I'm surprised at how well the U works with my new screen. It's great having a bigger view and it looks so vibrant!

Does this mean you have finally moved up for 720p?

Yeah, my new screen is a 43" 4K HDR set and I'm hugely enjoying the improvements that it offers over my old TV :-).

I spent a little time yesterday afternoon just loading up U games and seeing how they look on the new screen. Considering the U is outputting a 720p image, my TV is doing a terrific job of expanding that to 4K; it looks so sharp and vibrant. Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventure looked so colourful and fun!

I have barely played on my U in the past few years and, with the new bigger screen, it feels like I've got a new console, too :-).

Wii U does full 1080p jawa, although I think maybe for some reason the main UI is 720p. Have you had a look in the settings?

The TV should automatically switch resolutions between games that support 720p or 1080p, the console initiates the switch and the TV follows.

A game like Splatoon really shows off the full gamut of a good quality HDMI signal/display, I always loved how colourful that game looked when I got a hand me down 37" Samsung that happens to be excellent for games!

Thanks for the heads-up, Gecko! I just checked and, yeah, it seems that these games - and possibly one or two others - can run at 1080p:

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
Rayman Legends
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

I have these titles and will give 'em a go tomorrow night. I bet they're gonna look great!

Yeah I'm sure there's plenty of 1080p games to enjoy, and Smash is all the more surprising considering how much is going on and it's 60fps (at least I think it is? Surely it is, that's half the appeal of Smash since the N64). To be honest though I have quite a few of the "AAA" Wii U titles and I never particularly notice.

I only completed Wind Waker HD in the past few months, it's delightful to revisit with the fixed Triforce quest (wasn't nearly as trudging as originally) and the fast / automatic rotating sale amongst many other small refinements.

I tried loading the GC ROM in Dolphin on an old machine I have under the telly (in a nice theatre case) and it ran at like 7fps so I am grateful for the port, which I believe only set me back about £14 anyway and I happened to find a copy with the reversible limited edition cover (I think the one that came with the Wind Waker HD bundle and/or Ganondorf figurine).

GG remember the Wii U can run nintendont so GameCube games are possible on that if you wanted (I played so shine this way a few years back).

Is there any possibility of online gooseberry fool being locked out if you do that? Still fancy playing MK and Smash from time to time.

There are few nicer feelings than falling back in love with an abandoned console or handheld system. Everything feels new again

I was running it on the vWii side, so I don't think so.

True, man. I just want to load everything up and "ooh!" and '"aah!" at the graphics. So clear, much vibrant!

That's how it starts, with ooo and ahh, but later on there's charging, and porting.

And the Wii U gamepad battery lasting about 10 minutes... And running flat every time you don't use it for a while, exactly like the Wii Remotes used to do. Interestingly, the Wii U Pro controller seldom does this, as it seems to have some kind of magical giant battery wrapped inside a black hole... or it's just better engineered to no waste energy for no reason. I think I've charged that controller, literally once since I first bought it.

That said, I cycle the DualShock 4 about once every 2-3 days so none of them are particularly good at this.

It's 100x better than strawberry floating wires trailing across the room though. You're only doing that about 5% of the time (or 100% of the time in the case of the useless original Wii U Gamepad battery; I wish I upgraded it when they were still readily available. Not as bad as the £1.50 official GameCube RGB Scart I skipped at Dixons though :slol:).

Is it just me who gets awful screen tearing on the gamepad? I've tried moving my router to the opposite end of the room to minimise interference, but it's still virtually unplayable. :|

Dang, sorry to hear that you've experienced technical issues, Choc! I haven't had them myself. Has the issue only cropped up recently? Maybe you've moved the U console itself, or set up some other kit next to it? This website explains how setup can impact the signal.

Hope you can swiftly sort it out, dude.
