Wow! Four-and-a-half years after launch, the Switch has just had it's best-ever week of sales in the UK! More than the launch week?!? Blimey!

That's genuinely a surprise. I suppose mario kart is an evergreen title in terms of sales, but there's been barely any flagship titles this year. I would have though pokemon is what would have pushed it but I guess not
It's like nintendo doesnt have to do anything and this thing just prints it money

Is that basically what happened to wii, that reportedly had a really high attach rate but was pretty much everyone happy with wii sports and that's about it.

The difference is this is a £270 console with a 7 year old game.

I imagine eShop games now make up the bulk of purchases and there are no figures for that.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Another firmware update, another lack of actual updates. 4 years in and I still can't use a screenshot as a background wallpaper on the Home page, what gives?

That's an exclusive Switch Pro feature. Please understand.

Is there a modern version of that gif with the DS printing money? The Switch needs its own.

Obviously you never know with Nintendo, but at this point I don't think it's ever going to change. They have prioritised system stability and speed over everything else.

Which is the right call IMO. I'd much rather have a fast, usable OS then one that I can hang baubles on.

Plus this is Nintendo we're talking about - if they were to devote programming resources to that kind of thing then we probably wouldn't get a new game from them until about 2024

The Switch does operate pretty slickly... but I have to say that I do miss the baubles that were around on the 3DS and Wii U. The Switch is just so efficient rather than exciting. It can't be that onerous on the processor to allow for a few themes; five years of Basic White and Basic Black is a tad dull.

tbh the Wii had a few more flagships between 2010-11 which is to say in its 4th and 5th years. And even then iirc sales slowed down by 2011 because most people already had a wii by that point

imo high attach rate with wii is basically a combo of wii sports, mario kart, nsmbw, and infinite shovelware

Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit (2 entries) and Wii Play too.

And this isn't some indie company that doesn't have the resources or know-how to introduce basic features, they're a multi-billion dollar industry-leading business, it's ridiculous that they can't be bothered to do something as simple as introduce background wallpapers or folders to the homepage of their main (only?) piece of hardware. Giving them a pass because "it's Nintendo, you know what they're like, those crazy cats" or arguing that it's either basic features like that OR a slick operating system doesn't pass much muster with me.

I remain stoutly unimpressed.

I guess it's because there's no real profit incentive for them; they don't need to do it so they dont give a strawberry float
the company has gone downhill tbh

They could sell downloadable themes...

Downloadable themes were massive on the 3DS, with hundreds* released. I bought the Animal Crossing ones - each of which had a cool little musical ditty - and had them on random cycle. I then created my own folders and assigned badges from "Badge Arcade" to them. I then setup a few scenes in each folder using the badges... things like Wii consoles, Remotes, DS consoles, Mario imagery, AC imagery; and it all ran fine with no slowdown.

Meanwhile, on Switch I have a "black" (dark grey) background.

* I dunno if it was hundreds. But it was a lot.

I love the Switch's crisp efficiency and the clicky sounds as you navigate its front-end. I just wish they'd make the eShop feel a bit less 14.4bps modem

I'm a big 'I will take a smidgeon less efficiency for some actual soul' person. Nintendo's always been about putting the fun in functionality, and it's a little sad to see them go so sterile with the Switch.
