I personally don’t mind the approach of adding new modes and such post launch over time but Switch Sports being so bare in single player modes was a bit shite

Mario Tennis Aces is great these days so there’s hope.

Went back to this the other day, although now my Online Pass has lapsed, so I could only play the "trial" version of the online mode to unlock two random items (a hat, and some bubbles(?!)). Has anyone tried playing it online in local co-op? I noticed that the second player doesn't have access to any of the customisation items I've unlocked, but do they still get to unlock their own things as they earn points for matches? (Do you earn fewer points for playing in co-op, or does it still give you the standard 30 participation points?)

Just in case anyone's interested, we picked up a family sub the other day to give the online a bash, and you *do* both get the usual 30 participation points + whatever multiplier bonuses you get for winning/streaks/etc (assuming you're both signed in to the accounts connected to the family sub. Saw a few posts on reddit with people saying that they had to play on the primary console for both players to get progression points, but we've got a cartridge version so I can't check that very well). Started off with a game of bowling and was pleasantly surprised we both managed to do pretty well (finished the 10 rounds in first and second place), then did a game of tennis in which we obliterated the opposition, and then we went back to bowling and played two games against eight people who got three strikes in a row in the first round.

So... does it give you a few games against AI opponents to lull you into a false sense of security, or what? (in our games of bowling against obvious actual people were three who'd unlocked the full stupid football man costume, whereas the opening game seemed to be made up of characters that hadn't unlocked anything new. The first bowling game had a 90 second time limit, while the second had a 15 second limit, which also suggests that there weren't any real people in that first game outside the two of us...) :slol: We played another game of tennis a little later against two obviously real people, and that was a little closer and a bit more fun, so much like any online game, it seems incredibly hit and miss. Bowling's going to be absolute shite if it always throws you in with people who bowl perfect games every time, though.

That first game of bowling was so lucrative, too. Got over 100 points from that one round! :toot: If only it could give me games like that consistently.

EDIT: Every round of bowling we've played so far has also had one or two players who are literally not playing and just waiting the 15 second timer out every round to presumably grind out "thanks for playing!" points to unlock clothing, too. Stellar idea that was of Nintendo's

Had an email survey off Nintendo asking for feedback on Switch Sports... Made my feelings on them locking the customisation options behind the online very clear :shifty:

Found a "fix" for all the customisation being locked to the stupid online mode :slol: With a jailbroken Switch you can overwrite your own Switch Sports save data with someone else's. Turns out I'm not the only person online who wants the ability to customise my character without having to play with randos, so someone's uploaded a save file, and they seemingly update it every few weeks with the new unlocks. Just add it to your profile, change the name/avatar, and you're good to go!

Only jailbroke it for the ability to install my catalogue of game cards, but that's a pretty nice bonus.

Might be something for the main Switch thread, but could you post a summary of the advantages of jailbreaking and a "how to" guide (or a link?)?

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

So... I now have Switch Sports!

I was apprehensive about getting it; I've played Wii Sports Resort (bowling, table tennis and archery) for hundreds of hours over the years and I wondered if this version was a little Wii Sports Lite.

First impressions (I've only played bowling so far):

- Character setup is weak; very few options when you're starting out..
+ ...but then I noticed that you can use your Mii appearance instead :toot:
- Very basic presentation; it does the job and, to be fair, previous versions were basic, too
+ Bowling seems... fine. It is a little different to Wii Sports Resort and the spin control seems okay once you get used to it...
- ...but it also seems easier than before; I've just hit a 238 on my second go
- The audio mix is poor with no ability to alter it; I can barely hear the voices over the background sound
- No stats in offline mode?!? What the actual?!? I think it keeps a record of your personal best but you can't see it pre-match? No rookie/pro charts? This is a big step back from previous versions
+ ...but you do get online stats, I think? I bloomin' hope so!
+ I like how you can earn different clothing and ball designs; this is a nice touch

So, a mixed bag right now. I'm looking forward to playing more, though.

In the best traditions of GRcade, I've gone bowling. Again.

+ I was wrong; the personal best score is shown pre-play in offline mode.
- But that's it for offline play, it seems. No graphs recording performance/ranking as with Resort.
+ I ventured online; but, as I don't sub to Nintendo Online right now, I couldn't... but the game did offer a "trial mode" which I think gave an online experience but with bots. So I tried that and it was some kinda "knockout" game; you stay on if you're in the top few scoring positions..
+ The online/trial play seemed okay... not too sure why I couldn't play a standard game, but it was fun and I'd like to try it again.
- I dunno why the offline mode is so weak. Will it be the same with the other sports, I wonder?

I'm getting into the feel of the bowling. It seems to be a bit easier than older versions, but I like it. I'll be playing more bowling and... I think I'll try badminton next!

It's not just when you're starting out, pretty much *every* customisation option is only unlockable through public online play. Goes from being a must-buy to a may-as-well-swerve. Absolutely idiotic. £40 for the game but you can't get glasses for your character unless you also pay for the online sub

So it ruins it for offline players, and ruins it for online players since a lot of matches end up with a couple of players who are just farming for that little bit of XP to unlock a random hat, just sitting there waiting for the round timer to run out.

Oh, man - I haven't got Switch Online at the moment and so I haven't tried the online play yet; I hope there aren't any time-wasters like that!

Wii Sports was a free game that came bundled literally with every Wii. It was teeming with stats, scores, progress incentives, 3 modes for each sport, AI with difficulty curves, etc.

Switch Sports is not free. Switch Online is not free. It has virtually no single player content. The games themselves are great fun, and it is very clearly geared purely toward a multiplayer experience. But then that multiplayer experience lacks all the finesse of its predecessors, 16 years before it. You can earn a few customisation options by achieving certain high scores in each respective sport, but as Jawa said, no rookie/pro progression, just bare bones.

It's such a shame as it has a lot of potential that will never be utilised.
