As someone that has recently brought a Switch after being very on the fence about it - I totally advise getting one.I absolutely love it and am having the gaming time of my life with it
I think this might be the difference between the two of you...
They’ll be hell to pay for Barnsy if I get one & hate it
I won't keep going on about it but I have never felt so spoilt for games. Getting a Switch is worth it just for playing eshop indie games in undocked mode in my opinion. Let alone all the great big first party and third party exclusives on Switch and all the Wii U ports
I wasn't really a big gamer I owned a PS4 and would play the big AAA games like Assassins Creed, Last of Us, RDR and Unchartered. It took me nearly a year to see the credit roll on RDR2 but the lovely thing about the Switch because of undocked mode I get to actually finish games - every game I've played is game of the year material I've finished Goose, Ori, GRIS nearly finshed Zelda LA and am playing through Zelda BOTW and I experimented with a bunch of others - I havent played it beyond the first few kingdoms (and won't for a while because I want to get into BOTW first) but I really believe Mario Odyssey will be my favourite game of all time. My PS4 broke just before I purchased my Switch and I'm not going to bother with Playstation until the next gen - there's probably 50 big games and then all the indies I want to play.
As someone that was never that into video games and never played for long periods of time - I really had to be my parent with the Switch, I could play it all day if I let myself and would smile every second. I love the Switch its just been complete bringer of joy and I'm very grateful to this forum for giving me a gentle push to get one
TLDR yeah I would recommend getting one.
I must warn you though if you read this thread, the eshop / indie thread you will end up spending money
