I think it's clear the output has fallen because of the increased demands of making modern HD games. It was never a simple trade of one console with double the output because making a game for Switch is not comparable to making one for DS (even though it could be if they and the consumer were willing to accept lesser production values, but I'm not sure either are from a mainstream perspective)

Looking over your thoughts, in some ways I think I was a bit harsh. I kinda stick by my thinking that the amount of ports put out at £49.99 has been a bit much and it's possibly this that has over-shadowed my perception of the new titles that have been released. The outstanding opening year set the bar high, as well, and I know you can't expect that to happen every year.

I feel that 2020 was a year in which Nintendo could have done even better were it not for COVID impacts. With the PS4 and XBO receiving slightly fewer big games due to the development shift to the new consoles, I was looking to Nintendo for big, must-have titles and they couldn't really deliver. Nintendo still had a smashing year in terms of console sales, of course, but first-party new hit titles seemed few.

I'm looking for more from Nintendo. They've done very well during the past few years and I hope they can build on this with new "must have" games that really push Switch forward.

I’ve played bits and pieces of all three of those games, and by far the most of Smash Ultimate. It’s definitely the most porty-feeling of the three!

While I agree with the last paragraph, I personally don’t think it’s a good trade-off. Also at this stage it doesn’t feel like we’ve even got 1.5 machines’ worth of games. Right now it feels like from a games perspective we’ve outright lost out from this new strategy, even though I’m sure more work goes into making a Switch game (more work that I’m not sure I’ve really seen the benefits of outside 2017’s releases personally).

Anyway that’s why I’m so keen on Nintendo farming out their IP to smaller studios. Then the ‘average consumer’ is more likely to accept a smaller budget game!
