2021 has been really good so far and is going to end on a high note too with Metroid and Pokémon for myself. It’s hard to think what’s been the worst year really, probably between 2018 and 2020 for me personally but the few games I did buy each of those years I loved! Well except Octopath Traveller which I’ve bounced off of a few times….. If I had to pick the ‘worst’ year it’d probably be 2018, thankfully 2017’s amazing year meant I was just playing more of those though so even then it was far from a bad year for me.

Now we know 2021, I'm going to update my ranking based on how I think it'll play out

2017 > 2019 > 2021 > 2020 > 2018

2021 having a Zelda, Mario and Metroid all having a game out is pretty damn great

For me 2021 is shaping up to be another "eh, good enough I guess" kind of year on Switch. Probably not the worst year, but certainly far from the best.

If I'm brutally honest I would still argue that 2017 has been the only "excellent" year from the Switch - it's certainly the only year where they released multiple games I would consider to be truly exceptional.

I'd probably go with:

2017 > 2019 > 2021 > 2020 > 2018

My list of games purchased for each year is below. My higher rating for this year is really riding on the hope that both Skyward Sword and Metroid are really strawberry floating good, and that when I finally get around to buying Monster Hunter it's as good as everyone is making it out to be...

2021
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Game Builder Garage
Skyward Sword HD
Metroid Dread
Monster Hunter Rise
Monster Hunter Stories 2
Mario Golf

2020
Xenoblade Chronicles DE
Super Mario 3D All-Stars
Streets of Rage 4
Just Dance 2021
Super Mario Bros. 35
Sonic 2

2019
Tetris 99
Doom II
Doom 1993
Final Fantasy VII
Super Mario Maker 2
Ring Fit Adventure
Final Fantasy XII
Luigi's Mansion 3

2018
Sonic 1
Alwa's Awakening
Dead Cells
Mario Tennis Aces
Minecraft
Steamworld Dig
Celeste
Dark Souls Remastered
Hollow Knight

2017
Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Mario + Rabbids
Sonic Mania
Stardew Valley
Rocket League
Axiom Verge
Blossom Tales

This is almost my ranking. I'd put 2018 over 2020: Smash and Celeste >> ACNH and Sakuna for me (but there was basically nothing else in 2018).

Also agreed with Jen that 2017 has been the only exceptional year.

2022 could rival 2017 in my opinion.

Depends whether Prime 4 makes it (it won't) and if you like Splatoon (I'm rubbish at it).

Nintendo own the Cruis'n IP, but they licenced it out to Raw Thrills who are the publishers of Crusi'n Blast.

Similarly Koei Tecmo are the publishers of Project Zero/Fatal Frame, but Nintendo co-produced and funded it. (This is a port of the WiiU exclusive game, which was published by Nintendo, but I guess this port is Koei Tecmo published because it is multiplatform)

This is correct. Maybe another > between 1 and 2.

How good a Metroid Prime is is inversely proportional to the number of talking NPCs it has.
