PostRe: No Man's Sky - VR support coming via 'Beyond' update - Game will be fully playable in VR, on PC and PS

Sean Murray, talking to PlayStation Blog, wrote:No Man’s Sky Beyond aims to bring a huge range of features together into a cohesive whole, with expanded online, virtual reality and hundreds of changes big and small. We want Beyond to be the best time for new players to pick up a copy, for lapsed players to rejoin, and for the players with a thousand hours save to see the game with fresh eyes.

No Man’s Sky has always been a science-fiction fantasy come true. That feeling of isolation and loneliness as you explore an alien world for the first time continues to be a unique experience.

However, one of the coolest things you will notice from the trailer is what we call the Nexus, a shared social space that brings people together to share social space where they can play with friends or join with random strangers like never before.

Suddenly your ship that you spent 50 hours earning can now be seen by others in the Nexus. Your rare spacesuit and unique helmet can be shown off to other players. Friends and strangers can visit that massive base you’ve been working on.

Progression in No Man’s Sky is so much more meaningful when you can share it with other explorers and so much more engaging when any creations or missions become shareable. Once you meet fellow travellers who knows what space-faring adventures you will go on together.

This is an incredibly important update for us, but it’s also just another step in a longer journey, and we’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

I can't think of too many games that have been improved over such a period of time; for free. Following the controversy at launch three years ago, Hello Games has worked solidly on developing this game into something that I think many will feel is beyond original expectations. For fans who have been there since the beginning, this has been quite a journey.

I think I'll finally take the plunge on this.

I love the idea of it, and the VR sounds great - but I 'll probably play it 'flat' generally as I can see it being a bit sicky.

Not quite sure about how multi player works - is there combat? I can see me getting constantly destroyed by people that have been playing since the start, with their upgraded everythings….

I'm hoping to find a beautiful planet and just chill.

The above post is followed by a winky, smiley or facepalm as appropriate.

My hope is that random encounters with other players are pretty rare, unless you actively set out to play with friends.

Certainly combat is not going to be the main focus of this.

Yeah, although there will be new multiplayer aspects - and even a hub area that you can visit and meet lots of players - the game universe is so massive that you're unlikely to bump into other players too often.

I hope that there will be an option to avoid player versus player combat as that just wouldn't be to my taste; although I'd be up for wandering and exploring with other players :-) .

Still WAY too expensive, I’ll wait till it comes to Gamepass. Glad they keep improving it, as an aside, lots of games patch, add things and improve for free.

It's currently £15.99 on the PS Store, £19.99 on PC (CDkeys) and £27.99 on the Xbox Store.

Does the PSVR hardware get discounted much?

There's quite often really good bundles for around £199 that include everything you need to get started and 5/6 games. But that's usually when there are sales and stuff on.

The Mega Pack can currently be had for around £250 at Amazon just now.

Bear in mind that it doesn't include the Move controllers, which aren't technically needed, but they add so much to the experience it's near essential. They can be expensive though.

I would wait for a good deal on the system myself.

Finally, I would also add that Sony have confirmed that PSVR will be compatible with PS5, so you can carry it forward to the next system as well.

Forgot to reply to this :fp:

Thanks for the VR info CD! I'm definitely going to keep an eye on it as a £199 deal for all that would be excellent. Do the Move controllers work with all games or are they really only going to enhance certain experiences? Might get them later if so.

I'd be interested as to why you think circa twenty quid is too expensive... when you haven't played the game.

Hang on - no, I'm not interested.

Oooh, feel the Jawa burn

I need to give this a go again on PS4. It's still installed but cant remember the last time I played it. I have PSVR too so will try that out.

A few things, first all it’ll be about €30, so not ‘circa’ £20, it’s double what it is on PS4 (which undermines your point about value) unless you think 4K is worth double? I don’t.

There's only a handful of games that won't work without them. Some games don't use them at all. Most games have some support for them though.

I can't recommend them enough though. When it comes to VR, immersion and sense of presence is paramount and the Move controllers are (In my opinion) an essential part of that. Batman Arkham VR (While short and perhaps too expensive) is enhanced by an astonishing degree when you can see you hands, shoot the grapnel gun and throw the baterangs yourself. SuperHot VR allows you to act out some of the coolest action movie fantasies. Beat Sabre is simply not possible without them.

So personally, getting PSVR and not getting the moves is like getting only 1/10th of the experience. It's that good.

The crux of your post seems to be annoyance that the Xbox version costs more. I agree with you; I'd recommend that people interested in playing this game do not choose Xbox.

So, as the Xbox is the only console I own... too expensive again, as I said.

Yeah, £28 for a video game is way too expensive. They're not worth it, regardless of whether you have played the game in question or even have an interest in it.

I have an interest in it, always have, pretty sure I posted I was excited when it was announced for Xbox. I haven’t paid full price for a game since last November (Red Dead 2) because of Gamepass. It’s not that bizarre tbh.

Even my games played below has 3 Gamepass games on there. :)

Gamepass sounds neat. I presume you'll be posting in every non-Gamepass game thread, indicating that said game is "WAY too expensive" because of this?

If it annoys you this much I might. ;)

I got Fallout 76 for €15 on cdkeys, whatever’s cheapest is normal course of action for game you want right?

I think you’ll find I don’t post a lot in threads of games that I don’t own, I’m interested in this, seen there was an update, checked Xbox Store and it was too expensive (imo). I have no idea why this bothers you so much.

Anyway... I'll probably be sticking to 2D mode; I'll try out VR but my setup doesn't have the space to allow for much movement.
