I don't know why people moan about Wii U ports, they don't take resources away from first party development so it's not like we'll get less mainline games from Nintendo!!

Oh.

I don’t think I know what Good Job! is. I don’t know if Nintendo published it but I would also add Hyrule Warriors 2 to that scant list.

I don’t have much more to say on 2020. It’s well-trodden ground that it’s been the Switch’s worst year unless you’ve got a massive attraction to older games. 2021 should be good.

In the meanwhile, anybody else picking up the well-reviewed Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin? I’ve been following it since it was the only good-looking thing from the first Direct Mini. Retail version out this week I believe.

Nintendo published games includes a load of games you wouldn't really consider "Nintendo" games, while looking strictly at first-party Nintendo developed games misses half (if not more!) of the titles people would consider "Nintendo" games. It's why comparing those lists never works out well.

2020 releases are now my most played Switch game (ACNH, 500+ hours), my fourth most played Switch game (Hades, 100+ hours) and an expansion for my second most played Switch game (Super Mario Maker 2, 250+ hours). That makes a pretty good argument for 2020 being pretty good for myself.

See, for me the fact that you played Animal Crossing for 500+ hours, and your other points are a multiplat and an expansion for a 2019 title, just lend weight to that view!

Meanwhile I don’t know that most people here would even have heard of my game of 2020. (What The Golf?)

My point is that a "bad year" would be one in which I don't have as much to play, but in fact I've racked up absolutely loads of Switch playtime this year playing content released this year. Hades is up alongside Celeste and Hollow Knight as the best indies available on the system, so if I considered 2018 great for those two games I should do the same here!

It is far more likely to be covid than ports impacting 2020.

Of 2020 ports:

Pikmin 3 port and new content was largelg done by Eightings
3D All Stars was built off an emulater by NERD
3D World is being ported by NST with Bowsers Fury by EAD
Tokyo Mirage ported by Atlas
Xenoblade DE was remastered by Monolith

Of that, the only real impact to Nintendo's internal first party development is Bowser's Fury taking about from a brand new 3D Mario and Xenoblade DE probably took resource from whatever they're doing with XC3.

Bowser's Fury is frustrating for people who don't want to double dip on 3D World. It would be nice if they offer that as a standalone for those people. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Covid has delayed more than people realise in 2020. 2021 should tell us.

It is a bad year for releases for big internal Nintendo titles, there is no denying that but personally, I've found it to be a great year for my Switch too.

There is an argument for saying that 2018, a year in which Nintendo was still recovering from perhaps its greatest year ever and the Switch was still in its infancy, was worse than 2020. However the argument as to what the Switch’s worst year was/is is a chuffing miserable one, and why I’d rather look forward at what’s coming next rather than back at 2020! Hence the Sakuna comment.

Since release I've not yet had any point at which I haven't had anything to play on Switch, so to be honest there is not a bad year or even month by that measure :P

I think I'm always that way with handhelds though, and there is nothing competing with the Switch for handheld playtime.

Pikmin 3 being pushed to October and a mosou game being the holiday title suggests to me 2 titles got delayed.

I'm optimistic for 2021.

2020 has been a solid year for Switch, better than 2018 from what I remember but I’ve slept a lot since then so can’t recall what big hitters there were  I can only remember Pokémon Let’s Go as far as big first party games went :shifty:

With the first year the Switch had with BoTW and Odyssey, a Nintendo platform finally getting Skyrim etc, subsequent years were always going to struggle to beat it in my opinion, 2019 was really strong towards the end with Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword & Shield and then the Witcher 3 as a huge third party game. 2020 hasn’t been bad at all for the Switch! Got a new Animal Crossing, Pokémon DLC, 3D All Stars, Pikmin 3 deluxe, No More Heroes 1 & 2, remaster of the best Xenoblade plus some great games from indies and other developers, Ori 2 probably being the highlight for me after how much I loved the first one! Not got around to playing 3D All Stars or Ori 2 yet but I’m already sure I’ll love Ori 2 just as much as the first one and Mario is just stuff I’ve played before (which is probably why 2020 isn’t a great year for the Switch, as a lot of the big games have been ports/remasters) so bound to enjoy that.

I’m hoping 2021 will be a killer year for the Switch, Nintendo must know they’ll need to release plenty of stuff to keep selling consoles like they have been so far with the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles now on the market. As they seem to be announcing stuff in other ways and with a much shorter window it’s hard to say what we’ll get next year past BoTW 2 and a probable Pokémon remaster/re-release of some sorts. Unless Nintendo have a nightmare 2021, my Switch will still be played loads more than my Series X next year even if we don’t have a big release every couple of months, I’m hopeful as always that Nintendo will have a strong 2021, new Zelda (plus Zelda’s 35th anniversary next year too so we’ll probably get something for that) plus whatever else is already a strong start for me!

This is me as well. I've always had something great on the go for Switch and both my backlog and wishlist keep getting longer!

I don’t find playtime to be a terribly good metric. I’ve not struggled for things to play this year but few of them have properly excited me.

Tomous wrote:I'm optimistic for 2021.

This was kinda my main point. (Also: Sakuna looks nice; and ‘hey, I haven’t heard of this What The Golf? game, maybe I should go check it out’.)

Oh, yeah, don't get me wrong - there has been plenty of great games arriving on the Switch; it's just that I'd anticipated a bit more from Nintendo themselves - especially after that terrific opening year. I suspect that, as Tomous indicated, COVID has had more of an impact than perhaps we had anticipated and possibly this could continue into the first quarter of next year, too.

Switch is by far my most played console, I've barely touched the PS5 in the last 6 months apart from playing TLOU2.

Agreed with all of this. Also: I think my expectations were set unsustainably high after 2017, which probably benefited from Nintendo dropping the Wii U like a bag of dog waste and switching to Switch development early.

What Nintendo need to do is expand Retro and NLG (they need to buy them up too) so they are 2 games studios and not 1 game. And when that 1 game gets cancelled youre left with a decade without a release in Retro's case.

I dont see why they are adverse to this investment. NLG and Retro produce good games and with the Nintendo IPs available it seems a no brainer to me.
