Played a couple of games last night (bowling, tennis and badminton), and it's pretty fun. For some reason I thought they might have evolved the racket sports so you could actually move your characters, rather than them always automatically getting themselves to where the targets about to drop. With the joycons having sticks now it probably would have been a possibility. Our badminton rallies kept going for AGES since all you really have to do is get the timing right

Did a lot better in Switch Bowling than I did in real-life bowling last weekend, too  Maybe I should just stick to the games.

What's actually the deal with the customisation stuff, then? Is it genuinely all locked behind having to play the online side of things? :dread: Making your first character and so many of the menus are just "you don't have any of these items yet!". Couldn't they give you a generic hat and a pair of glasses, for strawberry float's sake? Ridiculous.

The Mii heads on the more-realistic character bodies are so unsettling, too. Nightmare fuel.

I think the Miis look fine. The customisation stuff is locked behind online, but you can level up and get an item from playing like 3 games of anything so it really doesn't take long to unlock the ones you want from the different gacha things at least.

Nah, it's a casual sport game, why on earth can I not earn "points" playing it against someone in the same room? Genuinely properly disappointed by that. You can apparently earn items on the "trial" mode, but you're limited to two a week? Completely nonsensical. Hope they'd get slated for that.

I would only play this locally so the customisation being locked behind online is really off-putting

Have so far found a single review that even mentions that it's all locked behind the online, everyone else simply says about how much choice there is! Proper shitty decision. I've got an online pass, but why on earth should I *have* to go and play against randos (from what I can read you don't earn points from friend lobbies?) to unlock the ability to give my character glasses or a haircut that doesn't make me look like a twelve year old schoolboy?

It's not a free-to-play game  Nothing should be *locked* behind an online mode.

You'd think there'd have been more hubbub about the fact that a £30/£40 game wants you to then pay a £15-a-year subscription to be able to unlock anything.

I completely agree. No reason why single player progression should not count as progress.

But I just hate multiplayer games for the most part, so not exactly impartial on this.

Yeah, none of the reviewers were able to test the online aspects for the bulk of their review time; it looks like some just made quick updates to their review once it became available.

I can't believe I haven't caved for this; to me, though, it never quite felt like Nintendo was really polishing the game for launch. Reading some of the more positive thoughts here has made me think about it again, but I won't get it at the moment.

I just watched this and I think it kinda highlights a couple of aspects I was unsure about. The joy-con may well be technically better than the Wii Remote but this isn't really translating to more satisfying control in Sports; some of this is due to the physical form factor and possibly the coding. Bowling being described as easier and a bit less satisfying is a bit of a blow.

The "bare bones" feeling was mentioned, too. Sure, the original Wii Sports was pretty light but that was 16 years ago and it was free with the console. Resort offered twelve sports and more engaging single-player gameplay. And whilst this is perhaps a little more subjective, the vid suggested that the new character stylings just don't have the charm of creating your own Mii. Okay, you can use the head of a Mii, but... yeah.

I'm torn. I'd like to try this but, really, Digital Foundry's assessment just confirms what I felt I already know - that I'm not gonna rate it as highly as Sports Resort. I don't and won't dump on the game - I've not actually played it! - but I just feel disappointed as I loved the Wii games so much!

Check in with the game in 8-12 months and hopefully they’ve updated this enough that it’s a more appealing package. I like what’s there already but it’s only something I would play locally with others right now, single player is basically just play online.

I wish I was finding bowling easier  people online getting strikes all the strawberry floating time is a pain in the arse.

Yeah, you're right, Milner. I'm just gonna forget about it and then see how much development it gets over the coming months. Cheers, dude.

Have to say, I've found it very easy. The fact the default starting position is perfect to roll your wrist to the left as you release and nail a strike every time is a bit of a giveaway.

I've enjoyed the game so far but only been doing couch multiplayer with kid and wife.

I am getting tired of Nintendo releasing the bare bones of games and updating them at later dates. It would be fine if Nintendo had equipped the Switch with a moderately size hard drive, but they didn't. I can understand third-parties shipping carts with downloads required but since Nintendo made the machine it's seems completely incongruous.

I do agree, Drum, and I feel that it's pretty often the case that publishers now release games knowing full well that they're not "finished" and that further content and fixes will be required. Consumers have become conditioned to accept this as being "normal" and so it's barely even noted.

Specifically for Nintendo, I'm disappointed by this approach to their sports games such as Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf Super Rush and now Switch Sports. I *like* the idea of updates and improvements, but not when the games are released as pretty sparse frames at launch. I'm really hoping that the same fate doesn't befall Mario Strikers.

I have read on Reddit that later pressings of carts do sometimes include content released post-release, so there's some hope there.
