I'd wanted to avoid being in a situation of paying for more than one "online pass" for consoles and I'd kinda got my mind into a place of that one being PlayStation Plus. But... with the new Animal Crossing expansion making online key for viewing and sharing designs, I'm gonna have to pay for the Nintendo pass too.

These online passes/subscriptions could deter me - and, I suspect, others - from being multi-format gamers as perhaps some of us were in the past. In fact, it's time for a "jawa asks..." on that topic.

Or you could be a "non-online service/DLC" player

I'd like to be, Drum! But... as a Fallout 76 player on PS4 and Animal Crossing (plus maybe Splatoon 3!) player on Switch, the online stuff is necessary. Maybe I'll have to choose!

The poll/discussion thread is up now!

Jenuall wrote:I've actually only bought 4 games on Switch this year:

Metroid Dread
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
Football Manager Touch 2021

It's on course for being the worst Switch year overall for me so far. Dread has done a fair amount to redeem it to be fair

You've made wonder wonder how many Switch games I've bought this year, Jen... am gonna go check. I don't think it's many at all in terms of newly-released games, but I have bought some older titles during sales.

Same, I've bought lots (as I said in the Dread Thread, SM3DW+BF might sneak into the bottom of my top twenty) and have played the odd banger from earlier years as well. Ikenfell and Tales of Vesperia were both games I played for the first time this year that are in my top 25 Switch titles.

Do you recommend Ikenfell then? I keep seeing it and I always wondered what it’s like

I do! It's got a really neat battle system, like really good, as if Mario & Luigi had a more tactical element to it. Some solid dungeoneering, slightly Mother-ish enemy designs, some appealing writing and character work. Downsides: it doesn't quite have long enough to develop fully some of its story ideas, I don't think the pixel art is very nice, and it has the odd excruciating vocal number. All in all though I liked it a lot! No brainer if it's ever 30% off.

I've got quite a few Switch games to buy and catch up on at some point.

Link's Awakening and Mario 3D are two of them. And I want to get Advance Wars at Christmas. Makes me wonder if I really need a Steam Deck.

Picking up a bundle of quotes from the Dread Thread:

site23 wrote:

  You like what you like, of course! I'm only messing with you. To be serious, I'm not actually against visual novels or anything, but I don't think I would personally enjoy Fata Morgana - it sounds pretty heavy.

It bloody is, and I'm not usually here for heavy stuff myself... but I struggled through the heaviness (and, to be honest, a really duff first chapter) and got so much out of it. And that's just the main game, this version includes all the DLC! It's been a little bit of a revelation for me.

Tomous wrote:Those are pretty niche games to say the problem is Jenuall not the release schedule

I disagree on two counts. Firstly, they are niche, yes - but for NEO TWEWY and TGAAC they're the sort of niches that people on gaming fora are likely to know about. I don't think they should be considered niche to us. Secondly, if you're not exploring the more interesting options, even when they're critically acclaimed, then I do think you have to take some of the blame for it being a duff year for yourself! I'm not even saying Jen's done that (see his post below yours), just if you're unwilling to explore the niches then that's on you.

Jenuall wrote:Ace Attorney is a franchise that's just not for me, I've tried a couple and bounced off them hard.

NEO I've never tried but again everything I've seen of the games makes me think I'd be wasting my money

Fata Morgana is a visual novel I believe? It's a genre that's again not one I have found any time traction with in the past

As for point and click games I genuinely think I burned myself out on them during the Amiga heyday, I used to play a huge number but can't seem to get back into them now. Maybe one day!

Switch is still by far my favourite console of the last few generations, and I'm sure I'll pick up some more excellent 2021 titles in the fullness of time, it's just been a bit of an initially underwhelming time based on what I've been tempted into buying so far

That's all fair enough if you've had goes at the franchises or don't like the genres. In that case though (and to be fair I think you're doing this), I think you have to acknowledge that this issue is to a large extent due to your own taste in games. For example, I've got to admit that last year was particularly iffy for me because I don't like musou, modern Paper Marios, roguelikes, or really Animal Crossing very much. I still think that it was 'objectively' a pretty duff year, but for sure a big part of that personal view is due to my tastes.

site23 wrote:My impression is that the Switch schedule has been a bit meatier if you're into JRPG / VN style stuff. Or (shudder) indie games. ;)

This is bang on. In fact apart from Dread and MonHun my top games from this year, including ones I've played from years past, have been exclusively JRPGs and the VN-to-adventure-game spectrum. Fewer indies than sometimes though! Between Dread, MonHun, NEO TWEWY, and Ace Attorney, as well as some stuff bubbling under like Bravely Default 2, the bigger devs have come to the party a bit more this year, even if Nintendo's still been kind of absent.

Nice, could be tempted by this next year in sale, looks like a good port!

To those that think the release schedule on Switch this year hasn’t been great obviously neglect the great indie releases that have come out this year :capnscotty:

I think I'm in the minority as someone that is satisfied with the Switch's recent output. This is all the games I want that are either available or have an upcoming release that I don't have yet.

Pikmin 3 Deluxe (2020)
Monster Hunter Rise (2021)
New Pokémon Snap (2021)
Skyward Sword HD (2021)
Cruis'n Blast (2021)
Wario Ware Get It Together (2021)
Metroid Dread (2021)
Mario Party Superstars (2021)
Advance Wars (2021)

I also just received Bug Fables in the post and have Super Mario Galaxy lined up for Christmas.

I've just started Immortals Fenyx Rising (2020) and before that I got around 130 hours out of Hades (2020).

You are defo not alone with those thoughts, I think Switch has had a great line up the last few years.

I'm quite happy with the Switch as it complements my PC backlog very well. In terms of Switch games, I've still got Future Connected unplayed and Breath of the Wild unfinished before picking up Link's Awakening, Metroid Dread and possibly Advance Wars and Luigi's Mansion 3 (Tropical Freeze as well if I don't plug the Wii U back in). I still mean to return to Odyssey for the post-game and put more time into Smash Ultimate so there's a lot to keep me busy until Breath of the Wild 2, Prime 4 and whatever else is out in the next few years.

What if you've explored those niches before and even played previous games in the series and already determined they aren't for you? :?:

I for one am totally unaware of what NEO TWEWY is, same for that Bravely game and the Fatty Morgan thing.

The other thing that they all have in common is stupid names.

They're all better than Bug Fables, I'll say that much.

It's a fair question - and indeed one I answered to Jenuall in the same post. ;)
