I do think they need to expand the N64 list quickly - why no F-Zero X or Waverace 64 baffles me. Won't be upgrading until at least one of those appears. It's a shame it's got off to a rocky start but Nintendo only have themselves to blame with the large price hike.

Thanks for the advice about price, I think I’ll leave it a month or two to see if there’s any updates to the service. There might be a price drop or incentive to jump in before Xmas.

I'll get a subscription when there's a nice selection of games to play, which will help it feel like less of a rip off.

Or just use the new n64 controller on my pc :shifty:

I very much anticipate that more games will be added and that they'll act as a decent incentive, Miguel... although I suspect that the fires will freeze over before Nintendo ever drops the subscription pricing.

I got this Expansion pack last night basically the second it came out, only reason I did so is because like 5 people out of my family pack want to play the animal crossing dlc so it felt worth it for that, I tried the megadrive games and they worked perfectly, I have played a little bit of the N64 and I came into a few problems one you cant remap buttons and on starfox 64 this made the back trigger one side the tilt/roll button but the front trigger the other side the tilt roll which was weird, I did start playing Mario Kart and ended up doing a 100 speed cup and coming second, at times it felt like it wasn't responding quiet correctly to the controls but I figured hey my sticks are like from release maybe there a bit warn out but then having heard what others have said maybe it is lag...

I am starting to think Nintendo should have added GBA games not N64

Even with perfect emulation I think GBA ages better than N64 but that’s a taste thing I guess. Early polygonal games can be tough to go back to.

We’ll be getting this under the family sharing mainly so the 3 of us in this house can get the animal crossing DLC, the rest is a gooseberry fool bonus.

Really? I have to admit it was the one I was least impressed with!

Thought it looked too bright and washed out and the input lag was noticeable.

I actually thought Mario 64/Lylat/Yoshi's Story (always a genuine personal fave - his run and jump animation and feel are so crisp and quick!) ran fine in terms of responsivity and I usually think I'm quite sensitive to such stuff. Ocarina of time though feels sticky and the button press finishes way before the roll :(

Luckily for me I enjoy dissecting these things and am already downloading All-Star Collection again to compare Mario!

Genesis stuff plays well and has the useful reverse feature a la NES/SNES (N64 doesn't). Sonic 2 feels okay and certainly doesn't even have half the lag of the version in the Sega Ages Collection (or whichever it is I've got with the bedroom menu thing).

Ecco the dolphin still animates beautifully and the pissing about in open water at full speed is still gorgeous and fluid - then you get to the more finicky bits :(

I wouldn't be surprised to see F-Zero, Majora's Mask and the like not appearing until just over a year's time, when a chunk of people may consider letting their subscription lapse because Nintendo.

Surely the best version of Ocarina of Time is the 3DS remake? It improved everything about the game

I think this Reddit comment sums up some people's disappointment quite well

You know what's funny? The games work perfect emulated on a switch with custom firmware via homebrew (specifically mupen64plus in Retroarch). Not only that, it has less input lag and can render in higher resolutions (720p if you overclock, otherwise stick to 240p or 480p) and true wide-screen.

Nintendo have full access to all the inner workings of the N64, the switch and their games, and a homebrew app on the switch developed by hobbyists has them beat.

Let's not even go into the Mario 64 homebrew port to the switch which runs in 60fps wide-screen with full analog camera control, zero input lag, and better poly models and rendering distances.

I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan, ever since I got a Game Boy in 1994. But I am not spending a penny on any re-releases that play worse than alternatives in FPGA and free emulation.

I bought an N64 switch controller from Club Nintendo UK and it works out of the box with my PC (directinput natively) and plays nicely with Retroarch. That's the extent of what I'll be paying towards this latest endeavour as it's quite frankly an insult

100%.

Majora's Mask is more debatable because the 3DS version had some divisive changes.

I'd rather play the N64 original than the 3DS port... but not with Switch Online's emulation by the sounds of it.

Majora’s Mask I would also opt for the 3DS version but I only played the N64 version briefly so the changes had less of an impact on me really

I take it back, the input lag even on SM64 is worse than in 3D All-Stars. It's definitely playable but there's enough of a wedge between press and jump that it all feels like you're steering Mario a little, instead of just being him.

Oh well!

I'm still quite happy to have all the games in easy access, and in general really like the App's responsivity and lack of fuss, and easy ability to save/load states - as per prev. SNES/NES ones. So I may be a sucker but I'm still overall happy to pay and have this library to hand.

But it still feels lazy and annoyingly off. Give me Kokiri fog man! The low-res Deku tree is just starkly visible above the Kokiri horizon and it looks so weird!

I see this has brought out the equivalent of the JUST BUY A RASPBERRY PI AND PLAY ROMS!!!1111 crew.

Ok so, Huh, the n64 mode isn't that great then? Well I'll just play it on my vintage tube based crt running from a waterwheel powered generator, and my prototype n64 system hand built by Shigsy himself, with a developer board ocarina of time game, with the sound turned down but with the original voice actors talking over it.

Yeah I find it pretty annoying when people bang on about some pretty expensive and luxury emulation solutions least of all ignoring the fact it's not strictly legal either. If you want a Nintendo release of a game on switch without strawberry floating about with it, that's what you want. It's even funnier when they're boasting about owning A REAL N64 AND GENESIS THANK GOD I BOUGHT THOSE FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS, conveniently omitting the fact they regret getting rid of the console and all their carts in the first place, which is obviously the best way to play these games.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

I had no interest in this myself anyway (I've already got my expensive and luxury solutions  ), but from everything we're seeing it's just another example of Nintendo's "strawberry float it, they'll pay anyway" attitude.

Bare minimum efforts, as per usual which is even more apparent when the homebrew equivalents are doing a better job of representing these games.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be annoyed by that. This should never have been released in the state that it's in.

strawberry float Nintendo.

I don't think people are being elitist - at least on here, I don't care about Twitter - I think they're disappointed that the version on Switch has a load of prominent issues. Despite the price being a bit steep I was actually looking forward to booting up a few N64 games, but if they look and play worse than they should then that's sapped my enthusiasm.

I genuinely don't understand in that context why it would be annoying or unreasonable to point out that hobbyist emulators are doing a better job. The point isn't "go and pirate the games" it's "why can't a big company do a good job if internet randos have already solved it (and even published how they did it)?".
