For anyone who remotely like Donkey Kong Country [New or Old] Kaze and the Wilds Masks is fantastic, it’s like a love letter or homage to those games that is great in its own right. The soundtrack could have used some David Wise but it’s not too shabby.

I’ve played about 13 hours over 2 days each level has 4 completion objectives [if you wish] and the speed runs with online leaderboards are addictive.

I had totally missed this, thanks for the recommendation. I've watched a couple of review videos and it does look very DKC, right down to Dixie's hair throw animation! One for the Watch List for sure.

The high price put me off Kaze - that and, shallow though it is, Kaze doing the Dreamworks face in the promo art. :shifty: I played a platformer that emulated the best of DKC only last year (Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair), and I think I'm all set for now.

Also: no David Wise? Absolute dealbreaker.

This year I've played through both Xenoblade Chronicles 1 & 2.

For a game that released on Wii originally, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 was great. I really enjoyed the battle mechanics and I found myself pretty engaged in the plot and characters. While there was plenty to see and do, I didn't feel it outstayed its welcome and had little need to do significant grinding. The included DLC was a decent extra chunk too and added to the story of a few of the characters. Probably a 9/10 for me.

The sequel certainly builds on its predecessor and took me quite a lot longer to complete due to more side content and some grinding. The addition of blades really adds to the combat - even if the lottery for gaining rare blades is garbage . It does have other issues too, such as some difficulty spikes and the plot and characters didn't connect with me personally. The highly sexualised art style of the female blades in particular was a little embarassing too. A good sequel but evidence that bigger isn't always better, so maybe an 8/10.

(Jenuall klaxon sounds)

Where did you find you had to grind in XC2? I can understand most of your criticisms of the sequel, but I don't remember having to grind at all in either game. One of the good things about them in my opinion.

Now that looks like my kind of game. Thanks loads for the recommendation - never heard of it before.

Like Balladeer I played Yooka Laylee 2 last year but I can never have enough DK clones

Agreed though! I've just looked at the game proper and it looks clean and bright and in-game the character model looks more like a charming Sonic character or something.

But the cover/thumbnail has a proper human face on a weirdly human-proportioned rabbit creature and it looks more like Sonic Movie before the re-design. Like bad fan art or a furry.

I think this makes a difference tbh (though maybe in this case the game is good), because when I see a rubbish thumbnail chosen with a bad eye or sense of taste, I guess I feel this will extend to the game proper - and vibe and aesthetic matters!

Reporting for duty! o7

I don't recall any grind in XC2 either but then I devoured everything it had to offer so was probably overlevelled toward the end either way! I think both games are pretty well pitched throughout in terms of difficulty and progression - anything really hard is either optional or off the beaten track (ignoring lvl 70 gorillas who will strawberry float you up early doors, but then that's pretty much a series signature now! )

The story and characters are what lifts 2 above 1 for me, it resonates way more than the first which felt muddled story wise and most of the main crew were harder to give a gooseberry fool about IMO. Despite the anime indulgences and sometimes facepalm art direction I think the second game actually explores far deeper and more "mature" subject matter.

I never quite got the issue with the blade RNG - unless you're going for a completionist approach then who gives a gooseberry fool which blades you get? You can put together a more than good enough team with what you get playing "naturally" and without needing to grind it and farm core crystals etc.

The battle system is what really elevates 2 for me though, when it comes together it's just perfection

Ultimately they're both cracking games though! :toot:

Seems we might be getting some news from Nintendo this week, Thursday potentially, few places hinting towards it.

I fired up Splatoon 2 over the weekend, it’s still great fun, only played a couple of single player games and 1 only online but I might put some time back into it and get back into the online

Anyone here still play it?

There were a couple of points where my level suggested I'd be okay but then I'd just get absolutely destroyed before going away and levelling up, improving equipment, etc. Could be it was more related to my party not being balanced or optimised with the right equipment rather than being underlevelled and needing to grind. The 2 instances I recall were the final boss and one of the large mech enemies in the world tree. As mentioned, most of the toughest enemies are optional and avoidable.

There was definitely more ambition and depth to the sequels plot but I think with the sheer length of the game and the annoyingness of certain main cast characters, I ultimately just stopped caring and ultimately started skipping cutscenes. I also think the serious tones clashed with the wackier, more comical elements for me in a way its predecessor didn't.

I agree, the battle system in 2 is superb. Definitely want to see more of that in a third game, although I do still have the Torna prequel to check out at some point before then.

I was definitely over-levelled by the time I got into the world tree, I didn't have much of a problem with anything including the final boss. In fact this was pretty much the case with XC1 as well - all of the build up of how powerful the final boss was going to be and characters shouting lines like "Today we defeat a GOD!!!!" was all slightly undercut by me trampling all over him without even trying! :slol:

And I still need to actually play Torna :fp:

There's not really any grind in XC2 in my opinion. It's there if you want it, but there's the option to get by without it. It's very well balanced in that respect in my opinion.

I have to be honest, beyond Morag and Nia, I hated the majority of Xenoblade 2's cast. Cast was,

- Anime kid with bad voice acting.
- Massive Boobs McGee.
- Creepy comedy character who is building a robot companion for dubious reasons.
- Stupid guy who strawberry floats up everything he touches.

I actually hated what they did with Nia as well.

I liked the game. But it's plot and characters are nowhere near the first one. Combat, area ideas and music are better though, and I'd be lying if I didn't say I put 80 hours into it in about a month. Because I did. It was like crack.
