It's 2019... and the U has come to my rescue! I think it's gonna be able to run Netflix on my TV :toot: .

Bad news jawa. While it works the was a horrendous bug introduced last year where over time it will take about 15 seconds to respond to the buttons, depending on how long the video has been running. It also hard locks occasionally. Still, it's better than nothing.

I suspect you could be right, Abacus. The hardware itself will become hard to find (in a decent condition, anyway) and Gamepads, especially, could become sought after. Even things like the power supplies will be hard to track down.

The mixture of having a famous manufacturer and yet being a "failure" with a short life could make it popular for collectors in the future. The light blue game cases just look cool, too :-) .

I love your description  . It is undoubtedly clunky in some ways but innovative in other aspects. The "TV and portable play" aspect works, for me, in exactly the same fashion as the Switch as I only play at home rather than out-and-about.

Possibly, however, as updates need to come from the web, and the game pad relies on batteries it is mostly likely in a few years they will be next to usable as the batteries die and the store gets axed preventing patches to be downloaded.

Older consoles keep going as mostly they are solid state and don’t require any external systems.

Alas, Errkal, I believe you are right. I've embraced digital downloading but it does seem that nowdays we're buying games for a "rental" period of a few years rather than forever.

I've not fired mine up for quite a while, but it did have probably the best retro game store I've ever seen, including Turbograffix games etc. Might just back all these up to a hard drive

Been years since I used my Wii U but I am considering taking it out and setting it up as I want to play Twilight Princess HD and Nintendo are taking their sweet ass time releasing it on Switch.

Question though, do I need to use the Wii U Gamepad for anything? Can I just load and play the game using the Pro controller?

I've only ever booted it up once to potter about, but as I understand it it'll be just like Wind Waker HD, i.e. it just works as a map and quick inventory, but you can just press '-' on the Pro controller to access the same menu without it.

Great, and I can navigate the main Wii U system using the Pro controller as well can’t I?

You surely can. Though the gamepad will still turn on anyway if it's charged, you don't need to use it at all.

I've got my Wii U out of the loft as I've got a few unfinished/unplayed games that I really should play.

First up I'm going to go back and finish:

1. Paper mario colour splash
2. Pikmin 3

Then I'm going to start:

1. The wunderful 101

Also, the strawberry floating state of the gamepad :dread: :dread:

It's a dinner tray.

The Wonderful 101 is amazing despite being flawed. Everyone needs to experience that ending. Hope you like it!

My U has remained connected to my living room TV since it launched in 2012. The Wii is still there, too! Enjoy your gaming, Ad!

I've had it digitally (context) for years now as there was a price cockup on the official shop meaning it was £8 For a couple of hours. Looking forward to giving it a go after all this time.

My Mrs asked if I was going to sell it once I'm done with these, and that sounds like a good plan but it's also a HDMI wii, and every now and again I feel like a bit of Wii sports or something.

I would honestly rather play on the gamepad for 10 hours than the Switch for 1. It's so much more comfortable. It looks a bit like a child's toy, but it's really great.

I get awful handcramp and pins and needles when using the switch handheld for too long. The Wii U gamepad isnt great from a looks perspective but it is very comfy to use. Mine is still hooked up under the TV as well, I cant bring myself to put it away.

I tell you what, the menu is a lot more interesting and this feels a hell of a lot more Nintendo than the switch does.

Defo start off with Pikmin 3 first Ad, it’s the best of the trilogy imo and a great game all round.

I was thinking of getting mine out recently but just haven’t had the time.
