It's (almost) nothing to do with some users having root access though, right? It's about the game servers not running basic consistency checks on user input. The modified client is saying "I want to shoot ten trillion times a second" and the server is unthinkingly saying "OK, seems legit". Everyone has root level access to their PC, it hasn't killed PC online. Server-side anti-cheat can stop dead all but the most subtle hacks, and client-side anti-cheat can take care of the rest and still be very difficult to get around.

The Tegra hack might kill Switch multiplayer but if it does it will be because of Nintendo's laziness and incompetence, not because it was some unpreventable inevitability of hacked hardware.

Do we trust Nintendo to do the smart thing here? They've never been the most forward thinking, up to date or competent when it comes to online things. Then again though, this threatens to ruin their whole online strategy, so you'd think somebody there would be thinking straight.

Their past form (e.g. with Mario Kart games which had a big hacking problem) is that they didn't do anything about it. Which is a shame because it's not even that hard to band-aid the most obvious hacks.

If this endangers Smash Switch online I'm gonna be heckin' pissed.

I think there is a huge security breach on switch. Clearly Klopp has been looking at my FM Touch save file and is buying the exact same players I bought. WTF

The difference here being they're 12 months into the systems life and charging for it from September. Surely they won’t just ignore it? Even by Nintendo’s online standards that would be really poor.

It is indeed. I’m really on the fence with this one. Some of the reviews state its only 5 hours long and that the pinball mechanics are compromised quite heavily (can’t change how hard you hit the ball). Others love it. Think I will see what the overriding impression is in a week from now. No need to add to the back log this minute....

It's the Dock-less Switch that's Japan only. Just a pic of someone showing the box. I just like the minimalist approach to the presentation.

I would buy a couple of those if they launched here to replace the number of 3DS systems we have in the house.
