I didn't play any of the ones before it. The plot was kinda minimal if I remember correctly. Didn't really impact my enjoyment of it.

Heist is a fantastic game! Obviously you have to be a genre fan but it's far, far from rubbish by any measure

It should be said that I'm still looking forward to eventually playing Dig 2. Heist hasn't really killed my interest in them as developers.

Loved both Dig games. Thought that Heist was better still. XCOM without the bullshit percentages.

Currently hooked on Steamworld Dig right now. I love how you can play it in short bursts and there's something really addicting about mining for those gems, and even just smashing through the earth! Also really like the way the upgrades are dished out at just the right intervals to keep it interesting, and the quirkiness and feel of it all.

Saying that, I'm mildly embarrassed that it's a game from 2013, and that I still have Red Dead 2 on PS4 sitting in shrink-wrap on my shelf. And Starlink on Switch, come to that. And in fact I've barely started most of the big games from the last 2 years, such as Odyssey, BoTW, Smash etc.

It's just that when I have ten minutes to play something, without wanting to commit a whole evening to them, some of these big games seem a bit overwhelming. So, loving all these shorter downloadable games on Switch, especially as I can just pick them up and play them on the train etc. It's like they were built for this machine, even though clearly they weren't.

I really think this has been a massive part of me playing games again, from about the previous 5 years where I really couldn't be bothered.

I finished Dig on so many platforms , I just kept buying it in sales and playing it again and again , its like you said its easy to just spend a small amount of time on it 10 minutes here and another 10 there and then before you know it you have finished it again.

What? Is it no good? I haven’t followed it but planned on getting it, having skipped the Wii U entirely.

Well, exactly. What I find is, I play for 10 minutes, and before I know it half an hour has just sailed by and I'm eyeing the time in case I can squeeze in another ten minutes before I really do have to go to sleep this time, no definitely, I mean it this time for sure. And then it's - hmm, I know how to get that orb; hang on, what meetings have I got tomorrow again?

Outside of Mario Maker, which is it's own special case, it's the best 2D Mario game since Super Mario World. Easily the best of the NEW series and has some really good level designs and ideas. If you enjoy 2D Mario games and haven't played it before it's worth picking up.

Hell I picked it up on a whim and I had it back on the Wii U.

Devlin’s right about it being a good game, although ‘best of the NEW series’ is damning with faint praise. It just... I was defending ports not so long ago, in this very thread in fact, but this particular one feels like it’s trying to paper over the fact that we really should have seen a new (not NEW) 2D Mario by now, and haven’t. :?

If you didn’t play it before, though, probably worth picking up.

Ah ok, cheers lads. I was just worried in case they’d totally botched the port. I’ll buy as planned.

I own it on 3 platforms somehow. Same with Guacamelee.

NSMBU and the Luigi expansion are the best 2D Mario titles to me. I loved 100 percenting the former, the latter is something I want to go back and full complete. They are just rock solid in terms of gameplay and design. They fully nailed the movement physics in these games.

At that price though, it's a hard sell if you already own it on Wii U. Newcomers, I would really recommend it to.
