The Switch recently had a hardware refresh. The 2019 model has a better battery. If you buy from a relatively high-turnover shop (like Amazon) you should get the refreshed version. There's a guide on how to tell whether you have a 2017 or a 2019 model here: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/make-sure-you-dont-buy-the-wrong-switch/ If you end up with the old model, you can apparently complain to Nintendo and they'll swap it for free---I don't know if that's official policy but I've seen people on e.g. Reddit saying they did it no hassle.

As a dad buying his son a switch for his birthday in November this is really helpful info. Thanks guys! I didn't even realise there had been a revision.

Can you buy me one please, Dad?

Just to chip in on the new Switch model... yeah, the battery is the same as the one in the older model but the processor has been updated and it is less power-hungry, hence the longer battery life.

The updated version can now be bought from Amazon and ShopTo.

Then again, it could be a good whatever, so I'll hold off rioting until I see what it actually is.

That's not the way we do things around here....

I'll just go get... I'll just go buy some pitchforks and torches then. Unless I meet another rioter on the way, then I'll just borrow some of theirs.

Dalagonash is leaving his Nintendo community manager role!

I don't know the guy very much, but I believe he was a pretty regular poster here in GR at one time.

Had the pleasure of meeting Dala a year or two ago at a convention. He was very busy manning the Nintendo zone and I think he only vaguely remembered me ( :slol: ), but he was still really nice and super friendly, as he always was on here back when he posted regularly.

I know him and Qikz are very good friends, so hopefully Qikz might wish him well on behalf of GRcade!

Quick question re cloud saves though, will all games that support them just automatically save a copy or do I need to load them up in turn to save a copy of the save data to the cloud?

When I subscribed, all my saves from before the subscription had to be manually uploaded to the cloud. It was pretty tedious uploading them all.

Was hoping it wouldn’t be as tedious as that, or is the process relatively easy?

Uploading a save to the cloud is easy and quick. The save files are small so an upload only takes a minute or two for one file. It just takes a while if you have alot of games.

To upload go to a game on the switch menu. press + and go to cloud back up options(or something like that I don't remember the exact option name).

Thanks, I’ll see which games allow me to save a copy when I sign up this evening.

For myself I’m just not interested in a Switch Lite, I might have felt differently if I hadn’t got a Switch already and wasn’t fussed about the docked aspect but even then, for what you miss out on for a saving of £80 I still probably wouldn’t get it especially now the slightly upgraded Switch has a superior battery life to the Switch Lite as well as the original Switch model.

Anyway bought the online, backed up all of my games that can have cloud saves (bit of a shame Let’s Go Pikachu doesn’t support them), now going to load up the SNES app and see what takes my fancy! What that means is that A Link to The Past will more than likely be getting started again :datass:

He's going to do the same role at Rare, I believe!

That's absolutely awesome! He can hang out with Tiarny. (Gosh, GRcade is practically the shadow government of the games industry.)

Karl_: I trust you've been able to find yourself a place within the organization?
Dalagonash: I'm personally overseeing the community of Rare, but it'll still take months to restore the goodwill. We'll have to arrange additional patches and bugfixes in Sea of Thieves. Maybe Battletoads as well.
Karl_: All through proper intermediaries, of course.
Dalagonash: Intermediaries?
Karl_: We have a great number of agencies, who in turn operate other agencies. Boxes stacked one in another. They'll need to be reactivated, but we never touch anything directly. We only influence. Suggest. Insinuate.
Dalagonash: The world must know by now, Karl_. What we've done.
Karl_: Know what? Only that the long night is over. The crown of games is tarnished, but that will fade in time. The bugs, a fever dream; the crashes, a horrible nightmare, and like everything else that happened, such things will only be dimly remembered upon waking to their normal lives. In the end, all sins are forgiven. Even yours.
Dalagonash: What about the next generation Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie?
Karl_: Do you really think they're ready for that? After everything you've seen? Everything you've done?
Dalagonash: No. Not yet.
Karl_: But soon. We have made our own mistakes, became insulated from the world we sought to control, and whatever they may think, the night is far from over. But that will change, and you will help us change even as we teach you, this time... this time we will do it right.
Dalagonash: And who are we? Who are we really?
Karl_: We are the invisible hand. We are GRcade. We came before and after. We are forever. And eventually... eventually, we will lead them into the day.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Loving the SNES app

Already played about an hour of ALTTP and a few levels of Super Mario World. I’ll be trying a bit of Super Metroid next then probably a bit of Mario Kart. Looking at the NES games I’m actually kind of interested in trying the enhanced versions of the two Zelda games and Metroid, where you basically start the game powered up already, one question about these though, what do you get where the upgrades would be? Nothing?

Winckle

My partner is about a quarter of the way into ALTTP now, on the free SNES app. I thought it might be a bit hard for her but actually she's been really enjoying it (with only occasional rewinding!).

Same for me. The portability and the more accessible rewind have me leaning towards Switch, but the joy con button / analogue stick trade off makes it a more difficult decision. I have a wireless 8 bit do for the SNES Classic, which means i can reset etc from the comfort of my sofa (running Hakchi).

System update v9 is out. Plenty of pretty minor changes although one stands out:

> Added “Online Play Invites” section to the User's page.
Invites from friends to join online play in supported software will be displayed in this section.

It seems that you can now send friends an invitation to play in "supported" games :o .
