It will if you fancy CFW'ing it.

It does... with Homebrew.

The Vwii is basically a Wii and it basically has a "switch" taht stops it from playing GameCube games, homebrew "flips" it.

WiiU doesn't play gamecube games...?

That's not a question.

It's not?

I thought softmod would be the response. Presumably you need controller adapters too (compared to the wii having ports for controllers and memory cards built in). Also quickly looking it up, you can't actually play GC discs still on the wiiu. So my wii is still very much the only option for playing my gamecube games.

You can rip them to a HDD.

Or run them from the sd card slot

That's a lot of caveats to saying the wiiu plays gamecube games

It does. Same as PC plays GameCube games, just because it takes a tiny bit of effort doesn't mean it's untrue.

There's obviously a distinction between official support of a feature and original media compatibility, and running homebrew with disk images.

Technically I could argue that the wiiu alone doesn't play gamecube games because doing so requires additional hardware components - an SD card or USB drive for nintendont, whatever hardware is required to rip the game discs, and a controller (as the wiiu gamepad is apparently unsupported) ;)

The only hardware you need is the SD card, and you can put games on the SD. You can play Gamecube games on the Wii U gamepad if you can be arsed to set it up.

I also believe nintendont can rip the games itself. I may be wrong there.

I was just reading that the wiiu disc drive will spit GC discs back out. From what I can gather you can rip GC discs from a wii but not a wiiu for that reason.

Fair enough on the gamepad though, I'm just reading this off the internet and I have heard that sometimes things that are written there can be wrong

Yeah, you need the USB controller adapter but as they were available with both Smash bundles there's a decent number of them around. If you've got a wii and a wii u and you want to streamline things a little then it's pretty easy to rip all your GC discs through the Wii and then just bring the hard drive across to the Wii U's Wii mode.

Only downside is it doesn't do Crystal Chronicles co-op with the Game Boy link cable :(

Started ALTTP for the first time. Just got my second heart container, really enjoying it so far.

Super Mario Kart was the first game I ever played, having got a SNES for Christmas in something like 1994. I had a quick go on that and it's absolutely insane  really difficult as well!
