Presumably the N64 emulator for wii that was actually good was handled by Japan team but as that was SD would have no support for upscaling or HD resolution. They commissioned the European team and the emulator is obviously missing some hardware features or the ROM has been modified.

PlayStation: you can play other people's games by streaming their console to yours at no additional cost

Microsoft: You can play all of our new games at launch for £8 a month

Nintendo: give us more money so you can play some 25 year old games.

I don't know if every user is experiencing this kind of performance... but it's just so poor. I'm amazed that Nintendo is presenting this as a good way to play the game; and charging a premium for it.

Oh dear :(

I thought I'd have a hard job resisting this despite the price, but it's a no brainer.

EDIT: IF this is down to people deliberately nadgering their routers to give a poor impression then that's very annoying.

I read (and soz but I forgot which site now) that the netcode incorporated into the games is using a type where it advances each online player's game frame-by-frame in sequence. On paper it should mean that the game progresses at the same speed for each player but it appears that, in the real world, it's causing the stuttering and slowdown that we're seeing.

It sounds a little hyperbolic but some of these clips indicate that the games are unplayable in that state; the stuttering and sound is just so invasive to the experience.

Good shout, Lime. Right now it's pretty hard to build an overall impression; plenty of folk are slaughtering the performance whilst others are saying it's okay.

There could be value in sitting back, giving it a couple of days and then seeing what folk like Digital Foundry are saying about it.

People did do that on Twitter for Sonic Colours on switch... Playing it on an emulator. Ironic..

I've heard the netcode on the NES and SNES multiplayer is a lot better (rollback) than the netcode on the N64 emulator (delay). I don't doubt it's easier to get good netcode working on a SNES emulator than on a more complex N64 emulator, but Nintendo aren't a small indie company...

Kek. This is shocking. I've heard (so it may not be true) that they're straight up using the same Ocarina of Time rom that's been easily accessible online for years. It's sad though that the emulator they built is so inferior to existing ones out there (even their own on the wii).

Hardcore Nintendo fans are the absolute worst

Some guy on Reddit trying to tell me this expansion pass isn't anti consumer because I have the 'option' of not buying it

Imagine Netflix forcing people to buy a 12 month subscription and it being spun as not anti consumer

By this logic anti consumer is only when a company literally forces you to buy something

The thing is, the Switch doesn't come with an ethernet port (unless it's the OLED model), so I fully suspect these are legit issues with people playing on WiFi. I play Smash with my friends who are all wired and still occasionally get gooseberry fool connections.

And that doesn't explain the things like missing textures, objects just not loading properly, or Time Trial ghosts being unavailable on MK because you can't slot in an expansion pack into the controller and they never accounted for it.

It's a gigabotch and I can't believe my friend is still trying to get us to buy it.

Exactly

Anti consumer basically = lack of options, and only catering to one demographic

Which is exactly what this expansion pass does.

If I only want to play Mario Kart 64 online for one weekend I have to buy a pass for an entire year.

It's dumb.

You can get a ~£5 USB dongle to give the Switch an ethernet port by the way, not that I imagine it will solve all of these problems or is a way to excuse how terrible Nintendo's netcode is!

Can I, as someone who does not own Animal Crossing, buy the expansion pass on its own without DLC for a game I do not own being bundled in? Because if that's bumping the price up Ninty can strawberry float off on that front, too.

Yeah, it's nuts. If you want the DLC is good value if you don't it's terrible value.

Has any GRcadian purchased the Expansion Pack yet? It'd be good to hear a viewpoint from someone who has used it rather than just relying on the "worst scenario" stories that we've seen today.

My friend I share a sub with is still trying to get the guy in charge to upgrade and is willing to pay for it all, so I might get it by tonight, we'll see.
