I was kinda hopeful for it when it became a free, a little commute and read up on some new music to checkout. Turns out it was a magazine purely aimed at teenagers who probably get all their music through online outlets. It never really found a market.

Dang, its a sad situation for magazines and papers. As I said about gaming mags recently, journalism has been hugely devalued in most people's eyes; they won't pay for it and younger folk are growing up thinking that reporting should be free.

It got worse when they made it free, well at least according to my brother. Basically they dropped any coverage about unsigned, small label stuff and just concentrated on the biggest artists to try and get people to read it for free. That said before they went free they were being murdered by unpaid bloggers who were doing a better job covering the music scene in the UK anyway.

I mean, print mags like that had it coming once the internet became a thing.

I remember getting onto the old MTV2 forums waaaaaaay back in the day, and even the music channel, that ran 24 hours a day, couldn't compete with the sheer volume and passion of the new music being shared on it's own forums.

Of course, mainstream media journalism still has a place, but 'arbiters of taste' are (rightly) dying out.

I get the feeling NME was probably amazing but it a era prior to the one I grew up in. But from what I read it was pretty horrible.

I seem to remember it being relatively decent in the early nineties (I used to alternate between that and Melody Maker depending on the content).

I picked up a couple of issues in the late 90's and thought it was dire, the same with the free version. It was pretty much all adverts.

Local bloggers and web mags and pretty much flyers seem do a fair job of promoting talent. who needs the rest when every band has a social media profile and website.

The best thing that came out of NME was Muse's CD cover of "Man of Mystery".
