My Metroid Dread arrived today and is going away for Xmas. So tempting to crack into it.

Speaking of demos, I tried one for a game called Okinawa Rush last night, bizarrely, the tutorial has what appears to be Xbox button prompts

I picked up a Switch Lite this week and so far I love it! Some games clearly work better as portable-only titles (Animal Crossing, Sonic Rush, Pokemon) but I really got it so I can actually play some of the games! My home gaming time is limited and my Joycons are knackered so I cannot play the family one as a portable.

This way I can finally get into MHRise and finish Xenoblade on my lunch breaks.

Oh wow, people actually tried to defend Banjo in here!

It's a platformer - a genre where your interaction with the world is almost entirely encapsulated in your movement through it - and it has gooseberry fool control and player feel. It fails out of the box for this reason alone.

Beats Mario in terms of story/humour?! Seriously? If your love of "humour" extends about as far as fart gags and primary school playground name calling then yeah I guess you could give it the win there, but Mario wipes the floor with it here through the simple "less is more" principle!

See, this is why we need to move to a new forum and get rid of all the old posts!

But, to counter the point genuinely - I never said there was anything inherently wrong with a fart gag, just that if your game never goes beyond the level of that and childish "banter" then I think it's fair to say you've missed the bar when it comes to provind compelling story and character ;)

EDIT: also I'm now retrospectively annoyed by the typo of "arbeit" there :x

Nintendo Switch OLED UK launch significantly bigger than Switch Lite
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2021-10-13-nintendo-switch-oled-uk-launch-significantly-bigger-than-switch-lite

Nintendo Switch OLED has got off to a strong start in the UK, according to data from GfK Entertainment.

Last week was the 14th biggest week for Switch console sales in the UK since the machine launched in 2017. All 13 higher positions are during the peak Christmas and Black Friday sales periods, or the launch week of the Switch itself (which is the fourth biggest week overall).

It comfortably outperformed the launch week of the Nintendo Switch Lite in 2019, which ranks as the 57th biggest week for Switch.

This isn't true though. Banjo-Kazooie leans more into exploration, puzzle solving and more variety in a broad action-adventure sense, whereas Super Mario 64, while it has some of these elements, is more of a pure platforming game. Yes at it's mechanical core Banjo is a 3D platformer, but the objective of the game is far from just a test of platforming ability. I think that's reflected in SM64 having levels that rearrange for specific course objectives, kicking you out on collecting the star, while Banjo has you stay in its worlds and explore them as you earn Jiggies for doing different things. It's also reflected in the collectibles, with Banjo having much more emphasis on finding various collectibles like all of the musical notes in a level, the jinjos, even the collectibles needed for the transformations (which typically aren't about how they change the platforming as much as how they change how and where you can explore).

Banjo has more of a focus on learning new abilities and increasing the players moveset and tying that to progress, which is reflected in the hub world design - yes there are gates based on notes and jiggies, but there are also ability based gates such as needing to be able to run up steep slopes or fly. The aforementioned transformations similarly gate exploration and progress.

...but also it plays well, the level design matches the moveset. Banjo wouldn't fare well navigating SM64's courses, but his movement works for the levels he actually has in his own game.
