Me, in 2017, from the General Retro thread:

Although I don't keep up with Wii U prices so I could've been talking bollocks.

Yeah, I don't look at retro game prices any more but, in my mind, Sonic Boom and Walking Dead Survival Instinct are now worth at least £99 each 8-) .

Reference the graphic, don't forget the Wii/DS expanded the gaming market during their lifetime. So for a measure oh how appreciated the GC was, you ought to compare backwards, not forwards.

Only came in to say I got a switch this winter because the AC limited edition one came back in stock.

Pretty sure Boom cost me less than 9 pounds.

You bought wisely, Pedz - they're selling for between 12 and 20 quid on eBay.

I wonder if you and I are the only GRcadians to own a copy of this game?

Maybe, though I bet there's someone one here who secrets loves the game.

As I have said, it's better than 06, but due to 06 being so shoddy 06 is more entertaining, just for the wrong reasons.

This is legit incredible. The UK has often been one of Nintendo's weaker markets and to think that the Switch ran out in front last year, even when the PS4 has been so dominant and new consoles were launched, really is quite something.

I think "Nintendo don't do as well in the UK" while true often gets exaggerated and/or hasn't been as true as it once was for some while. The Switch has been very popular as was the Wii, and Nintendo have always dominated the handheld market. While the WiiU sold poorly it did so everywhere.

Nintendo isn't the non-entity that Xbox appears to be in Japan for example, although I'm wary that this is the same exaggeration applied to me looking at a different country!

All those sales despite having an awful online store, poor quality hardware and a load of gooseberry fool Wii u games. Wow.

I know it's amazing the PS4 managed to sell so well!

Not sure what you mean about the Wii U ports though.

As in you're not sure what a Wii U is?

I think that was the problem the general public had with the U

Dual  .

It is funny how just small variances can be the difference between success and failure, though. I really like the Switch but, as an owner of previous Nintendo consoles, it does feel very bare-bones in some ways. The UI is quick but very dull; there are no Nintendo-like apps (fun channels as existed for Wii, 3DS and U), and you can't even message your "best friends", let alone anyone else. The eShop sales pages are ridiculously slow to navigate. Nearly four years in and we still can't get beyond black or white as a "theme" or setup folders, either. I'd also argue that Nintendo's own output has maybe been less impressive for the Switch then it was for the U.

But... but. The portability and key "switch" feature really is great. The operating system software runs quick. It does all the core essentials effectively. The range of indie games is excellent and it is great to see some big - albeit older - third-party games on Switch such as Bioshock, Skyrim and Dark Souls.

I am pretty surprised at the success of the Switch after the sales failure of the U but, for me, it goes back to those small margins of difference. It was clear from the off that the Switch was a console that could be played in portable or TV modes (and at rooftop parties) and perhaps that clarity was the key factor.

But then Nintendo launched Switch Lite and got rid of that clarity :fp: ;) .

For me the success of the Switch is a no-brainer. From the very first reveal it was obvious that what they had put together was a hugely appealing form factor and they communicated the strengths of the system incredibly well right out of the gate.

I don't even think that's an arguement

This is related though. The reason it is so quick is because it is so dull. They have prioritised being able to dip in and out over anything else.

Of course they are missing basic functionality that can't really be defended, but I the UI works well for its primary purpose.

Really? Switch has Mario Odyssey which on its own basically makes it better than the output for most other Nintendo machines by default!

Yeah I love the UI. It's quick, shows me the things I want to play and doesn't get in my way when playing. I wish the same could be said for all gaming UI's!

I appreciate that there are features which others are desperate for but nothing that is missing really impacts me personally

I've noticed the shop has really slowed down since they added the very minimal Mario anniversary branding.

It is baffling that replacing loading_spinner.gif with mario_running.gif has slowed it down but here we are

The difference between the WiiU and Switch and why the latter has been a success seems night-and-day though!
