While product development is a little behind schedule in some areas due to the impact of COVID19, game releases planned for this fiscal year are currently not affected. However, if the impact of COVID-19 is prolonged or becomes more severe, we may not be able to release future titles in line with existing plans.

So things will be affected, but Nintendo are stubborn and refuse to admit this currently.

Nintendo said from the start that things could be delayed. This is what they said in May:

While game developers continue to work remotely, Nintendo said that the difference in work environments could delay the release of future Nintendo games, too. Problems with childcare, delays in communication, and other work-at-home issues have riddled the videogame industry, reports the New York Times. The company also works with many overseas subsidiaries and companies to produce its games, which are struggling to meet their own deadlines.

“As a result of these factors, we may not be able to proceed with the release of Nintendo products and the start of services as planned,” wrote the company in its report. “This is also true for other software publishers, so it may not be possible to provide game content on Nintendo platforms as planned.” Nintendo planned to release seasonal updates to New Horizons this year, as well as add-on content for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.

The messaging has been... shall we say unclear? They said that Tomous quote, then that TNAG quote, and now they’re back on the ‘may be impacted’ train - which certainly would explain the lack of Directs so far.

I don't really see how the quote TNAG posted contradicts the earlier quote. The whole time they've said things could be delayed but they're always doing their best to minimize it, albeit holding their cards close to their chest on future plans to keep the pressure off.

I also wonder if they have a few things in reserve that they can bump up the schedule. They do occasionally sit on completed games (NSMBU Deluxe most recently I believe). Ports like the rumoured Pikmin 3 and 3D World maybe already done they're just not sure when they're going to release them because of the current uncertainty.

My (craply made) point mainly was that if they're already "a little behind", and "if the impact of COVID-19 is prolonged or becomes more severe, we may not be able to release future titles in line with existing plans." - in my mind, Covid 19 will absolutely be "prolonged", and thinking otherwise is naive.

To me this wording is only to set up that delay could be possible in people's minds, to soften the blow when they announce it.

The messaging has definitely been inconsistent and not necessarily in line with COVID developments.

Remember that their messaging isn't necessarily designed to give an accurate view of things and to keep fans genuinely in the know about the state of their inner workings. A lot of thought will most likely have gone in to how each statement they make regarding the impact of COVID reflects on more important matters like share prices.

Yep, and theyy also can't legally lie to shareholders, hence why the statements don't ever tend to say much for definite.

Seems a huge no brainer, to me, that they should put N64 games on the Switch in the same way they have done with NES and SNES games.

Hell, they could even charge for it, rather than it be a tie-in to NSO. Think about how much people paid for the Mini NES & SNES - they could just charge something similar to that, perhaps even less if they felt uncharacteristically generous, and release the whole package. The games are basically right there given they released them on Virtual Console for Wii and Wii U so it'd be incredibly straightforward to put together - it isn't like they'd have to redevelop or re-code them.

Be a good way to get some goodwill from the fans and some extra wonga to cheer up the shareholders.

Something will come in Septemner. They see it as an incentive to get people to sign up again.

I hope it is N64 games but it could easily just be game boy games.

Q: I quite like JRPGs, particularly the older FF games and Xenoblade. Is Setsuna worth a punt for £15?
