions.

However, the games we have been getting have also been full of content and (mostly) feel as though they're pushing the limits of the Switch. The reason for it feeling like we haven't got a fulfilling library of games is because there's fewer games releasing, but the quality of said games is higher than ever. I think that is what the merge of divisions has given us. It's going to take a while for such games to release. I wouldn't say no to a bit more variety in the lineup, though. A new Excite Truck or the return of Battalion Wars. Or some other long-forgotten series. As that's something else that could be making it seem like output has been lacking. Fewer series seeing representation.

I have some sympathy for the "we should be getting two systems worth of games!!!" view point, but at the same time did Nintendo ever actually say this was the approach to expect?

For a start games take a while to make and they continued to support the 3DS for a while which means some teams working on Switch games might have been tied up on the older system and only started work around 2017. But also Nintendo may have just looked at the business side of things and thought - one system with a smaller number of games and developers makes more business sense.

The "Splatoon 2 and Mario Maker 2 are basically ports" argument really irks me though, it even gets said for Smash Ultimate. It's Nintendo's doing because of the oversaturation of ports and deluxe versions but they are absolutely sequels by any reasonable measure!

I think it's clear the output has fallen because of the increased demands of making modern HD games. It was never a simple trade of one console with double the output because making a game for Switch is not comparable to making one for DS (even though it could be if they and the consumer were willing to accept lesser production values, but I'm not sure either are from a mainstream perspective)

Genuinely thought Smash Bros Ultimate was a straight port with more characters
I want all these handheld games that should be quicker to develop like Mario and Luigi, 2D Zelda/Metroid but I fear we're unlikely to see them in place of full blown HD 3D console versions

Well, this might put a damper on any Switch Pro coming soon.

A very nice, simple design for a new Switch, being the first time the Switch itself has got a new colour.

It's a port of Smash 4 in the same way Brawl is a port of Melee

Crumbs! I hadn't expected such a volume of responses!

Looking over your thoughts, in some ways I think I was a bit harsh. I kinda stick by my thinking that the amount of ports put out at £49.99 has been a bit much and it's possibly this that has over-shadowed my perception of the new titles that have been released. The outstanding opening year set the bar high, as well, and I know you can't expect that to happen every year.

I feel that 2020 was a year in which Nintendo could have done even better were it not for COVID impacts. With the PS4 and XBO receiving slightly fewer big games due to the development shift to the new consoles, I was looking to Nintendo for big, must-have titles and they couldn't really deliver. Nintendo still had a smashing year in terms of console sales, of course, but first-party new hit titles seemed few.

I'm looking for more from Nintendo. They've done very well during the past few years and I hope they can build on this with new "must have" games that really push Switch forward.
