All this talk of XC and XC2. Where's the love for X? I'm not sure what my favourite out of the three is. It is very close between all of them.

I'm inclined to say XC as I find it the least irritating. If X had a better story, better characters, and a UI that wasn't done in 6 point font, it'd be my favourite. Hard to be sure though as I've at least played the other two recently.

XC2 has so much going for it. The story, characters, battle system, world, music...but at the same time I can see why it can be incredibly grindy merely because there is so much content to tap into. I stopped playing for 4 months because I got bored of grinding through so many Affinity Charts and Blade Quests. That and being repeatedly knocked off the edge in Spirit Crucible Elpys while fighting Holy Lancer Efrain.

Picked up Littlewood a couple days ago and played a few hours. It's really quite good as a nice, relaxing game. I'm not normally one for games without some kind of end goal but it looks like there's enough to work towards and unlock that I'd be happy to play a few hours here and there just to chill.

Yeah that was probably the worst aspect of XC2, having to have the right blades equipped, with the right level of combined field goals (gained through the affinity system) to actually progress a couple of points even in the main quest, fingers crossed this never returns  XCX was really good once I got into it, the story was actually very good in my opinion, the ending was just begging for a sequel too! The world was fantastic to explore, especially once you got access to the Skells and could fly everywhere and mess everything up  the one bit I didn’t like was new Los Angeles, the music being the worst offender for me as it was so different to the rest and just felt off. I doubt I’d buy XCX if they released it on Switch but would be there day 1 for a sequel.

Yeah they really could have streamlined that field skills stuf. Its a long game but I'm sure a good few hours get chalked up to menu hopping to change blades for that!

I found the field skill stuff blown out of proportion. There's the occasional change required, nothing major. It's not like Ever Oasis when you need to go back to base every time!

X, now - still a really good game (the Skells  ), but the lack of structure, hella disjointed story, and pretensions of MMO-ness mean it's a distant third on my list. Still, if that's Monolith's equivalent of Adventure of Link, that shows how bloody good they are.

OrangeRKN wrote:You might prefer Legacy then, yeah...

Good, because I've already bought it. :slol: In the past fortnight I've finished Bravely Default 2 (good RPG, could've been great if the dungeons were more fun), Bowser's Fury (good side-game, could've been great if it had been based off Odyssey instead of 3D World), and Creaks (good puzzle game, could've been great if it had developed its puzzles to a better conclusion); and finished with Horace and I Am Dead (not good). So I've bought Alwa 2, The Last Campfire, and West of Loathing to supplement my hunting of monsters. I'm running out of eShop games I want to try!

my main problem with X was the way they handled the party. there were so many characters and even more recruitable characters but the game insisted you had to take the same two characters for the story thus making it feel a bit pointless having such a large selection of characters. even the ones you got as part of the story just disappeared from it as quickly as they were introduced

I never finished X, I think it was just a bit overwhelming all the systems they threw at you at once and it didn't do a particularly good job of explaining a lot of it. One specific problem I had was that it always reset your party to just the main three before/after quests and I never remembered to pick up other people so i just ended up with severely underlevelled characters all the time (on a separate note it seemed to be really, really stingy with xp iirc which made progression a real ballache). For want of a better word it was also a bit too anime for me in comparison to the original XC, I've held off on XC2 so far for the same reason.

the design of two is very anime but theyre a bit more generous with the exp so the grind isnt as bad

Monster Boy is so much less enjoyable than Wonder Boy The Dragons Trap and I’ll be glad when it is over.

Twice as long and half as fun.
This series isn’t a metroidvania but it’s been turned into one with a lot of tedious and annoying design choices thrown on top of it.

Cutting content and making it half the length would have made for a much better game.

I finished X. I thought the difficulty curve in it was really unbalanced. The checkpointing on last boss was also pretty strawberry floating stupid.

I never actually finished X. The final boss obliterated me on my one and only try of it because I didn't have a clue what was going on.

As I mentioned above, XCX is the series' Adventure of Link. Only playing XCX out of them is almost like your only experience of Zelda being Adventure of Link. I would strongly advise you try XC1 with reset expectations.

I've not played Wonder Boy TDT, but otherwise I couldn't disagree more with this statement. Monster Boy's a lovely little Metroidvania: the transformations are great, I really liked most of the bosses, the aesthetics are really nice, the challenge is just right... It's maybe a little generic-feeling in places, but Iput that down to its roots. It's a tad expensive, but in a sale I'd recommend it to most people.

That said, if you're not enjoying it, why wait until it's over? May as well chuck it if that's the case, and get onto something you will like.

As much as I'm intrigued to play XCX to see what all the discussion around it has been about, if it was a toss up between getting a port of that and them working on a possibly XC3 then I'd rather have the latter at this point!

Genuinely unsure how Balla got through XC knowing we share some completionist tendencies and how new sidequests appear and dialogue changes after every little story event and you have to check everywhere at every time of day otherwise you miss them.

I liked it but also it kills the pacing and burnt me out early. I put in some double digit hours but probably could have mainlined through to where I was in only a couple!

It got to a point where I had to squash them. Especially when you get to Agniratha, which I still have bad memories of: a large bland city with lots of sub-quests you're explicitly told will vanish at some point. Around the point where I was trawling it for some glowing crystals that looked the same as all the other glowing crystals but ah, these are a specific type of glowing crystals, I said 'F**k it' and squashed the completionist aspect. It was tough though, and I suspect that's a big reason why I like XC1 less than XC2.
