I've yet again gone for an indie game. This time it's Hot Springs Story, after trying the demo that was released today.
I definitely think having the ability to buy using Gold coins is the reason I'm even going for them.

Switch arrived yesterday.

It's a delight, isn't it? Downloaded a run of demos to see if anything else appeals to me aside from the obvious (going to get Smash Ultimate, and then next year grab Odyssey and Breath of the Wild). Loved what I saw of Arms, and gutted there wasn't a Splatoon 2 demo. Real excited to get stuck in this evening after work, mat get something from the eshop.

Oh and I'll definitely pick up Octopath Traveller at some point.

Most likely to buy Enter the Gungeon tbh

Have enjoyed playing a little Warframe in the meantime.

Picked up Xenoblade 2 Torna today. I have not played the base game due to the length of it being off putting to me.
Is there anything I need to know regarding the combat etc given my significant gap in knowledge from missing out on XC2? Is it all clearly tutorialised for newcomers?

Torna does have tutorials and is designed to be played as a standalone game. What I would say is just see how you get on with it and go online for guidance when you get confused. The base game has a lot of tutorials and despite of this, I still had to watch Youtube videos and ask for advice on here.

The combat is a little different from XC2, its mostly the same buit theres a few tweaks so they have a "full" tutorial at the start. As you play they will add in more and more bits to the combat so if you get a bit lost or feel like youre not doing enough damage just ask on here or look up some guides to see if theres something youre missing.

I’ve bought the Torna DLC as well but like yourself, yet to play it!

If its anything like XC 2 then it’ll have tutorials for just about every aspect of combat but in XC 2 I didn’t really ‘get’ the combat till right near the end due to the advice from the helpful folk on here in the XC 2 thread, I’m hoping when I actually get round to playing Torna it won’t be as hard to pick up like XC 2 was (so much so I ended up putting it down for a while after about 30 hours, eventually completing it in about 65 to 70 hours. Granted I missed out on a lot of the side quests but I found a lot of them were essentially fetch quests (barring the Blade quests) so got fed up with everything but the main story about 40 hours in.

Thanks for the replys all. I'm reassured there is a full tutorial in there - I'm not scared of reading up on stuff so long as though I can see if I am doing what it says correctly. The combat complexity actually scared me off the base game, but I got some store credit in cex today selling an old 360 controller and felt I would make an impulse purchase.

Alrighty then! As a new Switch owner, what are some things I should be looking into investing in? Now, games aren't such a priority as Smash Ultimate comes out next week and that is going to monopolise my time. I am keeping a list of physical and download games that interest me though, which looks like such:

Physical
Super Mario Odyssey
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Octopath Traveller

(less desired but still wanted)
Splatoon 2
Arms
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Digital
Celeste
Enter the Gungeon
Golf Story
Actually countless more that I can't name off the top of my head

Main thing I'm interested in asking, are there any accessories I should look into getting? I reckon a case is likely for travel purposes, what about screen protectors and things like that?

Am loving this console by the way. Very stylish and easy to use, and that docked/portable functionality is an absolute dream.

Mario + Rabbids is a must buy.

Also consider Captain Toad and Tropical Freeze.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

I´d recommend a grip if you find the console uncomfortable in handheld mode. Can get glass screen protectors easily / cheaply, had one on since I got the console. You might want a micro SD card if you're getting bigger games digitally, but you'll probably be fine without one with the types of games you've listed.

The Pro Controller is excellent, and my preferred way to play.

Games-wise, if you play in local co-op, you might like Snipperclips. There's Mario Party too (haven't tried it though), and a recently released MP Joy-con bundle. Pokemon is good if you like them, and Mario + Rabbids always gets mentioned. Plenty of demos to try, including Arms and Octopath (the Octopath save data carries over to the main game too).

Did you own a Wii U? If not, there are lots of excellent ports (Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong, Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors, etc.).

I never owned a Wii U. Some of those ports are of definite interest (not Hyrule Warriors as I did get the 3DS version of that), things to consider for next year. Outside of Odyssey/Octopath/BotW, I consider most other games as being properly on the back burner unless they turn up at a great price. I don't really get a lot of proper gaming time these days so am going to hold fire on building a large library of games. Again, unless they appear for great prices (though with some being Nintendo titles, ha unlikely).

Yes to Mario Rabbids! If the Gold Edition goes for as good a price as it did recently I may look into that as my post-Smash purchase. I ideally prefer to have physical copies of games if I can help it.

If you never owned a Wii U then I’d say Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a must have as well (time/budget depending of course), easily the best version of Mario Kart in my opinion!

I’d say Mario Odyssey and Breath of The Wild go without saying though, personally I’ve yet to properly click with Octopath but I reckon I’ll give it a go for the third time in the new year, you might click with it from the get go though. Pokémon Let’s Go might be on your radar if you’re a Pokémon fan. Mario and Rabbids is superb, wasn’t expecting it to be anywhere near as good as it turned out to be.

Sadly I can’t speak much for the accessories, only ones I’ve bought are a screen protector and a case for the Switch for when its not sat in its dock. I keep pondering a pro controller but I have no issues with using both joy cons in the provided grip, does a perfectly fine job for myself.
