Yeah they were technically well done, good value and provided a pretty decent selection of games as well.

There really isn't any excuse for getting it so wrong now

Honestly I think they just don't really care about emulation or see it as that big a money spinner anymore outside of those mini consoles that are popular with an older audience who don't have a current gaming set up.

The Virtual Console launched with the Wii, took six months to arrive on the Wii U, and it took a year and a half for its successor to come to the Switch. It's clearly much less of a priority than it used to be so they're not going to do things like make each N64 game run its own emulator, even though they could and should when they're charging such a premium for it.

Surely gamers are always relevant when discussing video games?

I really don't see what point you're making

Not really making one

I think it's definitely fair to say they don't care about it. But at the same time it's still depressing how bad this latest effort is. Everyone says "they're doing the minimum amount of work" but this feels like somehow even less than that!

That was a cool feature. I gifted Tomena Sanner to my parents via Wii messaging and they didn't know what it was... until all the family spent several hours playing and laughing about it one Christmas  .

I suppose Virtual Console was positioned as an important part of the Wii system from its proper reveal, and so Nintendo put more resources into that.

Now, it really isn't, it's a cool little ad-on to paid online play which used to be free, and yeah they're gutting resources that perhaps were never there this generation around. It's sad, but we have had the fairly good micro consoles, it's a shame they couldn't or didn't perfect N64 emulation and farmed it out to Europe (NERD) but then maybe even Nintendo think there is less demand for this than we do.

Guys please don't judge me too hard, but I think I like Yoshi's Story more than Island.

I like the thudthud of his run in Story, and the awesome arch-back quick feet of his animation. I love how powerful and prolonged his flutter jump is. I really dig the Yoshi's colour schemes and the way they wear oversized sneakers and look sort-of hip-hop. I like the strenuous child-voice Hmmmmpphh as he flutters.

I also like the kind of Donkey Kong Country 3D-made-2D-sprite look and the rich colour palette.

I especially like the strange 30-fruit collection criteria to finish a level, so that it becomes much more exploratory in nature, with you circling back and around levels to try and get the fruit you fancy (and with that satisfying gulp animation and sound!). But I also like how this feels like a fairly loose system that I'm happy to drop when I fancy just moving on, whereas in Island I found the amount of scored collectables (red coins and hearts and whatever else) always gave me that perfectionist completionist nag during levels which could make them feel a bit more like Capital U Undertakings and not something light and carefree to just jump into.

Anyway I like it! Though I do have some nostalgia at play as I owned it on 64. But I always liked it!

While the game had a mixed reception and was perhaps a little underwhelming given the N64's slightly weird 2D capabilities (low texture memory even in low or no poly scenes, they're technically planes? Which are still polygons I guess) you've basically described why it's a good, different sort of Yoshi game, especially the relative non-linearity. I can't quite describe it as comprehensively but it sort of feels more like a game about just Yoshi (as there's no baby mario) quite literally being a cute little dinosaur and wandering around these environments. It's not a challenging game unless you try every jump to reach every collectible, and it lacks the pixel perfect, pastel representation of Yoshi Island's sharp graphics, but, it's still a good game and I've noticed it's a little more coveted over the years. I also have had it when I was around 12 I think, I swapped some other games for it and I think Donkey Kong 64, which is an overcomplicated, bloated, average Banjo Kazooie clone I could never be arsed to finish.

I remember we rented Yoshi's Story from blockbuster, I don't remember being hugely taken with it but also we never had a chance to get very far in it to be fair.

The other N64 rental I vividly remember was Pokemon Snap, which I think on much more fondly but that's probably because it was short enough for a rental to work!

We rented a couple of games we definitely should have bought!

Including Pokemon Snap, and Conker's BFD.

I borrowed MGS3 Subsistence from a friend and never returned it as we fell out of touch shortly afterwards, but I'm pretty sure I lost my copy of Advance Wars: Dark Conflict for similar reasons. Otherwise I've always returned and had returned all other lendings - which I wish I hadn't when it came to a promo disc copy of Jak and Daxter

I lent about 15 multiplayer gamecube disks to someone at uni and took about 3 years to ask for them back. Thank strawberry float they were returned before everyone graduated.

I'm pretty sure someone nicked a copy of MGS Twin Snakes and I've had some other games vaporise (including MGS for the GameBoy colour.. what is it about MGS games).

I once had someone take a photo of themselves holding my copy of Twin Snakes because I declined to lend it to them, he was a rabid fan. That was weird. I also starred in a film he made. True story.

You were in a film with a guy who took a photo holding your snake? Oh no, where exactly is this video so I can avoid it, exactly which sites.

I lent my golden Majora's Mask cartridge to a 'friend' and never saw it again. Hurts to this day .
