In buttons-only mode the right stick is used for the sword, so if they made a free camera it would be for motion controls only.

There should be a mode where you press a button to swing the sword like all the other Zeldas, just a suggestion :simper:

I'm assuming they didn't want to just put "the sequel to Breath of the Wild" on there without a logo since they're keeping the real title under wraps for now (which isn't great reasoning but still the sort of reasoning Nintendo would use)

But the game is designed around horizontal, vertical and diagonal swings and thrusts. How would you map those to a button?

Link should simply do the correct slash when you press the button

That trailer mentions that the sticks can be used for the sword and shield when playing in handheld mode or using switch lite. Has there been confirmation that you will be able to use a Pro controller?

I know next to nothing about skyward sword, and so am quite excited about it. I know its not widely loved here, but i seem to gravitate to games that fall on the less popular end of the scale.

Looking at that list, the Switch has some really good stuff coming over the next 4 months or so. I'm pleasantly suprised.

Yeah, they'd have to completely re-design the game for that to work

Actually I think it'd be very funny if they added button controls that made the game play itself so I am on board with this

They've not specifically said it, but it must surely be an option if normal handheld controls can be used.

I would give motion controls a try though, if you've the set-up to use them - in my experience they worked a treat (and probably did for all the many critics like EG and Edge who gave it a 10/10 at the time!). I don't know if it's because I used a new motion-plus controller (gold Zelda one, too), or had an accommodating room set-up, or automatically used more wrist/forearm compared to long-arm sweeps, or even something else - but for me they worked as Nintendo presumably intended.

If the Joy-Cons really do have better controls in this update then I'm even keen-er!

I remember this video back in the day refuting Gamespot's claims about inaccurate controls, and thought it did a pretty good job of showing how well they can work:

I do also wonder if some people got a little confused at first about which direction to swing the sword depending on the enemy's stance - I know I did! I think at first I didn't realize you had to slash opposite to their guard or even in the same direction. (I think...) And there's a knack to the light-drag to the correct side, before doing your actual slash.

Anyway in truth I am glad that the pad-controls exist to make it more accessible to more people, and I'll have fun giving them a try myself. Many of the game's merits aren't anything to do with the controls so glad if more folk get to experience them without the barrier of motion.

I thought that the controls set it apart from other 3D Zelda games up that point and made for a very enjoyable experience. Watching that video is tempting me to pick up the Switch version for a replay.

The sword controls in Skyward Sword were great and agree that they make it a unique experience among the 3D Zeldas.

I can only assume people who said they didn't work were thrashing the wii remote around like an uncultured swine and didn't have the composure of us skilled wiiswordsmen.

^^^^

The only real improvement I felt they needed at the time was to use the sensor bar for pointer positioning, rather than rely solely on motionplus for it, because it would always drift off for me.

I loved it when the subtlety of the sword controlls really clicked, like when you gently prod a bead of water, and carry it somewhere else. Or when you have to slash in certain directions to break an enemie's guard. It was excellent.

This. I would genuinely say that if you're going to play without motion controls it's not worth buying, although I suspect DoC would disagree.

I have no problem with motion controls in general to be honest. Its just that i have stick drift on one of my joycon.

Edit - looking at the post above it looks like another game off my list

Eh, who knows - never tried it! But yeah even as a traditional 3D-Zelda it'd probably still be to my own personal tastes because of the music and sprinting and the rest. Interesting to experiment in the hands.

I do think Skyward Sword has a lot more going for it than just the motion controls-the characters and story, some of the series' best dungeons, Skyloft.

Of course, it has plenty of issues-padding and repetition, too linear and does feel like a slog towards the end. But it's really worth sticking with in my opinion, because when it's good, it's really good.

I cannot be the only person who disagrees with this, surely? I can't be the only person who was bothered by dungeons 5 and 6 repeating the themes of dungeons 3 and 2, or who thought several of the bosses were naff, or that the final dungeon was a mess that needed a finale, or that the lack of new enemies after dungeon 4 was bad? Anybody?

I will agree in the characters though. Groose is almost a selling point in himself. Almost.
