You'd think Nintendo could afford servers to keep Mario 35 and Pac-man 99 up at the same time.

Nice idea for Pac-man though, good fit.

Shame that they couldn't keep Mario 35 alive, but Pac Man 99 looks like a lot of fun.
I expect they'll be a retail release including all the dlc and a years online pass like what they did with Tetris 99.

I think Stadia had some kind of large Pacman multiplayer game last year but yeh the 99 series is a Nintendo thing so exclusive.

Hello gamers I need some advice pretty please

Been getting annoyed at how sensitive the thumbsticks are on the joycons recently and want to get some thumbstick caps/covers/extensions/whatever you want to call them to sort it out as I read somewhere they help a lot. Has anyone here tried any and do they actually help? And are there any specific ones you'd recommend?

(also hello to any sonmers i am back for a little while to see how things are going)

It's Rik!

Never used any stick caps, on the chance it's stick drift that is your problem (i.e. inputs while in neutral) I'd recommend wd40 electrical contact cleaner.

It is! was feeling nostalgic for sonm so decided to check back in for a little bit and get some switch advice at the same time

p sure i don't have any stick drift, it's just that the sticks are tiny so it's hard to do any precise aiming or movement with them, eg. when I've played fortnite on it i had to turn the aim sensitivity right down to have it feel comparable to playing on mid-high sensitivity on ps4. also picked up stardew valley recently and it's hell trying to place any furniture/fences etc. because the cursor just zooms about all over the place at the slightest push.

You've played the Alwa games, haven't you? Am I going to lose a lot in playing Legacy (which sounds like my sort of thing) without having played Awakening (which does not)?

I have yeah. I like both, I prefer Awakening. I'm not convinced either would be your thing to be honest - Awakening is a very faithful NES-like, Legacy is a slightly-less-faithful SNES-like. I'd guess your tastes are more modern, I'm not sure what you are seeing that makes Legacy look more like your kind of thing? Both play very similarly as metroidvanias but I think Awakening has more of a design focus. You can absolutely play Legacy without playing Awakening though, it feels more like a remake or Zelda-style reimagining than a direct sequel.

Basically I'm a fan of Metroidvanias! Good ones I mean. Awakening looked more like a platformer with some slight MV-ish aspects - and, as you say, older. I can enjoy a more SNESish game if it's a good one, even though my tastes are indeed generally more modern: Yoshi’s Island, for example, or FFIV.

I've only played Awakening so can't comment on Legacy but I really enjoyed it. It's a short experience so it's not going to keep you busy for too long but as OR states it's a very faithful NES style metroidvania game.

I think I only paid about £2 for it so I went in expecting a budget indie experience and on that criteria it delivered very well!

You might prefer Legacy then, yeah, but I think both are as metroidvania-y as each other. From what I've read of Awakening's development they had some speedrunners playtest it who discovered several techniques and skips, but rather than fix them they left them in because they are fun to exploit. I discovered some myself when playing and it felt cool and rewarding. The sequel is similar, but it feels more intended which I think is because of them carrying over those exploits deliberately from the original and from the start. That made me feel a little less clever and the level design a little more... sterilised I guess?

The core magic-swapping mechanic is very NES-like and that obviously suits Awakening perfectly as a faithful NES-styled game. While it gets expanded on it then feels a little vestigal in Legacy - to me that made the "oldness" of the design actually slightly worse in Legacy, despite being the slightly more modern.

On all those points mileage is going to vary!
