I'm sure I read that - despite the multitude of tech in the joy-con - movement tracking was perhaps not as sharp as the Remotes. I could be (and hope I am!) wrong, though. I'm just so pleased to see Sports return as I enjoyed it so much before.

The sensing tech is more advanced than motion+

I'm not totally convinced TBH, Victor! Looking online there are a multitude of viewpoints but nothing seems to be that conclusive. On paper I think many would say the tech specs are better for the joy-con, but in games... I guess we'll find out once Sports arrives!

The main difference is the lack of a sensor bar located pointer, which is greatly missed I think. It gives a constant reference point without the need to endlessly press a recalibrate button.

And wii motion+ games sometimes didn't use that anyway - Skyward Sword used gyro aiming rather than the IR pointer which meant you had to keep pressing recalibrate still

I think the motion tracking will be at least as reliable as the original Wii Sports, which given the simplicity of the games on offer was more than good enough. It's only when they tried to extend motion to more complex scenarios that it all started to get a bit wonky.

I can't recall having anywhere near as many motion related issues with Switch games as I did with the Wii so I'm confident this will work!

The motion controls were - IMHO - just "okay" on the original Wii Sports whilst the Motion Plus-powered Wii Sports Resort offered much better accuracy; especially on bowling and table tennis. I know this point isn't gonna get a good reception from Switch fans, but I've recently watched a number of vids comparing motion control between the Remotes and joy-con and it's at best inconclusive. The movement monitoring *is* technically better in the joy-con but that doesn't necessarily translate to a better gameplay experience and, for the most part, this appears to be due to the lack of a "centre position" tracking capability with the joy-con i.e. no sensor bar. The joy-con are great at indicating how far they've been moved and at what speed but they aren't so hot at reverting to a centre point.

I do, of course, want the joy-con experience to be terrific with Switch Sports and I'm hoping it will be... but at this time I'm a little apprehensive.

Interesting - I'm the exact opposite. Motion Plus on Resort was awful in my experience - attempting to do things that the tech just wasn't capable of and resulting in frustration.

Games like Tennis/Golf/Bowling from the original don't really need the sensor bar for calibration, it's just about picking up on a swing in various ways which the accelerometers are excellent at doing, that's why I'm pretty confident in how well this set of games will work on Switch... but you never know!

If it's coming out after launch, surely it's a lag strap.

Nintendo Life has previewed the game... and their "highs and lows" headlines seems to be a good summarisation.

I played Wii Sports Resort at a family do last night and I was reminded at just how good it is. I think that I like it so much that it'd be hard for a new game to match it and, right now, I'm feeling that this probably won't. I feel a bit negative saying that but previews are starting to back-up my concerns; predominately that although the joy-con have seemingly more impressive tech than the Wii Remotes, in actual gameplay the lack of a sensor bar to aid position tracking is proving to be a drawback. This should be a "day one" for me but I'm thinking more and more that I'll be holding off until a range of reviews are out.

I want this to be great.

Don't see anything in that NIntendo Life preview about comparisons to wii motion plus - have you read that in a different preview? I don't think any of those previewed sports use a pointer.

Exactly!

It's only my assumption of course, but the lack of pointer movement could be because it's hard to track movement of the joy-con. I know that my perhaps "hot" take on the joy-con isn't popular, but the recent House of the Dead suffered* with tracking issues and I wonder if that's a reason for the "auto movement" of the characters in Sports. Yeah, auto movement also featured in some of the sports on Wii, so maybe I'm being harsh... but, then again, the support for the Nunchuk in sports such as archery enabled dual movement methods on the Wii.

Plenty of previews are popping up this afternoon and they often have good things to say. I think it's a tough one for me as I've put hundreds of hours into Resort - mainly bowling and table tennis - and I kinda want things to stay-the-same-but-be-improved... a really difficult situation. Believe me, I want this Switch version to be great fun!

So it's a drawback in the sense that there deliberately aren't sports included that you would want to use a pointer with (e.g. archery), not that any of the included sports control any worse than they did on the wii.

I don't think auto-movement has anything to do with the lack of a pointer, as you say that was how it worked on wii anyway. I think that's a simplicity/accessibility thing, not a technical thing.

So I have 1 x left and 1 x right official joycons and 1 x left and 1 x right cheap joycons; which are fine for mario kart etc but I don't think they have motion sensors etc so won't work for this.

I'm hoping, for say the racket sports; in 2 player one person can use the official right and the other the official left joycon. By my logic it should work like that, right? Don't particularly want to splash out another set of proper joycons.

Thinking about getting this with my second ticket. Kinda looking forward to going online with this, but can't wait for Golf.

Good thing is any DLC should end up in the Expansion pass :toot:

This guy got the game delivered early.

It looks kinda good... I think... but it'll be all about the feel of the game(s). I'd like to get this but I'm gonna try and force myself to wait for reviews. I think the issue is that I personally hold Wii Sports Resort at such a high level that I may be overly critical of this version. We'll see!

It is definitely a step back after Resort, but hopefully it does well enough (and the outcry for Wuhu Island's return is great enough) that we get a second Switch game that can surpass Resort.

The better graphics and not-quite-miis make it look weirdly like a 360 Kinect game
