Also, in general (here's a spicy take for you) Nintendo 2D platformers besides DK haven't been too good for a while, so it's not like he has much combination. Mario's still in his sterile 'new' phase, Kirby hasn't had an absolute gem since Epic Yarn and the difficulty will always work against it, Yoshi hasn't had an absolute gem since the SNES (I will accept N64), the less said about Olimar and Chibi-Robo the better... Donkey Kong's the current king of the Nintendo 2D platformer almost by default.

Yeah, I think that's the general consensus rather than a spicy take

I just presume Victor hates the term 'spicy take' rather than that he agrees, which is... good to know. ;)

Mario Maker 2 is a better 2D platformer than anything DK has ever done

Maybe somebody has made a set of worlds where this could apply, but based on what I've played of the SMM2 campaign, nah. Burned my mouth on that one!

Some people can't handle my spice :datass:

But also, the Nintendo created levels for SMM2 are actually really good.

Combine that with the fact that DK is at best average and it's clear who the winner is. ;)

Really? I thought it was pretty good fun for what it was. A nice introduction to the mechanics available to build with a fair bit of variety.

They were obviously limited in how far they could go with some ideas but yeah, fine for what it was.

Koei Tecmo’s president was asked what series he would like to make a Musou game of and he said Mario and Star Wars

Now I want a Mario Musou game

I meant Jenuall's take! The SMM2 campaign is... fine, but a combination of pre-made props and disparate styles (out of necessity, sure) mean it's not fit to pick the ticks out of DK's tie.

SMM2 is like being invited to a swanky event where they've put on an incredible smorgasbord of varied delights for you to sample, each perfectly proportioned and packed with flavour.

DK games are like when your piece of gooseberry fool cousin invites you round for a "dinner party" and you get there to find out he's just ordered an extra bargain bucket from KFC and needs someone else to suffer through the misery with him.

I've only had KFC once and it was rank.

That's enough evidence for me to write off the whole franchise

This is the sort of take where you've ordered a curry that's far too hot for you to impress someone and the burns stay with you for hours afterwards, both on the way in and the way out - which incidentally is still better than KFC.

Also, you asked for some top tracks from Tropical Freeze (and I'm home now not posting on my mobile), so here you go! Tom let me know if I've missed any bangers.

This sets the scene I think. Most of DK's best tunes are orchestral epic, and here's the archetype.

One thing I think sets DKTF above e.g. Mario Galaxy is its range. Galaxy does epic or quiet floaty spacey stuff, and everything else is mediocre. Meanwhile here's the Lion King in a TF level (medley).

Happy calypso? Happy calypso. Also several levels do some really nice track switching when you go into the water, including this one.

I could keep going (we haven't even done my favourite piece!), but let's finish with some epic boss music. This is the first boss! (The final boss music is rubbish.)

Let's get one thing straight: we've got our share of crooked restaurants - fact! - but this is still KFC, and by and large the chicken in this franchise is twenty-four carat gold.
