Nintendo has - very deservedly, IMHO - gained lots of praise for the launch of the Switch and the huge range of indie games it has attracted to the system.
I do wonder, though, if some goodwill is being eroded by the lack of original first-party titles on the system. I enjoy checking out Nintendo Life website for Switch news and even there - a stronghold for Nintendo fans -
folk in the comment sections are increasingly griping about the amount of ports and seemingly few decent new titles.
Nearly four years after the console's launch it is a little frustrating. I recall the talk of attention being focussed upon a single system to increase output, but it doesn't feel like that has happened. In terms of great new first-party titles, I think we've had Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing and Three Houses. Maybe Ring Fit, too, as an off-beat fitness game. Tennis Aces gained a mixed reception.
I guess that for folk who didn't have a U you can also look at the ports such as New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Treasure Tracker, Zelda BotW, DK Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3 and Kart 8 Deluxe. Chuck in Tokyo Mirage Sessions. There have been "new" games such as Splatoon 2 and Mario Maker 2... although I feel that they're just updated ports, too.
I get the argument that the ports are good for non-U owners; they can now play them too! But at £49.99, they're more expensive than the U games were at release; and often a lot more than they are now.
Am I being too harsh? Has Nintendo's output been better than I'm making out?
