I think my one concern about the DLC is how long it’ll be part of the subscription, will it be an active part of it for the duration while your sub is active? Or will it be on there for 6 months before getting replaced by another, newer bit of DLC for one of their games meaning you have to buy it anyway? It’s not an awful price for it, but it’s probably more than many people were expecting (myself included) which is probably why a lot of reactions aren’t that positive. I’m going to get it eventually, just need more N64 games than OoT and Star Fox to play to tempt me in!

I'll definitely sub once things like paper Mario are available.

well they describe it as downloading the dlc onto your console. and at that point they cant exactly take it off you without corrupting your game file. they probably could do it but it seems like a lot of effort and bad PR for very little reward on their part

Hopefully it’ll be the case that once you’ve got it, you’ve got it while ever you’ve got an active subscription, so maybe it needs connecting to the web like the NES/SNES apps do once a week? So they must have some way of stopping play for people who’s subscription lapses, obviously I imagine some features will be available for good that are basically crossing over between the DLC and main game, like partition walls for example, but I could see the travelling to the island to work could be stopped to get people to buy it if they remove it as a free bonus of the online subscription.

I don't think it has been confirmed yet but I'm wondering what happens if you go for the "Expansion" subscription (£35) but afterwards revert to the standard subscription; will you still be able to use the Animal Crossing DLC? I suspect not.

It also feels a bit crazy that folk who were keen on paying a bit more in order to access the N64 and Mega Drive games - but aren't Animal Crossing fans - now have to pay a lot more on the basis of the AC DLC.

Edit: Although, to be fair on that last point, I guess it's no different to the PS and Xbox subs in that you can't choose games yourself; you get them picked for you. Which is my main bugbear about such sub services.

Those people need to get Animal Crossing New Horizons then :capnscotty:

I jest but when you take the Animal Crossing DLC out of the equation the almost doubled price (at RRP) doesn’t feel as good value for the new subscription tier. I do W onder if we’ll get more paid DLC for Animal Crossing down the line though as the direct said last major free update didn’t it? Not sure what else they could add really though other than a bigger Nook’s shop as the 2.0 version of Animal Crossing alongside the DLC looks great!

I kinda suspect - and hope! - that we do get more DLC for it, Robbo. I'm imagining that Nintendo could offer a separate Animal Crossing pass/subscription rather than awkwardly shoving it into the Online Expansion Pak.

As for the Sega Mega Drive games, just a reminder to folk - including myself! - that you can buy the Sega Mega Drive Classics Collection on cartridge for under £25 at Amazon... and it includes fifty titles.

I’d have preferred an expansion pass for the DLC if we were going to get more down the line but now they’ve released some/all the DLC for it tied into the online sub I don’t know what else to expect going forward.

My major gripe with having to pay extra to access N64 content is that it is ultimately temporary. If Nintendo release a Switch successor in a couple of years and then discontinue support for OG Switch Online a year later, we're talking about paying that extra cost every year for only a few years' access. If you don't have lots of time to play videogames then it isn't worth the extra (unless you opted for the Expansion Pack in place of new games, perhaps).

If there were some kind of guarantee that N64 games would continue to be available for subscribers who'd been paying long enough, even after the Switch becomes an 'old' console, then I'd be more content to fork out for the extra. As it stands, I can't justify the cost.

Agree with lots of these sentiments. Bit annoyed I can't pay monthly. Still, I paid a lot more for a mini SNES that I will do for this plus N64 controller and I'll likely play it much more.

They don't want people paying £3 and blitzing through all the games and then cancelling.

Do you mean for Switch online? I'm talking about the expansion pass which I thought was 12 months only?

I feel cheated that I spent money buying most of these games on the Wii-U but they are completely useless unless I want yet another old console hooked up.

Very reluctant to spend anymore money on Nintendo's back catalogue. I have about 5 copies of Ocarina of Time for example across N64, Wii, Wii-U, 3DS and Gamecube.

Heck maybe even 6 copies as my Wind Waker Ltd edition came with Ocarina in a 2 disk box and the special run Zelda collection disk.

Oh I’m sorry I completely misunderstood

Yeah, it's gonna be interesting, Robbo, and I'm not sure what to expect, either. I would have preferred some sort of season/battle pass system just for Animal Crossing rather than tying it in with general online play costs. It feels like Nintendo's approach has gotten a bit messy, with online fees, family passes, virtual console and DLC for a single game all being chucked together rather haphazardly.

Unfortunately that collection is infamous for input lag (although I've not played it myself). Fine for Shining Force but less so for Sonic.

Hopefully M2 are on the NSO versions...

Sega are also releasing a Sonic classics collection on Switch next year.

Apparently talk is that the price is high due to licensing costs, especially Sega games. When Wii first launched VC it was unique that we got all these classic games releasing on a single service. Since then a lot of the 3rd party devs have just gone out and released old game collections themselves so maybe Nintendo should have just stuck to releasing their own games if 3rd parties were wanting too much money? At this point those Mega Drive games have been released in so many different forms they are not exactly an appealing get anyway
