It's a fair question - and indeed one I answered to Jenuall in the same post. ;)

I dont agree that disliking niche games means the issue is largely down to our personal tastes. I would argue a good release schedule has a broad range of games, mainstream and niche.

I do agree there is an element of personal tastes to it as MH and Snap are big releases and SS and 3D World are undoubtley big games but I dont think it can be largely put down to that alone.

The release schedule does have issues in my opinion but i do accept thats down to covid. I wonder how 2021 would have looked wirh no covid. Splatoon 3 is one I think might have made this year without it.

You're the only person I've seen with anything negative to say about Bug Fables!

I'll certainly let you know what I think once I play it but I do hope you're in the minority. ;)

I don't even disagree here, the release schedule still isn't great and a large part of that is Nintendo being hit by COVID. I disagree on your point that Metroid Dread doesn't have much competition for Switch GotY, and I think the year's better than some people are giving it credit for. Not good, but better. That's all! It's no 2017, or even 2019, but it dumps on 2018 and 2020.

Yes I find the critical consensus on this one really weird! I like my RPGs and I especially like my Mario RPGs, so the discrepancy is strange. Maybe it's because I'm such a big TTYD fan, and so anything that apes it so clearly is going to have to do so incredibly well for it not to bug me. Even then, I can't see how people aren't put off by the poor writing, dull dungeon design, and amateur-hour background art. Maybe they all get much better?

What was so great about 2019? 2020 was better.

To be honest, it sounds like we're largely in agreement except on the dumping on 2020 (but then I love Animal Crossing and enjoyed Paper Mario).

I would clarify that my comment on Switch GotY was from a personal point of view.

Mario Maker 2, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion 3, Links Awakening, Pokemon is an extremely strong run

Ah, OK. Not interested in three of those. Link's Awakening and LM3 were excellent though.

I'm with Drummy, Milner and Dragon - very happy with the Switch line up. But then I don't often find lots of time to play games nowadays, and it's my only console, so it works out well for me personally.

Here's my current and future playlists:

Currently playing:

Animal Crossing (I expect this'll go on and on)
Football Manager 2020 Touch (as above!)
Paper Mario
Phoenix Wright Trilogy
Burnout Paradise
Rocket League

Started but not finished:

Mario 3D All-Stars
Golazo!
Hyrule Warriors

Owned but not started:

The Rainsdowne Players
Phantom Doctrine
Among Us
Horace
SuperMash
Abzu
Pan-Pan

Wanted and out but not owned:

Monster Crown
Eastward
Monkey Ball Banana Mania
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Hades
Kaze and the Wild Masks
Pokemon Snap
Carto
Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
Luigis Mansion 3
Good Job
To The Moon
Forager
Undertale

Wanted and on the horizon:

Advance Wars
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
SkateBird
BotW 2
Storyteller

And if they come to Switch I'll also want:

Lonesome Village
The Wild at Heart
Weird West

I could also arguably get some more game time out of Mario Maker and Civ 6, as I've only scratched the surface, given how massive those games are! Plus I've never touched the DLC for Zelda or Pokemon Sword, and there's DLC for Animal Crossing to come...

So if Nintendo release a successor console before I'm finished with more than half of the above games, I'll likely skip it :datass:

I will say the Animal Crossing paid dlc reframes this year a little for me. It's practically a sequel.

That, with Dread and Advance Wars makes Q4 a banger for me.

Ha, it wasn't even really those for me. More Untitled Goose Game and A Hat in Time. Then I thought ACNH was merely good, and wasn't interested in Age of Calamity, Origami King, or (presumably the big one where Drummy's concerned) Hades.

The big takeaway here is we all have different opinions, and some of them are wrong.

This is actually coming to Switch next month actually, one I am interested in as well. Also hoping Weird West and Death’s Door come.

He's a total, total... a word has yet to be invented to describe how totally whatever-it-is he is, but he is one. And a total, total one at that.
